Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Annual Mulch Sale
« on: March 03, 2016, 12:05:39 PM »
At Lowe's South Florida stores.  $1.00 a bag.  I bought 90 bags this morning (Pompano Beach).  Supposed to be until March 5, but at the rate they're being scooped up they may last only until the end of the day!  I would call ahead to your nearest store.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Curling of New Avocado Leaves
« on: November 30, 2015, 10:56:37 AM »
Does anyone know what causes new, tender avocado leaves to curl and wilt at the ends (not the entire leaf)?  This is an issue I continually see with my young avocado trees, but overall it doesn't seem to harm the tree.  Is it from some kind of nutrient/mineral deficiency?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango--Too Young for Fruit?
« on: November 19, 2015, 09:23:25 AM »
I planted a Providence mango tree in August.  It was tiny when I bought it, but I've never seen a tree take off like this one.  It's flushing constantly and putting on much new growth.  Would it be a mistake to let it hold a few fruit next spring if it blossoms?  Does it need to establish itself first and only be allowed to hold fruit in 2017?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I Nominate Neelam (for Worst)
« on: July 26, 2015, 04:39:48 PM »
I nominate Neelam for the worst-tasting mango.  I've heard its off-flavor described as "carrot."  I'd call it "just plain nasty."  This was another mango where I fell for the Richard Campbell hype without tasting it.  Maybe if you had 50 mango trees, you could include Neelam, but if you only have four trees like me, you definitely don't want Neelam.  I don't care that it's a late-season mango--I'm chopping mine down!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / PPK Tree vs. Lemon Zest Tree
« on: June 18, 2015, 09:11:36 AM »
How do PPK trees and Lemon Zest trees compare in size and growth pattern?

31
As of this Saturday 7/13, Truly Tropical in Delray Beach (http://delraymango.blogspot.com/) has around 35 varieties of mangos for sale.  Which ones should I definitely try?  I'm thinking Dot, Cushman, and Edward.  I've already tasted Mallika and PPK.  How about Mulgoba?  I missed today, but I'm thinking about going by on Wednesday.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is Angie a Top-Tier Mango?
« on: June 13, 2015, 04:18:06 PM »
I'm finding Angie to be not as sweet as most mangos.  They fall off the tree when still green.  And flavor-wise they just don't make it as a top-tier mango.  My son (22) who grew up in Florida and has been eating mangos all his life refuses to eat them.  He says they taste "spoiled" to him.  Once they're cut open you can't leave a half in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap like you can most mangos.  The flavor tends to deteriorate rapidly.

What are others experiencing?

Another mango season is upon us in South Florida.  Some of us poor, deprived beings have yet to try Lemon Zest, Sweet Tart, Coconut Cream, and Mahachanok.  Please advise us where (and when) we will be able to purchase a few of each.  Thank you!

I have two trees I'll be removing.  A Mauritius Lychee with a height of about 8 feet, and a Viejo Mamey Sapote, which is about ten feet.  If you want to come by and dig them up, they're yours.  Please PM me.  They're healthy trees.  (They don't quite fit into my "grand scheme.")

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Most Invasive and Destructive Roots
« on: March 25, 2015, 08:51:52 AM »
Which fruit trees have the most invasive and destructive roots and should definitely not be placed near a house or concrete slab?  And at the other end of the spectrum, which fruit trees have the least damaging roots?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Aphids on Guanabana (Soursop) Tree
« on: January 13, 2015, 09:04:54 PM »
My small guanabana tree is totally covered with giant aphids.  Has anyone else had this problem? What's the best remedy? Do you think it's possibly just a weak tree and should be replaced with a more hardy specimen?  A neighbor's tree has zero aphids, is much healthier looking than mine, and he does nothing to care for it.

Do you think this variety will ever make it from Down Under to South Florida??? :-\ :-\ :-\

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Oro Negro vs. Monroe Avocado
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:58:17 AM »
Okay, those of you who have tasted them side by side, what do you think?  I know Mike Bender's been selling them both over the past month, but I never got a chance to get over there.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jabo or Longan?
« on: January 01, 2015, 10:11:04 PM »
I have room for 3 more trees in 2015.  I'm thinking Lemon Zest mango, Lisa atemoya, and either jaboticaba or longan.  Which do you prefer and why between jaboticaba and longan?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Will My Lychee Ever Bear Fruit?
« on: December 08, 2014, 12:16:05 PM »
I'm located less than a mile from the ocean, north Broward county--not much winter chill here.  What are the chances that my Mauritius lychee tree will ever bear fruit?  It's three years old and constantly putting out new growth, including right now in December, but not a blossom in sight.  Should I replace it with something more suitable for this location and forget about lychees altogether?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Last Mango Growth Flush for 2014?
« on: October 09, 2014, 05:49:24 PM »
Three (out of four total) of my mango trees have had a growth flush during the past week.  I'm thinking this should be it for 2014.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Miguel vs. Lula Avocado (Taste Comparison)
« on: September 18, 2014, 02:40:43 PM »
I ate a slice of a late Miguel and a slice of an early Lula avocado today.  The Lula was a little more watery in texture, being so early in the season.  But as far as taste goes, Lula definitely beats out Miguel.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Keitt Mango
« on: September 03, 2014, 06:38:05 PM »
Is it pronounced "kit" or "keet?"  And does it matter?  (I've heard it both ways, but primarily the former.)

By the way, I ate one today and find it a very pleasant-flavored mango--not knock-your-socks-off great, but very pleasant and agreeable and a little tart.  In my area, Keitt trees have no problems and are healthy.  Must be the ocean breeze.

Does any South Florida nursery have "SF" persimmon trees in stock at this time?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hass Avocados from Dominican Republic?
« on: April 26, 2014, 04:47:57 PM »
I was very suprised to find Hass avocados from the Dominican Republic at a local grocery store.  I've seen them from Mexico and Chile.  These were the first from DR.  An interesting thing about them is that the skin doesn't turn black when the fruit is ripe,  It turns brown.  Any comments from our friends in DR or PR?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Simmonds Avocados This Summer?
« on: April 16, 2014, 11:38:31 AM »
Is this even possible?  Here's the story.  I planted a 3-gal. Simmonds tree a year ago.  It grew pretty fast in a year's time.  It put out blossoms a couple of months ago, and is holding a few fruit.  Will this fruit ripen THIS SUMMER?  Seems phenomenal!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Miguel Avocado Tree Available
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:38:32 AM »
I have a 7 ft. tall, 6 ft. wide Miguel avocado tree available because it's located too close to my new brick paver driveway.  PM me if interested.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Hass Avocados at Aldi
« on: March 12, 2014, 08:24:00 AM »
An Aldi stored opened in our neighborhood a few weeks ago.  Right now they're selling Hass avocados (from Mexico) for 29 cents each--just the thing to get us through the spring, if that price holds up! ;D

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / 2 Free Trees Available
« on: March 06, 2014, 07:37:03 AM »
I have a Mahachanok mango and a Hak Ip lychee tree--both about 5 ft. tall--that someone can have if he/she is willing to dig them up (carefully) and haul them away.  I have the shovel!  They were planted in the wrong place.  I'm in Deerfield, east of I-95.  PM me, if interested.  Otherwise, they get the ax. :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multi-Variety Avocado Trees
« on: November 24, 2013, 04:32:17 PM »
Does anyone have experience with more than one variety grafted on to an avocado tree?  Is this procedure generally successful?  I was thinking it would be nice to add an additional variety to each of the three trees I currently have.
