JF, Can't wait to see the final results.  As you know I have the same plans for my three in one hole cherimoya.  I also think its funny how you're not into labels;  I would never be to remember half my grafts without them.

JF, The Parafilm is breaking on one of them.  I't's to early to tell if its pushing or if the Parafilm is degrading on its own....

Ethan, I'm still waiting for mine from Montoso gardens.  It says on there website it will fruit in the shade.  Would you say that's accurate because I have lots of room on the north side of my house and would like to put it there if possible.  Thanks, Greg

Cuban007.  Nice job. Can you post some picks and did you get your Mamey scions yet?  Greg

Hope they find a cure.  The tree they found in California was in Hacienda Heights which is only a couple of miles away from me..

Could someone recommend a good soil mix for a bare rooted plant?  Thanks, Greg

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.  I wish I would have gone higher on the graft.  My only hope is the large size and age of the rootstock.  Hopefully it has enough stored energy to make it...  I still have a third (much smaller scion and rootstock) to graft as back-up....

I received my Mamey scions today from Frankies Nursery.  Here are pictures of my attempt at grafting my 4ft. seedling.  Lynn from Frankies suggested I try a cleft and side veneer graft on the same rootstock.  She said its more difficult for larger diameter rootstock to take and doing both might increase my chances.  I've got a third scion which I plan on using on JF's smaller seedling.  I accidentally broke off the only two leaves while trying to put it in my overcrowded portable greenhouse.  I'm hoping that won't be an issue.

Here is a picture of grafts I made on my Geffner.  The Nuathong and Lisa were grafted last month and took some time to push.  The African Pride was grafted a couple of weeks ago and took off immediately.  I had it in my portable greenhouse this whole time and just stuck it on the north side of my house yesterday.  You guys have me worried!!  I thought I had successful grafts until I read some of these posts.  Do you think there's a chance my grafts will die in a couple of months?  Greg

Here is a picture of my La Verne Mamey Sapote seedling.  I didn't know there was named cultivars when I bought it.  Oh well!!!!  I really don't want to wait a 7+ years to see fruit so hopefully I can get some budwood to graft over this before it gets any bigger.

Behlgarden, I used parafilm, and rubberbands.  The first graft is a cleft graft and the second graft is vaneer.

I think my portable greenhouse has really helped a lot with the grafts.  I have a little electric heater with a thermostat.  I don't let the temp. drop below 65 and I also keep the pea gravel wet which keeps the humidity up.

Joe, here is a picture of the sugar apple and African Pride grafts I made with the wood you gave me.  Thanks again..  Greg

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are grafting knives necessary?
« on: February 02, 2012, 09:46:29 AM »
Ethan,

I never thought of using a plane but thats a really good idea.  I just bought a micro plane at harbor freight and plan on using it for veneer cuts.  The problem I sometimes have with my grafting knife is sometimes I go to deep on the rootstock or scion and i don't get both cambium layers to match up..
