I am planning on grafting some mabolo just for fun ( I have 2 producing females and 1 male ) .

Will a single female produce and if yes will the fruit be seedless ? I seem to have read this somewhere but not 100% sure....

« on: January 12, 2018, 07:56:23 PM »
Even though it is not really the right time of the year I have been planting lots of seedlings in the ground at the orchard ( pressure from my wife and I must admit I was exaggerating ) Couldn't read the name on this one anymore , may be a weed ...someone knows ....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Strange ( bad ) fruiting year so far for 2017 .
« on: September 26, 2017, 08:15:53 PM »
Don't know about you folks but so far 2017 was not really a good fruiting year , actually very poor . Some trees didn't even flower at all . Others on the other side had unusual heavy crops . Did any of you experience the same ?

Since I deal with lots and lots of these seeds , cleaning them and let dry for shipping , some get stolen by wildlife and end up germinated in unusual places . Most of the time I cut these down or pull them out . Some that are not really in the way of planting space for other trees I leave them for experimenting with later on . Well ...one of these produced good size fruits now , not normal ...season usually ends latest in July . Never noticed them since this tree ( only 2 meters tall ) grows in an not much visited area outside of the orchard .

Only 30 some seeds available @ 2 USD each plus shipping . Due to problems with US customs ( people with no permit ) I'd rather sell the whole badge to ONE person outside of the USA . Sorry .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bilimbi ....not acid ..
« on: July 08, 2017, 08:43:17 PM »
Finally got to taste my own bilimbi , fruits were only about 10 cm long ( no idea how large they get in their natural habitat ) Found a few fruits on the ground and was prepared to have my tong burned ( was also eager to use the fruit to clean the blade of an antique Malaysian Kris ( dagger / sword ) I read somewhere that's what they use the fruit for besides in cooking ) Surprise ....I am not gonna say it was sweet like a mango but for sure a lot sweeter than some of my Eugenia pyriformis . First I just licked the fruit ( cut in half ) almost no acidity so I took a good bite 1/2 of the fruit . I didn't have to run to the pharmacy for anti acid pills at all , was actually a pleasant flavor . Now the question is : did I end up with one of those kinda rare sweet ones ( thanks to my Indian friend who send me the seeds )

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kaffir lime problems .
« on: June 26, 2017, 07:16:21 PM »
I am not a Citrus guy , actually I removed most of them for fear of HLB . Now my beautiful Kaffir 3 meters tall lost all his leaves , the few Citrus I kept are doing great , all growing in the same area . The Kaffir has never flowered or fruited , other Citrus much younger have fruit now . Some thing in the soil maybe ? Or since we had an extremely long dry season did I water too much ?

In 1996 I brought back from Brazil ONE single seed , now ( I measured it , 3 meters wide and 1.70 meters tall ) Since last year I decided to plant some seeds for back up ( one never knows , I had trees doing wonderful and then suddenly die ) All seedlings did great up to 5 cm tall and then gave up ... I did send seeds to quite a few of you and would like to hear what you did to keep these going , type of soil , water etc...

This year I am gonna prepare several types of soil mixtures from extremely poor to very fertile , some with coffee grounds ( would Starbucks be a good brand ...LOL...) , or am I getting too old and loosing my green thumb ...

This does not grow wild in my area but further south ( Oaxaca , Yucatan etc..) Can anybody tell me , how do I know when the fruit is ripe , some say it doesn't turn yellow and must fall by itself from the tree , a friend send me a few ( Fedex ) and said they would be ripe on arrival . Look at the pic ...to me they are not ripe yet ...probably the seeds will be ready but I am afraid to screw up and also get a bad impression about the fruit itself ( if still unripe ) What do you folks think ?
