Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sapodilla Trees in Downtown Boynton Beach
« on: January 14, 2014, 02:14:20 PM »
Me and cwojo from the forum are always on the lookout in the city for older tropical fruit trees. I came across these Sapodilla trees a couple days ago. Me and Cody(cwojo), and another guy we work with decided to get a closer look. One tree was trimmed so high that you can only get fruits dropped to the grown. They were excellent in flavor, silky smooth texture, and a bit grainy close to skin. There were some that were smaller due to poor pollination apparently as they had no seeds. The larger ones were still in the trees mocking us. I'll try to frequent this area more and look for some of the larger ones..stop by after a windy day maybe..The second tree was easy to climb but because of shading from some nearby mango trees most of the fruits were sparse and out of reach…We came across a sausage tree too..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Low % on Jackfruit grafts
« on: January 02, 2014, 04:21:44 PM »
So far I've had only 2 out of 10 Jackfruit grafts survive. maybe its the time of year. wasn't really sure what the standard was for grafting these. I tried wedge and veneer..The wedge is the only ones that took. I didn't bag them but I left 1/2 leaf on and put them in with my passionfruit cuttings with high humidity..I got 1 Excalibur Red and 1 Cristella to take…I'll be planting these at the fire station..here is a pic of Exc Red..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting passiflora...
« on: January 02, 2014, 04:06:53 PM »
I've had pretty good success rooting my Panama Red passionfruit cuttings…I'm sitting around 70% every time now….I use moisture control potting mix from miracle grow on these. I make wedge cuts in the cuttings to try to expose more surface area. Then, dip them in rooting hormone..I tap the cutting to get off all the excess rooting hormone..I keep 1/2 leaf per cutting…I place in fish tank/terrarium to keep up humidity. The bottom is lined with 1" thick of hydroton. Then I fill with water to just below level of hydroton. These work really great as they are expanded clay pellets which speed up evaporation and raise the humidity in the tank. I keep tank partially covered and within 2-2.5 weeks I have roots coming out of the bottoms of these pots..some of them will naturally drop the leaf while others retain it..The ones that fail seem to suffer from rot…I was thinking of trying three small cuttings per pot and just cut out the weakest growers..

I've also noted the bigger the cutting I use the more rapidly it will grow and survival rate is higher..

also I'm up for trades if anyone interested..would like to try other passifloras...

Running out of room in my yard and wondering if Canistel 'Trompo' will keep its spot. What other Pouterias have you grafted on Canistel? Ross Sapote or Lucuma? Caimito or Sapodilla? I know there are some threads that talk about it but can't find anything concrete.

My Coconut Cream and Sweet Tarts put out huge  growth flushes recently as did my Emperor Lychee. Although I didn't expect much from the ST because of size I was hoping for a CC at least…so, any chance of getting flowers/fruits on these?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 'Custer's Red' Avocado
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:52:50 PM »
I got to try a 'Lula' avocado and the Custer's Red side by side the other day…The Custer's Red really blew me away…I haven't tried a bunch of different avos but I'm pretty impressed with some that I have tried recently..Though the Lula is a bit sweet and weak in depth of flavor me..I really appreciate 3 out of the last 4 I've tried including 'Nishikawa', 'Mollina', and 'Custer's Red'…also my neighbors seedling tree that tastes liked it was passed through a hickory smoker for a little bit…here are some pics from the Custer's Red..the bottom pic shows the two 'Mollina' avos before they were ripened up…also some Excalibur Gold passionfruit..
sorry forgot to take pic of inside…i think we just ate it to quick..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 'Molina' Avocado
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:42:23 PM »
Molina was helping me the other day Excalibur and she took me and my buddy behind the grafting house to an avocado tree planted along the canal on the back of the property. I got to try it today and found it to be excellent in taste and texture..almost reminded me of the 'Nishikawa' avocado Rob gave me last year..it almost had a buttered popcorn flavor to it, nice and creamy not watery at all with a bit of sweetness…She said Richard was thinking of grafting it and selling it…I'll definitely pick one up if they do release it… named after the infamous 'Molina'…

I think this guy and his buddies are keeping the sri slanka weevils of my lychees..I thank them dearly..

I haven't noticed one weevil in my yard in a while. All my lychee trees look healthy again. Do these critters have a season of destruction...maybe they are just dormant now? anyone else notice this? I've used no chemicals to treat them either.

On recent outings with my kids I've come across various forms of cocoplum..noticing the difference in leaves immediately it was apparent..So, I've learned there is a coastal (small leafed variety) and an inland variety  (noted by its new growth being red)...on a trek in the everglades I came across the regular dark purple variety and then I saw for the first time a red/white variety growing right next to it...then on another outing in a scrub area we came across a very large fruited variety, very sweet too...really enjoyed this one...also we came across something so similar looking to cocoplum I had to try it...I later found out it was gopher apple..my daughter really enjoyed this one...we also had quite a few different sea grapes..variable in taste some sweet some tart...and I found one prickly pair..and I finally identfied (I think) asimina reticulata...

First five picks are from the everglades...

the rest of these pics are from various coastal scrub areas..

gopher apple..plant only grows 3"-12"..pretty cool little plant

Gopher apple (Licani michauxii)-grows very well in coastal sandy areas..favorite of the gopher tortoise...tastes somewhat like bublegum from a pack of baseball cards with texture of cocoplum..maybe a little creamier...

large fruited cocoplum from coastal variety in scrub area...

small fruited purple variety--everglades

smaller red and purple were from everglades..all of these are coastal varieities  and the gopher apple is on far right for comparison

Asimina reticulata?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need ID
« on: August 06, 2013, 07:53:31 AM »
Found this growing in the lot next to my friends house...I know I shouldn't have tried it without ID'ing it but...there were other fruit trees on the property so I assumed it was good..tasted like a small Caimito with an astringent/latex quality to it..I didn't get a pic of tree but will go back and get one if necessary...the tree was very large, with large leaves if I remember correctly, also it fruited mostly at the tips of the branches...

49
I noticed in a couple 1gal pots that i have there are some annona neosalicifolia seedlings growing with  some Mexican garcinia sp. (luc's)..I thought the seeds rotted but now see I was wrong and have 4 pots that have done this...the garcinia is coming up now...when would be the best time to seperate...I don't want to damage the garcinia before it fully sprouts..
