« on: January 22, 2016, 08:28:13 PM »
Trade winds fruits is selling a ton of papaya relatives and interesting papaya varieties. I have V. Monoica, Waimonalo strawberry something or another, and Maradol growing in pots here in Michiga, indoors of course, but my maradol keep getting base/stem rot and I can't seem to stop it:(

Tradewindsfruits has a ton of rare papaya relatives and a few interesting papaya varieties. I have V. Monoica, Maradol and Strawberry Hawaiian. I've seen honey papaya on ebay or on rareseeds.com and I have seen klao tom or tainung dwarf papayas on ebay.

Spondias mombin is very close to Ambarella, they are in the same genus in fact! Both are easy to grow in containers but both are deciduous tropical plants which are sometimes tricky. Mombin are a bit bigger I think than ambarella in size.

Lilith-vzla-Do you have Jacaratia, and chontaduro

what are all of the things that are in season now? I know d. kutajensis, baccaurea, but do you have kelili and gitak or mata kucing?

There are plenty of stores in chinatown, but so far out of all of the ones I visited (which are a lot) don't carry or have them.
I found them once here in Detroit area at Kim Nhung, a Vietnamese grocery store, twice in Toronto Chinatown, and I think once in Montreal somewhere. They might not be in season right now... People usually pick them green and unripe so as to eat them with salt and chilies, but if you want the ripe sweet mango type, I'm not sure where to find those.

Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai and possibly Chinese markets should have them when they are in season.

Don't worry Rob I rarely make pies these days.I eat pies once week or so but usually meat pies, steak and mushy pea, cottage pies, steak and kidney and more of the ones in every gas station and corner shop.I do like dessert pies as well like apple, apricot or apple and rhubarb.Mashed pumpkin in a pie sounds unusual to me but I'm sure it is nice or would not be popular.
Imagine sweet potatoes with cinnamon and sugar and that's sort of what pumpkin pie tastes like. My family usually made sweet potato pie instead of the pumpkin pie, but still both are good.

yes Coco Chris is my friend and we have the fe'i that is here in  hawaii.. looking for all the different types from else where..some might not be called fe'i ...im looking for the bananas with the deep orange flesh from the soloman islands and other pacific islands.
 thanks for caring:)
There is one from I think Ponhpei called Karat Puehu, it's so fat it's almost round and is red on the outside and orange on the inside, also one called Utimwah with the same coloration but long and skinny. Maybe some Guam, Chamorro, or Tongans brought some of these malimali(mai'a) from their home countries...

Are these able to be grown in container? Most Psidium and Campomanesia are small enough to be grown in a pot, so is this as well?

PS i love this species name "torta" because it means cake in spanish! You can have your cake and eat it too!  :D

Torta doesn't mean cake in all Latin American countries.  For example, Cubans don't use the word Torta for cake. Back in the old days in Cuba, cakes were known as Pastel. Don't confuse that with pastelito cause it's something different.

We use "torta" as a short slang/abbreviation for the word Tortillera, which means Lesbian.  :o

It's interesting, cause even though all latin American countries speak the same language, they all have different ways of speaking.  A Spanish word could have different meanings, depending on what country from Latin America you're from.

Spanish is my first language. Torta means cake in Spain and in all of spanish speaking South America. Pastel usually means pie, not cake. What you are saying about it meaning lesbian is purely slang, not official language. True every country has different slang.

Very interesting Ricardo and the foliage looks alot like what I see in some vines here. You need a volunteer for the taste test because it could be something special.

Today I tried a Syzigium fruit that was shiny and deep red and looked like a big Malay apple with red flesh.Wild native trees are planted around my work building and the 2m pink flushed trees are spectacular and I could not figure out what species. The flesh was acidic but it couldhave some uses as the trees were loaded. The photos are not downloading due to computer problems.
could be a laulau tree
