Citrus General Discussion / What is it- greening?
« on: February 28, 2017, 08:43:10 AM »
I like  a lot grapefruits from USA, they are much tastier than those coming from Israel or Italy, but today have seen very strange  fruits with a lot of uneven green coloration. Is it possible, that they are affected by greening?

Yes, Kinkoji (Bloomsweet) is a hybrid of pomelo with tangor Kunenbo-A ( sweet orange - Kishu mandarin cross).

Probably geothermal heating is a more economical solution

In general, why would anyone support Monsanto??????
Here the generic glyphosate is much cheaper than RoundUp.

May be air-layering will be more efficient.

If you try this post back and tell us how you came out.  I will also try it.
Strangely enough they are not showing the resulting roots  after this "rooting", only partially rotten potato.

Yes, it is almost seedless, one seed out of 20 fruits.

At least I bought it from Bernhardt Voss under this name.
He propagated Bloomsweet seedling budwood grafted on poncirus and it seems that the first flowering happened in  my garden. Other than shape it fits the description of Kinkoji/Bloomsweet.

Delvy83,
Before it wasplanted  for 5 years in my garden near Paris; i survived one winter with minus 12C (10.4-F) and two winters with minimum of minus 9C (15.8-F). Each time lost some wood but gave vigorous growth in the following summer.
Now it is in   9b zone garden, where of course it has no problems with hardiness

The gas is ethylene, not ethane. It is a naturally produced plant hormone for fruit ripening.

Pancrazio,
Last year I harvested some fruits at the beginning of February, they were holding nicely on the tree, but lost almost completely their acidity. Now, in the middle of December the balance of sweet/acid is optimal.
I am much puzzled why this variety is not of commercial success.

My Bloomsweet is doing beautifully till now. On PTFD, north exposure, it is dealing beautifully with cold snaps we had till now (Temps ranging from 30 to 24F). It is the biggest
My main concern is, if it remains so vigorous probably the place where i though it could be planted will be too small. I hoped to have a plant no taller than 2,5/3mt (8-10ft max).

Pancrazio,
The mother plant of your graft is now almost 4 meters high, but columnar in shape.

Last week harvest:

Very good taste, completely ripe, sweet with some pleasant acidity, practically no bitterness, for me it is better than most of conventional grapefruits

Zafra,
Please read carefully wiki article on Cam sanh:
Classification
This tree is referred to as the "King Tangor" or "King Mandarin" in most horticultural literature.[3] Scion for grafting is available through the University of California Citrus Clonal Protection Program.[4]

This Vietnamese  variety is known as King tangor in the West

According to the recent molecular DNA analysis  Indian limes have a very different origin than Citrus aurantifolia.

Mandarins is very heterogeneous group, in my experience Owari and Early StAnne seedlings do not have thorns at all.

Shah8,
I agree with you, people are probably expecting too much from existing poncirus hybrids.
Still, it is amazing that that after more than 100 years of selection, only few hardy and edible varieties emerged.
Nevertheless,  the existence of plants like Thomasville and Dunstan demonstrates that it is possible to shift citrus belt to the North.
I guess  not enough efforts were made in crossing direct poncirus hybrids among them; their crossing to classical citruses diluted the hardiness , but rarely  brought  good quality of the fruits.

Millet,
Are you growing it?
My plant in the open ground survived -16C, but no fruits yet. *I have read  contradicting opinions on its gustative qualities, probably there are different clones of this citrumelo.

Very strange  warning at the end of this article:

Satsuma branches have thorns, so be cautious when handling them

I have never seen thorns in satsumas.
