I was supposed to attend the show, but changed plans at the last minute to attend another show. Sunkist always does interesting things! At the PMA in CA, they hired a professional chef who was giving away ceviche in flat bread that was incredibly good!!

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Fertilizing Ratios
« on: June 04, 2015, 02:42:00 PM »
Hello,

I have a Rain Bird Electronic Garden Hose Watering Timer. I can set the days of the week, the duration and can water up to two times daily. For now, I have it set to water 10 minutes, twice a day and 2 times per week. I am going to start to water 3 times per week, however, since temps have really warmed up here.

I will reduce the rate to 50-100 ppm right away! I thought that it was way too much fertilizer when i was weighing 27 oz; besides, root caps had a blue tint to them and that never happened before! Fortunately, I've only watered them once with that rate so I'm sure they'll enjoy the extra food that one time.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR RESPONSE!!!!

Robert

Citrus General Discussion / Fertilizing Ratios
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:39:16 PM »
Hello,

I just purchased an injector so i can fertilize my citrus with each watering. I am a little concerned because this is my first injector and i want to make sure i don't burn my trees! The injector I purchased is the EZ-FLO 2 gallon drip system. I am using Jack's Professional 25-5-15 high performance.

I am running the injector at 100:1

Mixing ratios for fertilizer:
1:100 (1%) setting    E.C.
100 ppm    =    5.4 oz.    0.57
200 ppm    =    10.8 oz.    1.14
300 ppm    =    16.2 oz.    1.71

Since this is a 2 gallon receptacle, I am mixing in 27 oz of fertilizer to make it 250 ppm. That seems like a ton of fertilizer!!!

I am building up the courage to finally turn it on! Any feedback would give me peace of mind and would be greatly appreciated!

Same thing happened to me!!! Temps just climbed  to the high 90's and i started losing all the fruit that had just formed! On all varieties except my Meyer Lemon.. Even though they get complete shade after 1 pm.

Oh well - good thing is that they flush and then start blooming again.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Gold Nugget Mandarin
« on: April 23, 2015, 06:15:42 PM »
I just ate the first fruits from my 3 year old golden nugget. The fruit was on the tree FOREVER!! My collection of citrus is all very young and i'm barely starting to get fruit; i must say i'm impressed at how much better it tastes than store bought fruit! My golden nugget was delicious, easy to peel and bursting with juice!! Proud of my little guy and can only imagine how good the fruit will be when tree matures.

I also ate my first Ruby red grapefruit and even though i don't really like grapefruit, it was incredible and not too acidic!

Can't wait for my cara cara and Sanguinelle blood orange that are almost ready...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Feijoa Pineapple Guava
« on: April 11, 2015, 12:32:07 PM »
Hello,

I'm curious if anyone had any thoughts as to what is wrong with my Feijoa Pineapple Guava? No new growth, color very light and many leaves are starting to look like they are about to fall off. The temps here are barely warming up, so i am not panicking, but something def looks wrong. My feijoa's in pots are a deep green and full of growth already. The interesting thing is that I had a Washington Naval orange tree planted where Feijoa is now that looked unhealthy, just like the Feijoa! I took it out, put it in a pot and now it's doing great.

I fertilized yesterday and the fertilizer has micro-nutrients; I'm hoping that helps!!!

Went back and found a post by Brian where he informed me the Meiwa is the shorter leaf and th nagami is the longer one.

Seems the nagami is thriving! That means my wife wins yet again  8)

Thank you all for your replies! It is unfortunate the graft will dye! I was looking forward to a 2n1 because my wife loves Nagami, but it is way too sour for me!

I wonder which of the two is dying? The one with the thinner, longer leaves is thriving!!!

I have a meiwa/nagami 2 in 1 tree and one of the two has taken off, while the other is slowing dying! Any thoughts as to why this may be happening and what I can do to save it?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Hope you are feeling much better Bob!!!

Fortunately, medical advances for heart issues have improved drastically!!! My grandpa, uncle and cousin are all cardiologist and my father is a professional patient: he has had a quadruple bypass surgery and 2 stints. He also gets occasional gout but completely controls it with a good diet. He actually feels way better than before the surgery, is very active and doing great!! No doubt you will make a complete recovery!

You are in my prayers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf Carica Papaya
« on: August 06, 2014, 12:33:56 PM »
Good morning,

Was wondering if anyone could let me know if I would be able to grow a papaya in the Southern AZ heat? I live in Tubac, AZ - zone 8 and want to grow one in a container. I have a shade house in the summer and convert it to a greenhouse in the winter.

Thanks,

Wow Millet - still keeping busy ey? I remember reading you were reducing the amount of trees because it was too much work.

I'm actually surprised you don't have a xie-shan in the ground being that it is your favorite variety.

congrats on your GH!!

Mark,

How long will one of these storage tanks last you in the TX sun? I live in AZ, in a similar zone as you and was wondering if the AZ heat would dehydrate the storage tank rapidly.

Thanks,

Robert

Citrus General Discussion / Allspice
« on: July 02, 2014, 06:37:25 PM »
Anyone familiar with a variety called Allspice? Supposedly the fruit has a spicy aftertaste. I was intrigued by it and I purchased a very small tree from RSI Growers. It flushed all winter in my greenhouse and I can't wait until I get fruit.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: A Mandarin Worth Considering
« on: July 02, 2014, 03:12:35 PM »
I have one with about 8 little mandarins that I look forward to tasting. I actually made a huge rookie mistake with this tree! When transplanting it, I bare-rooted the tree and the weight from the tree squished the roots in the new air root container. It was in awful shape for over a year and i thought the roots were damaged permanently; fortunately, this winter in the greenhouse is started flushing like crazy and it gave me the 1st fruit.

71
when to switch to bigger air root containers is something i struggle with. I can't seem to understand the toothpaste analogy.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Miewa Kumquat
« on: June 25, 2014, 10:47:28 AM »
I purchased that tree from Reid at RSI Growers in Phoenix. He does a real good job and is a wealth of information. He actually told me the tree was barely grafted and too young to sell, but I told him i prefer it that way to transfer it to an air root container with minimal, if any root damage when I bare-rooted. Even though the tree is very young, it flushed all winter in my greenhouse and is flushing still. One of the two is already blooming; unfortunately, i can't tell which side of the tree is the meiwa and which is the nagami.

Best

I was surprised to see Kumquats being sold in clam shells at my local grocery store. The taste is way to tart for me, but my wife absolutely loves them. My first and only casualty with citrus in 3 years has been a Nagami that I lost to WLD. I currently have a young meiwa/nagami 2-n-1 tree.

These kumquats I purchased are definitely not Nagami because they were much sweeter.

Good luck! Love how you are documenting this!!

Millet,

So you've officially jumped ship from the CHC correct? I have also started using cedar mulch due to price and availability, but most of my trees still have the CHC based on your original recommendations and are all doing well!
