Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fig Trees in October
« on: October 28, 2013, 12:54:29 PM »
Is it normal for a fig tree to be shedding all its leaves and entering dormancy in October (as mine is doing)?  The variety I planted last spring is LSU Purple, which is supposed to be one of the better varieties for South Florida.  The tree has not grown much since planted, and the new leaves had become progressively smaller.  Is this considered normal for a young fig tree?  How many years should I give it before I consider replacing it with something more suitable to this climate?  (I grew up with fig trees in L.A.--incredible fruit--and I couldn't resist planting one.  Was that a mistake in South Florida?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Hass Cultivar ("Grandma's"--Delray Beach)

http://eatinglocalinthetropics.blogspot.com/2012/01/who-says-hass-avocados-dont-grow-in.html

I think it would be worthwhile if someone with grafting skills (Jeff, Carlos, Jason, Har, Noel, Mike?) contacted the author and tried to get some scion wood from this tree to produce additional trees.  It sounds like a great addition to the Hass collection in Florida.  Otherwise, one of these days the gardeners at the senior community are going to chop it down because senior communities don't allow fruit trees!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Watery Avocados (Florida)
« on: September 06, 2013, 09:45:49 AM »
We all know that Florida avocados don't have the oil content of California avocados.  But so far all the avocados sold here in the stores this summer (as low as 50 cents each), have been EXTREMELY watery and flavorless.  Why is this?  Are they being picked too early?  Can I avoid this problem if I'm growing them at home?

54
We purchased some avocados that had light stripes running the length of the fruit.  I believe this is a characteristic of Miguel.  Do any others have this characteristic?  Whatever variety they are, they were picked way too early, as they were totally watery without any oil content--not too appetizing!  Would a South Florida grower actually pick and sell Miguel avocados at the end of June, or could this be a different (not too good) variety?

Who knows anything about Peach Cobbler mango?  Is it another Zill introduction?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When Are Neelam Mangos Ripe?
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:15:24 PM »
What do Neelam mangos look like when they're ready to be picked?  The ones on my tree have turned yellow on the top (maybe 10%?), but otherwise they're still very green and rock hard.  I know they're supposed to be a late mango, but all varieties have been early this year in the South of Florida!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Phet Pakchong or Lisa Atemoya
« on: June 17, 2013, 10:12:07 AM »
If you had to choose between Phet Pakchong and Lisa atemoyas, which one would it be?  My understanding is that PP is more consistent in quality and doesn't require hand pollination.  Any special qualities of Lisa?  Which has the better flavor and texture, or how do they differ in that regard?  What about the size and growth pattern/structure of the 2 trees?  I know the best option would be to plant both, but at this point I think I have room for only one.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How Do You Start a Tree from a Cutting?
« on: June 03, 2013, 10:53:05 AM »
I've never done this before.  How do you start a tree from a cutting, such as guava?

What is the best avocado for South Florida that is at its peak of ripening in October?  It seems that many are July-to-September and November-to-January, but what great variety is in-between?

Is it true that you absolutely should not mulch citrus trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cancer-Fighting Fruits/Leaves/Plants
« on: May 04, 2013, 11:09:16 PM »
Which fruits or plants are said to have cancer-fighting properties?  I know of guanabana, noni, and wheatgrass.  Are there others?

I have a healthy 5-ft. Beverly mango tree that has been in the ground about 15 months.  It looks to be a vigorous grower--too vigorous for the allotted space! :o  It's definitely not a compact tree like the 4 other mango trees I planted.  Besides, I've been ordered  by my wife to use the space for something other than mango. ;)

So it's yours if you'd like to come by and dig it up.  If you have a fruit tree or plant to trade, that would be nice, but it isn't necessary--as long as you let me come by to visit my tree when it's bearing and leave with a bag full of fruit! :)  I'm conveniently located near I-95.  PM or email me if interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Big Red Sugar Apple
« on: April 29, 2013, 06:01:59 PM »
Who else is growing this besides its source, FloridaGreenMan Noel?  How much do you like it?  How is the texture and flavor?  Is it one of the best if not the best sugar apple?  I'm still hoping to get a little tree to plant someday.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Persimmon Trees in South Florida
« on: April 08, 2013, 01:38:27 PM »
So far my Triumph persimmon is still dormant, showing no spring acitivity.  In fact, the last time it showed any growth at all was the middle of last summer.  Should I be concerned?  What should I expect with this tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Glenn Mango
« on: April 07, 2013, 11:57:11 PM »
A Glenn mango tree in my neighborhood has set so much fruit this year that one of the limbs has broken from the load.  What a perfect round and compact shape Glenn trees have!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ground Cover for Barren Lot
« on: March 22, 2013, 07:53:24 PM »
I desperately need some helpful suggestions.  We're considering purchasing a little house on a 13,000 sq. ft. lot in Boca Raton, west of I-95.  The lot is totally neglected and barren--no trees, no grass, nothin, folks!  Perfect for planting fruit trees, right?  The wife thinks we have to put down sod because "it looks terrible, like rednecks live there."  Now I'd be perfectly happy to be a redneck with a lot of fruit trees!  Eventually the trees will grow together, and it'll look okay.  But in the meantime what could I use for ground cover (compatible with and helpful to fruit trees) because she'd make my life miserable complaining if I did nothing? :( :'(

Friends, I need your best ideas on this one.  I hate St. Augustine grass--it's a total waste! >:(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is Guanabana Super-Sensitive to Cold?
« on: December 31, 2012, 12:15:27 AM »
My guanabana tree (about six months in the ground) was doing very well, but after a recent cold front most of the leaves turned brown and fell off. :(  It's on the east side of my house behind a wooden gate/fence, not affording it major protection against the cold north wind.  Should I be concerned? ???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lula Avocado
« on: October 21, 2012, 11:34:47 PM »
I picked up some Lula avocados ($0.50 each) at a small produce store on Federal in Pompano Beach.  Although their oil content isn't too high, they're still smooth and creamy, not watery, with fine flavor.  Huge seeds, though!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Which Atemoya Should I Plant?
« on: September 12, 2012, 06:20:50 PM »
Which of these three produces the best quality, most delicious fruit?  Geffner, Lisa, or Phetpakchong? The Aussies will probably say "none of the above," but I need one that's available locally.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lima
« on: September 02, 2012, 05:31:45 PM »
Does anyone know the South American fruit, which is called "lima" in Bolivia and Peru?  In flavor it's like a cross between lemon and lime, but sweet and a little bland.  It's also, I believe, a little larger than either and somewhat irregular in shape with a light green skin.  I can't find the scientific name or scholarly information on the internet--only one casual reference.  I'm growing 2 plants from seed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Stones in Avocado Pulp
« on: September 01, 2012, 12:34:13 PM »
My friend has a Choquette avocado tree.  The fruit can be quite good.  On the other hand,  a lot of the fruit has "stones" in the flesh to the point that his wife is making him remove the tree and replace it with another variety. :'(  What causes this problem, and what is the remedy?

South Florida people, are you starting to pick your Keitt mangos?  And by the way, is it pronounced "kit" or "keet?"

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Moving My Pickering Mango Tree
« on: August 06, 2012, 10:42:06 AM »
I planted my Pickering tree last Jan./Feb.  It had no growth at all until late spring, but once it took off it just won't stop!  It's now 42 inches tall by 42 inches wide, perfectly shaped and easily the largest and most beautiful of all my 2012 mango additions.  Unfortunately, I didn't allow sufficient space for it in that corner of the yard so I'm going to have to move it.  I know I have to try to get as big a rootball as possible.  However, my sandy soil doesn't cling but falls away in big chunks very easily.  Any suggestions about successfully moving this tree?

Mango trees are forgiving, and killing this tree would probably be impossible.  But it's a beauty, and I hate to set it back.  Also, if I plant it at the side of my house where it would get a half-day of full sunshine, would that be sufficient for proper growth and fruit set? ???
