I've been waiting for Luc's Garcinia seeds for better than two months, so I feel your pain! I chose the Miami station thinking that my presence in Miami would help expedite matters, but this seems far from the case! Potentially losing the cost of this quantity of seeds is a tough pill to swallow, especially considering the fact that sent without the proper channels they could have been here a month ago!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kaffir lime problems .
« on: June 26, 2017, 07:16:21 PM »
I am not a Citrus guy , actually I removed most of them for fear of HLB . Now my beautiful Kaffir 3 meters tall lost all his leaves , the few Citrus I kept are doing great , all growing in the same area . The Kaffir has never flowered or fruited , other Citrus much younger have fruit now . Some thing in the soil maybe ? Or since we had an extremely long dry season did I water too much ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Why young Chempadak plants die
« on: June 19, 2017, 01:47:48 PM »
I bought 5 chempedak seeds, all of them sprouted and after putting out 4 leaves all of them died!! Does any one know for what reason??

That's the million dollar question . Over the years I brought back hundreds of seeds . Only one made it .

He's just slowing down a little .....I am gonna have to do that also , you cannot allow your hobby to take over your life and family .

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to those photos luc. I've sent the seller a message, mentioning that I've asked some jaboticaba growers, and she responded by asking me to send her picture's of you guys' seeds. If anyone other than luc has some photos, I would be very thankful if you could post them here. Thanks again for your help.

Here's the picture Nexxogen, needs just a little bit more cleaning ...then packed in slightly moist vermiculite and on his way....should arrive germinating ....

110
So I ordered from another vendor and I got this. Do I have the real jaboticaba seeds this time?

Hold on a second , I am just preparing some Jaboticaba seeds ( Plinia phitrantha ) for shipping , picked yesterday , to send to a friend . The picture you posted do not look like Jaboticaba . In my opinion jaboticaba seed should never be dried . For example I got over 300 seeds from Brazil ( 3 varieties ) only a 5% were viable , bad packing and long travel time .

Picture of 2 days old cleaned seeds in my next post .

111
These seeds are hard as a rock , did anybody ever tried to crack them ( hammer needed ) to let water in and speed up germination ?

112
Forgot to say I didn't notice any cinnamon in them , not crazy about cinnamon anyway...

113
Well ..my friend who send me the fruits told me : " Don't listen to all these guys about fruit splitting etc.....eat them NOW " I did and was very pleasantly surprised , I did put them in the fridge first , I like my fruits cold , I am as you all know not very good at describing flavors but the closest I can come is : A sorbet with a not very pronounced , delicate and delicious mango flavor . Bottom line , I'll plant the seeds .

114
I bought a handful.  Over half germinated.  Maybe 2-3 left but not doing to well.  Maybe need more sunlight.  In a well shaded area.  Then again luc, I killed lots of Mexican mangosteen.  My green thumb is browning.  :(

Not 100 % sure about needing more sunlight at the seedling stage , I think that's how I killed mine . But to kill Mex. mangosteen you must really try hard , here they are popping up a little everywhere just laying on the ground , I think I pulled about 10 today , they do have an extremely long taproot ....

115
Now I remember , the plant where I collected the fruit from was growing in shade , not even filtered light ..

116
In 1996 I brought back from Brazil ONE single seed , now ( I measured it , 3 meters wide and 1.70 meters tall ) Since last year I decided to plant some seeds for back up ( one never knows , I had trees doing wonderful and then suddenly die ) All seedlings did great up to 5 cm tall and then gave up ... I did send seeds to quite a few of you and would like to hear what you did to keep these going , type of soil , water etc...

This year I am gonna prepare several types of soil mixtures from extremely poor to very fertile , some with coffee grounds ( would Starbucks be a good brand ...LOL...) , or am I getting too old and loosing my green thumb ...

117
This does not grow wild in my area but further south ( Oaxaca , Yucatan etc..) Can anybody tell me , how do I know when the fruit is ripe , some say it doesn't turn yellow and must fall by itself from the tree , a friend send me a few ( Fedex ) and said they would be ripe on arrival . Look at the pic ...to me they are not ripe yet ...probably the seeds will be ready but I am afraid to screw up and also get a bad impression about the fruit itself ( if still unripe ) What do you folks think ?

I noticed fruiting season is also longer than the regular Rio grande ,  @ acoff87, I have been watering mine every 2 days more or less , the fruits get bigger but less sweet compared to an other Rio that I have right next to it .
I don't know if y'all will agree but my experience specially with Eugenia and Citrus is that once they are almost ready withholding water will make them sweeter .

Girdling with wire is a pretty old method. Taking to recalcitrant trees with a cricket or baseball ball, tyre iron or pipe is also old and popular. Withholding water until a specific level of stress is experienced is also widely practiced. If a tree or branch 'thinks' it will or is dying it has only one shot at immortality.
I don't recommend anyone hitting their trees, driving nails, or running over their tree with their tractor. Girdling with a wire, making a cut, or witholding water can be very precisely controlled methods. These other brute methods cannot be precisely controlled and are very likely to cause permanent damage or even kill the tree. Ihe idea is to stress the tree just the right amount, not to torture or mame the tree.

Hahaha , Oscar , remember running over his longan trees with his tractor wasn't that what an Israeli guy ( yahoo rarefruit group ) did , forgot his name , but it worked ....

Great job!!!

Btw, I thought we had decided on Garcinia Vleerackerii.

Ethan , the guys from the university said that IF it is a different sp it would get my name , they still wanna study and compare with the other Garcinia ( intermedia - Rheedia ) before making a decision .
Anyway Omar said he would write a paper about it .
