Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Juan Jose Avocado (seedless)
« on: June 30, 2015, 07:02:33 AM »
I have heard that the fruit can vary on some seedless avocado varieties with some fruit being skinnier and seedless and other fruits on the same tree being wider with a various side seed. Have you heard that before? Are all the fruits from your tree that same similar shape as you have pictured?
Did yours come from Fairchild farm? The shape of the fruit in your pictures does not look like the shape that was described to us or used by Richard and Noris. Thanks for posting your experience!

Our sweetheart lychee produced just as much as our Brewster this year and looks better overall, but our trees are still small (in the ground 2 years or so).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee Mauritius...when is it ready?
« on: June 17, 2015, 07:02:43 AM »
We put up CDs around our lychee trees this year. We have two nests of crows close by and didn't notice any problems with birds taking fruit. The only issue we had was with fruit near the ground (possums or raccoons).

Great video! I will give this a try next time. I have a couple of mats that are so overgrow that I wasn't able to remove some pups with my long spade.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question about Rajapuri banana tree.
« on: June 12, 2015, 07:16:46 PM »
I have plenty of Raja Puri pups that I need to dig. I sent you a PM so you can come pick some up. I just went and took a close up of the small pups of our raja puri and they do have some small darker areas. Mine are in need of nutrition, so the light green new leaves are lighter than they should be. I am in the process of trying to remove all the RajaPuri bananas from this part of our yard.

Pictures below.

Mine has solid green leaves. I have been growing rajapuri banana plants for over 15 years. Never had a sport or anything come up with red on the leaves. Where did you purchase it? Was it a tissue culture? Sometimes tissue culture plants look different when small, and sometimes that is something a seller will tell a customer when they question their purchase. The World of Bananas in Hawaii says that red spots on pups can be a sign of light or nutrition issues.

I have Incarnata (Maypop) and Caerulea
i have seeds for Edulis purple and yellow.

the Maypop tastes really good, to me anyway

the only Edulis i have growing is possum purple
(is everyone growing that ?) LOL
i cant get it to flower, its 2 yrs old, several vines about 8ft from the main plant.
any ideas ?

My edulis flowers and fruits first year. Not sure what is wrong with it. Maybe hit it with some low nitrogen fertilizer.

@ Geo - The tree at Fruit n Spice was labeled M. Ordata i thought that it was mislabeled because the fruit had some Julie like  (to me nuances in it's flavor)  if i recall it was a smallish fruit with some fiber but the taste was delicious Julie like to me ... maybe it was mislabeled????
The tree was a large tree so i do not think it was (i saw a Julie at fruit scapes and tasted a fruit and the tree was small)
!

I saw that tree loaded when we were there last week. Nothing ripe on the ground though that day.

Great report! We really enjoy Fruitscapes - Steve and Jessie are great. Please describe M. odorata. My grafted one is taking and I would love a description. Noris L. really likes it, but Oscar isn't a fan. Would love a 3rd opinion with description.

Yes I can provide some, It is the possum one because I bought it from a nursery.

I heard once that when you do cuttings the  plant takes the age of the original, I wonder if this conflicts with production?
I already have that one, but thank you. I have taken cuttings and the new plants are just starting to fruit and doing great - nothing like the plant we took it from that was nearing its end.

Recent acquisition mail order (1 month). The colors look amazing for a banana tree especially the iridescent pink along the small pseudostem.

Blue Java Banana

Keep us posted as to how it does and photos when it fruits. I have blue Java (ice cream) and namwah growing at our place if it doesn't end up being what you hoped. Hopefully it is. Namwah is great too. I spent $100 on bananas from a mail order place in CA a year ago and I received 3 totally different varieties than what I ordered. Really disappointing. Pictures of our two plants are below, but tissue cultured bananas can look different than pups when young (and sometimes when they mature).

I ordered something from FHN and it was not the variety I ordered. I received no response after contacting them and their website would not allow me to post an honest review of the plant.

Blue Java Ice Cream (proven by fruit)

Namwah (purchased 3 years ago as ice cream from tissue culture, but was namwah - a very good tasting banana that we are happy to have)

I met the guy who owns FL Hill a few years back...i got to see his place...

he is a super nice person!!!

never ordered from him, but I belive he has tons of satisfied customers (i think his ebay account reflects that)...

lol i read the link from bananas.org...i guess the owner of Going bananas doesn't think too highly of FHL...(not really a surprise being that they are in competition with each other)

I do not think the person commenting as "Going Bananas" from CA  is The owner from Going Banana in Homestead. Doesn't sound at all like Don or Katie. They are top notch people who have been in the business a long time.

Do you have pictures of the purple one you have (outside and inside)?

How much were the mangosteens a pound?  I'm so shy about buying them.  You pay crazy cash for them and half of them are moldy fuzz when you crack them open, which makes them twice as expensive, and yet I still buy them. I've learned to not sit on them after purchase, open immediately, devour if good.

Wonderful report by the way.

One fruit was $2. I only purchased one - they were sold by the pound, but I do not remember the price. It wasn't moldy. It was good, but left me wondering what all the fuss was about. Perhaps because they do travel and are irradiated. I wish I had purchased 2 so I could have seen if they tasted the same or not. Next time.

Looking to buy or trade good tasting/nicely colored passion fruit cuttings other than possum purple. For trade, I have a few passion fruit, bananas, Inga sp seedlings or will pay. Would like to see photos of the fruit. I am not interested in Fredricks Purple from Florida Hill.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passionfruit vine training
« on: June 09, 2015, 12:09:11 PM »
You will
I've heard about the three year rule on production.  What if the vine is slow to start and doesn't produce for three year?  Will it/can it still give three years of production?  It seems like some plants are really about years of production and not necessarily age.

You will know when it is time to pull it out (if that happens to your particular plant). I have another species of passion vine in the ground that flowers year round and is still going strong. I definitely wouldn't pull out anything that was thriving. Our P. edulis flavicarpa seems much slower in production and doesn't have any crown rot issues - it has only been in the ground 18 months or so, but I don't see any signs of rot or other issues with the plant (other than slower production). I am wondering if I graft our prolific fruiter onto flavicarpa or another passion vine if it will continue with great production. Would be interested in hearing the experience of others.

Around homestead there's always nurseries with giant granadilla at least. I haven't had too much luck yet with it. I think Miami's heat and humidity are not it's favorite. I was growing water lemon for a while but a roommate killed it by not watering all winter while I traveled.

Here when I let it go it climbed bananas, the neighbor's house, and became truly massive. The neighbors didn't like it growing a few feet into their yard and would clip it poorly, then parts of it would die, etc. My only other idea is to build an arch, but I think they can be trained.

Vernmented is growing (and training) passion vine. He might have some advice on containment.

Thats amazing is that the purple, and what part of south west Florida?

My dream is to start a passion fruit farm one day.

I also let the passion fruit grow at will, its nearly at the 3 year mark and the base of the vine is looking pretty rough.

But I have made a root cutting of the current one and it started fruiting immediately.
That picture is an unnamed red/purple fruited Passiflora edulis. It is really prolific, but the crown rots so bad that production falls at 3 years (to the point that it needs to be ripped out and replanted). We have talked about trying to graft it onto one of our other varieties. We are in the Sarasota area. We started with one fruiting Passion flower vine and now have many planted. I would love to find cuttings of some different varieties.

Great pictures and info!

F&S also has Mangifera odorata. It wasn't ripe last week though. We heard this described as having a lychee like quality. I have two recently grafted trees. Would be interested in hearing how the fruit tastes from someone else.

Don't find Kuini  (M. odorata ) to have absolutely any resemblence in taste to lychee. Tastes like resinous turpentine mango to me.

Thanks for the info. Doesn't sound like something I would enjoy. Are there any Mangiferas, other than indica that you enjoy?

Thanks for sharing your wonderful tropical fruit vacation. I am now on the hunt for a source of homestead honey Lychee air layers.

Simon
I do not think the grower is planning on releasing the plant - he only sells the fruit.

Geosulcata, just had a chance to read your whole post. Sounds like you had a really great and memorable time. Great reporting and photos! What is the colorful blue lizard with gold colored head? Happy anniversay!
Thanks!
I think the lizards are called red headed agamas (not native). They were everywhere. We attempted to catch one, but they were very quick. We also saw many baby iguanas and various non-indigenous anoles.

I am interested in hearing how others grow passion fruit. We let ours grow at will on chain link fencing. We remove plants as production slows (around year 3) or if crown rot develops.
