A better description of the taste might be: candy sweet Jackfruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Variegated pineapple has fruited
« on: August 02, 2017, 09:47:40 PM »
Ok so I couldn't resist cutting it open tonight.

Texture similar to white fleshed pineapple like Kona Sugarloaf.  Somewhat bland, watered down flavor.  Some sweetness, some acidity.

Basically like a watered down version of Sugarloaf.  This pineapple was grown in an area near where I successfully fruited a white Jade which turned out much sweeter.

Not sure if this is typical or perhaps the irrigation system gave this plant too much water :)

Overall, this ones looks were more impressive than it's taste.

Update: my wife just tasted it and she spit it out and said "yuck.  It's tart."

A couple of years ago, Adam sold me a few white stripes pineapple plants.  The first one has finally fruited.  Will cut open and taste tommorow.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red Morning Jackfruit tasted
« on: July 11, 2017, 09:50:55 PM »
This morning I discovered that one of the fruits on my Red Morning Jackfruit tree had begun to soften.  And it had a deeper sound when I tapped gently with my fingers on the fruit in comparison to the unripe fruits.  At the time, the ripe or was only noticable when I put my nose right up to the fruit.

The fruit was 20 pounds.  The tree was purchased on Rob's recommendation (bsbullie) from Excalibur as a 3 gallon tree approximately 3 years ago.  The tree has been very vigorous, reaching 15 feet tall after 2 or 2.5 years in the ground.

At dinnertime the aroma filled the house.  The fruit was much softer.

The bulbs were large.  The flesh was crunchy for a Jackfruit.  Low latex.  The flesh was very sweet and a good amount of acidity...more acidity and sweetness than I had tasted in a Jackfruit previously.  It reminded me of a sweet tart jackfruit candy.

Delicious fruit.  Highly recommended.

Got my Alano from Fruitscapes

Hi beefyboy.

Its interesting how they've got those months wrong at least for my area .  Mine is definitely Alano.  It's a great choice.  Rich maple syrup type sweet taste.

I have an Alano in Sarasota.  It produces very well, from May through September at least.

At Fruitscapes on Pine Island, Silas Woods and Makok are dwarf trees that produce heavily, for several months.  Their Molix trees also produce very well, but not as heavily as Dolas Woods and Makok.  Alano at my house in Sarasota produces about as well as their Molix trees.

Oxkutzcab produces poorly.  Excalibur produces pretty well at Fruitscapes, maybe a bit less than Molix.

I wish I had planted a tikal.  Jeff says it has two fruiting seasons per year.

I have tasted a few different white sapote varieties including Redlands and smathers and Excalibur suebelle (not same as California suebelle), as well as some seedlings.

Smathers is an impressively large fruit, but I detected a pine after taste that didn't appeal to me.

Redlands was a decent sized fruit but was just a plain sweet custard flavor, very one dimensional. I had a Redlands tree and it was a vigorous grower but died when i over watered it

The Excalibur suebelle was the one that stood out for both my wife and I.  It was a sweet custard flavor with a lemon / citrus taste mixed in.  Delicious.  The tree seems pretty tough too
You can only purchase this at Excalibur.  Other suebelle trees sold elsewhere are typically the true suebelle which is a different tree that has a very hard time surviving our Florida climate.

We have been using a rabbit sized have a heart trap baited with a scoop of peanut butter.  Once a squirrel is caught, it is relocated.

What about a motion activated water sprayer?

Shot,

It appears that what is sold as Ohia on Pine Island is actually the true Hak Ip.

Was this year a good one for FZS production for you?  You live near the Painters?

Do you do anything special for your Lychees such as fertilizer, withholding water, etc?

Hi Sonny

I live in Osprey.  It's a few miles south of siesta key.

The following grow well here: Lychees, longans, avocado, jackfruit, coconut, jaboticaba, fig, dragonfruit, persimmon, sugar apple, blueberries, sapodilla, starfruit, etc.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango variety IDs?
« on: June 21, 2017, 09:24:54 PM »
A friend has asked if anyone can help identify these two mango varieties.  He bought the trees a few years ago from a local guy in the area who sells fruit trees on the side.

The trees are grafted but my friend never got the variety names.

Thanks

Brad

Hi Clint. Thanks for the picture.  It looks as if maybe a dozen of the seedlings survived. Interesting how some are thicker than others. It will be interesting to see if they ever fruit.

Thanks for the update.  Too bad no fruit.  Hopefully soon.

Any recent pics?

We had the best luck with several pieces of reflective tape tied to the tree as well as a rabbit sized have a heart trap. If you go this route be careful not to buy the squirrel sized one because it turns out not to be large enough and the squirrels Escape.

Most of the flowers on my trees have turned brown and died

The only thing left are some tiny fruits on the sweetheart tree.  They're half the size of a pea, but I don't expect them to hold this late in the season.

Pug:. We had decent results on a lychee tree by tieing holographic tape pieces onto the branches to deter the birds, and a rabbit sized have a heart trap under the tree for squirrels.

Hello

I'm interested in 10 seeds.

Are you sure they are Vernon?  I thought Vernon was ripe in the fall.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee fruit set 2017?
« on: April 09, 2017, 07:16:27 PM »
Curious if anyone has had lychee fruit set this season.

I have (4 years in ground) sweetheart, emperor, ohia, and kaimana trees.

Sweetheart flowered profusely but almost all of the pinhead-sized fruit has fallen off.

A Brewster lychee tree in town had very light fruit set and the fruits are maybe thumb sized.

I didn't follow any practices such as pruning new growth flushes from October through early December, or withholding irrigation beginning in September.

Anyone had luck this year?
