Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing Ugni myricoides?
« on: July 05, 2016, 11:45:12 AM »
Oh ok, I thought since they were smaller seeds they would sprout quickly etc. I guess I shouldn't assume. I think I found a source for regular Ugni molinae, I would still like if any had the Ugni myrcioides for trade or sale though ;D

Can they be grown from air layer or cuttings? I have heard that they are very slow to mature and I have tried them from seeds before with no success.

Do any of you have plants for sale or trade of either of the Ugni species?

The prices are actually quite reasonable but they have a $50 minimum, plus EMS might add a lot of money. As soon as I get my permits straight I am for sure going to order quite a few things.

Mammee in Munich?! What kind of market was this?

A while back I got an entire box full of Mamoncillo sent to me from Puerto Rico, the fruits taste wise were one of the best fruits I have encountered, texture wise like a really stringy, fibrous mango. The seeds look like a tiny avocado seed and are propagated similarly. The trees grow slow for me at least, a two year old specimen being only 6 inches tall. I would go for it if I were you guys, they are quite interesting and are somewhat rare.

I have two pink graffiti dragon fruits that I bought and grew from cuttings. I've had them for at least 2 years now and neither of them have done any vining and only one of them has put out a single branch. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe it has something to do with where in the World you live... A land that makes difficult growing any manner of edible flora.
Yeah, well, I live in southern Michigan sadly. The plants are taken in every winter and kept under intense grow lights and watered not too regularly. I even have applied cacti fertilizer to no avail. I can post pics if needed but I would just like them to grow... I have seen other northern tropical fruit growers like one person from Pennsylvania actually have several large fruiting dragon fruit and I still have these little twerps. I might-as-well buy new cuttings at this stage.

At first I had no clue what you were talking about, but then I looked it up on google and saw that it was what my mom's family calls Ube, or Nsafu/Atanga. I have a whole bag of them in my freezer for cooking anything that calls for ''bush butter". I buy them from my local African market and have only seen them frozen. If I find any fresh I will let you know. If the whole fruit is aloud to come into the US I assume the seeds should be too, the trick is finding them for sale. They are common throughout all of West Africa, but especially Cameroon, so look for people from there. Dacryodes edulis or Nsafu in Cameroon.

You can buy large Che trees, seedless varieties at that, on the websites edible landscaping and just fruits and exotics.

I live in Michigan, my growing season is about 5 months. I grew Kiwano the year before last successfully by starting seeds early, planting in a sunny location, and watering only when the leaves wilted. They didn't flower for a very long time so I was about ready to give up but then around August, almost the end of the growing season, they started to flower like crazy. I ended up getting only like 6 decently sized fruits but they were delicious nonetheless. They didn't ripen until early October which for us is usually the end of anything living. If you eat them raw, they taste like lemon cucumbers, if you eat them with sugar they actually taste like a sweet banana pineapple combo. Anyway, I think it may have been the decreasing daylight hours that triggered the flowering because they grew larger/longer than any of my other plants including beans, melons of all sorts, cucumbers, peas. They were just starting to flower when my other melons were already setting fruit. I really like how drought and pest resistant they are tho, as they withstood squash beetles that killed my cucumbers as if nothing had happened. I'm sure they will eventually flower since they are native to southern Africa and have been naturalized in Australia.

Oh right! Thank you so much. Once in a while I remember a plant's looks but can't remember it's name.

Does anyone know the name of a fruit that I believe is from Brazil, the size of a grape, similar looks to a jabo with dark purple to black skin, but orange on the inside. I saw a picture a few days ago but haven't been able to find it since and can't get it out of my mind. I think it was a Myrtaceae but I'm not sure. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please help.

I think it would work personally. People literally chop the entire tree down once dormant and new shoots appear in the spring. I think it will be fine for at least a few years. Root pruning might be possible as well.

I've heard the same thing. Dwarf june plum/ambarella is also a Spondias, and can be easily grown in a pot and will fruit within a year. That might be your best bet. It is fairly commonly sold in vietnamese markets but the fruits are usually picked green and far too early to have a good seed. I got one from Logee's a while ago but it since has died. I honestly don't know why either, it was healthy, then it went dormant for winter, I cut back watering and it still got moldy at the top and then it just died from top to bottom. I sprayed it with neem and still nothing helped. Anyway, I really want to fruit a Spondias of any kind as they are all quite delicious and like a small mango.

142
I actually thought I saw a stand of them on the way to New York city while passing through New Jersey but I was on the freeway and didn't want to risk my life for some fruit, regardless, I am looking and one day I will find them.

143
I have one small yellow mombin that is almost a year old. They aren't hard to grow from seeds which I bought from tradewindsfruit.com. They also sell red ones periodically and even have kaffir plums, an African relative to the mombin.

Do you have access to any of these plants...?

Especially the Mama-cadela and/or the Pera do campo

I live in Michigan where there is supposed to be an abundance of Asimina triloba, but I have still yet to find any wild. I am going to be buying a few trees of named varieties to plant in my yard but would like to at least try a wild fruit or find a wild stand. Every time I drive southward I look for them but end up finding none. Anyway, they seem to be more rare than people let on.
