Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Potting mix
« on: September 22, 2016, 10:48:31 AM »
Cheers bloko! 👍  yeah, bit expensive alright but I been getting 12 month old corg to a foot tall in that mix and other stuff I have used it has taken two years to get same size but not as thick and healthy foliage. Osmocote comes out dark green big leaves and flowering at a large size sooner. Got no room to keep a bulk made special lot or else i would propably give it a go. I have got pretty fussy when it comes to my potting soil.

I have been using Scotts osmocote acid azalea mix and also multipurpose and cacti mix of same brand. Best stuff I have used and I have tried them all. Results are pretty unreal for eugenias and jabos. Dont know how it would compare price wise with your made to order stuff but 50l of mix I pay about 18 bucks for. Little expensive but as I say, results speak for themselves.

Nice Adam. There's only one of mine with more than a few flowers but all of them have at least a couple. How pretty is the new foliage? All of them are loaded with blood red new growth.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Overproductive Fruit Trees... As fodder!

Avocado, toxic to horses cattle goats and dogs. Nothing mentioned of pigs, may be immune to the chemical persin being omnivorous like humans. Can cause respiratory distress, congestion and fluid buildup around the heart leading to death. Persin is found in the bark, leaves, skin and pit. Some varieties have higher levels of the chemical.

One word of caution, just about feeding avocados to livestock, I'm pretty sure the leaves skin and seed of avocado are toxic to animals like horses cattle and other critters. Might be good idea to check up on such things. Also coconuts seem to be great pig feed, we went for a trip to some islands and on lifou and Vanuatu they keep there pigs in little pens and split coconuts and the pigs eat the nut and the husk acted like a bedding material. A cook islander mate tells me there is nothing like eating pig fed on coconuts.

Up to four plants flowering for first time now. Hope should be enough genetic difference to get a good pollination rate and get some fruit.

Yeah the thought had crossed my mind also. There seems to be plenty of variation in pyriformis so depending on what form you used in your cross would create some drastic differences compared I suppose to most crosses you find already. Lutescens is a hard one to find, found a few people that have it but wont sell seeds only plants in brazil. Keep on looking! ;D

Yeah they do look closely related though, not saying they are all impossible like i said in previous post I reckon itaguahiensis and grumi look like they could readily hybridise but there would be no benefit from the cross whereas pyriformis lutescens is imparting the sweet fruit genetics of a hard to grow plant into a tart fruit plant that grows feral so there is some benefit to that cross. There would definitely be more than one person attempt that hybrid with such a good outcome as pyriformis lutescens  though I wonder how much variation there is between different sources as we all know every hybrid will not be the same.

True, fast fruiting is definitely a bonus when trying hybridizing plants, definately makes waiting a little easier. I couldn't read that chart the other day as every time I tried to make it larger it became too pixelated to read but that would certainly be of great help when deciding suitable stock.

You certainly could try but the foliage and growth habits of those three are very different. Pretty sure corg and pitangatuba will not work, They are too different. Just because you can get them fruiting in two years doesn't mean that they share close enough genetic compatability even though they share the same genus. Cedar bay and corg may be a bit more compatible but I still dont think I would be successful. But there is only one way to find out and make sure you post your results. Never know, might be lucky to come up with the new hybrid to knock pyriformis lutescens off its perch.

I think a lot are not compatible with each other even though they are same family and the ones that could propably wouldn't benefit from it eg corg and calycina I take it they taste similar but if you were crossing for bigger corg fruit you may aswell just grow calycina or grumichama maybe with itaguahiensis would be imparting slow growth habit from itaguahiensis and similar flavours. The thought crossed my mind many times when I first started off but after growing so many of them now you can tell alot wont be compatible.

Had to ring them up and she spouted on about permits and bicon. But she then said as long as it is in airtight packaging and labelled with full botanic name there's no reason it should not turn up. Bloody confusing, what are the permits for?

Yep, just had package turn up and seeds destroyed. Reckon packaging has to be airtight or it will not be allowed through.

Pretty sure the little black seed specs in Cavendish do not germinate , Cavendish is grown here through tissue culture. I would question them on that one.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Feel the Bern...I mean....burn
« on: September 11, 2016, 05:30:32 PM »
Burn in small sections. Once you have cleared your patch it may be a wise idea to rest the beds, if you havnt got anything for the diseases to survive on they die out and then practice crop rotation. If you plant same species or similar species in the same spot season after season you will get a build up of disease in the soil. Hope this helps.

Very good.
