I get it but in davao most people do not grow seedlings. I’ve been there 4 times. Grafted durian cost about $2 per plant and really easy to find, many nurseries. In Malaysia too most people grow grafted plants. In Indonesia , yes , mostly people growing seedlings, but the quality is generally not as good.

“Consider there are thousands of trees which are just seedlings”

This simply isn’t true. Arancillo and Puyat were seeedlings at one point but when selected and grafted they are all clones of each other. Variability only comes in with how/where they are grown.

That pineapple is not ripe.  So what’s it look like when it’s ripe ?

Smell of arancillo should be not be “very light”. Arancillo is the only really bitter variety in Davao, and the smell should carry through. Puyat most common grown variety in Davao, I don’t care for it but the locals don’t mind it as long as it’s sweet and creamy, their standards for durian are not as high as Malaysians. Why you eat Marang with plastic gloves when you can peel the skin and eat it like a popsicle, no need to use plastic...

« on: October 24, 2017, 11:11:02 AM »
Planning on going to Bali this January in search of the Wani "white mango"... have read before January is the season. Can anyone confirm or have recommendations where to go exactly to try this fruit? Also curious if it can be found in Medan or only Bali?

I'm planning a trip to Borneo this December. Just curious who you are following on IG who has been posting pictures of durian in season now?

I have read some saying yes and some say no, one tree can fruit on its own. There's a few trees on the farm and some produce less than others but they all produce.

43
Durian seed from choice seedling trees on big island Hawaii  2.50 each

Limited lisa atemoya seed available. $2 each

Rollinia - 1.50

Ive read that the crown can be quartered and still grow. I wonder if it's better to root the crown first and then quarter or if it's ok quartering first and then rooting? I would think it's easier to quarter and then root but maybe more successful if rooted and then quartered due to immediate ability to uptake water with the roots?

Simon

it also can be done with the slips and suckers. you could root before but then you will just disturb/cut the roots doing it later. if you make the cut first then plant it, you are done. its just another step not needed, i think

The durian quality looks outstanding. Is it from an old tree?

i was thinking the same thing, nice variety of fruit they have there in CR., a guy on Facebook was posting pictures of marang and cempedak recently too

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Jade Pineapple

Here is possibly the worlds smallest, non tissue cultured, White Jade. I was removing some small White Jade suckers a while back and accidentally knocked off a tiny 1.5 Inch sucker. It didn't really have any roots but I stuck it in a pot anyways. Well, it appears the original sucker is dead or at least almost dead but now I just noticed that the plant produced a tiny baby which must have formed from the roots which eventually developed.

Simon

another way you can do this form of 'micropropagation' and increase your plant numbers is by sectioning the slips into quarters or 3rds. then planting the inner core in the soil, keep moist and new growth should occur in a matter of weeks, which you can later twist off and replant these baby plants.  theoretically its easy to get 3-6 plants from 1 slip. we used this technique at frankies using a paper cutter, you don't have to use one but it was good for making straight and precise cuts.

i don't know anyone that has it on the big island or oahu, most of my fruit growing friends havent even heard of it, as they don't post on here or aren't paying attention to whats happening in FL
