About how long after planting can one expect flower/ fruit if its in partial shade? I picked this up from Mike at Bender's Grove a few months back and planted it immediately...It's been growing fast since getting it...also has been getting  plenty of fertilizer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / uneven ripening on late season mangoes..
« on: July 13, 2013, 07:52:25 PM »
seems nearly every mango I've had recently has poor ripening or jelly seed. what has your experience been?

I'd like to get a little bit of land for planting and saw an old citrus grove being sold off in pieces...What are the drawbacks of planting on an old citrus grove? I'm thinking a lot of chelated Iron might have been used..doesn't this build up in the soil? Would a soil test show this?

Also, I was told it hasn't had Citrus since the late 80's and cows have been grazing on it since....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What causes jelly seed in a mango?
« on: July 06, 2013, 06:03:11 PM »
I had a discussion with Walter Zill and he stated that jelly seed occurs in mangoes due to the seed attempting to germinate...and he stated this is why it happens in  a lot of the late season varieties and that he has noticed no difference due to percipitation..however I recall some saying it was from excess rainfall...this is also why he said he picks his Keitts as soon as they get a slight color in order to avoid this problem...anyone else notice this in late season mangoes?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Raja Puri banana flowering-first time
« on: July 03, 2013, 09:18:24 AM »
My first banana tree to flower is the Raja Puri...Its been growing like mad as Ive been dumping tons of fert on this and also compost from my chicken coop....seems like a very sturdy banana tree, especially with the east winds I get. Also, the pups coming seem to have narrow leaves..what could be the cause of this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to increase pot size?
« on: July 02, 2013, 06:40:09 PM »
When is the best time to upsize your plants pot? I noticed when I stuck a small jaboticaba seedling in a 3gal pot it went into shock and is growing slower than the ones I up sized to a 1gal pot...I talked to Richard Wilson and he said it was normal for jabos to go into shock when upsizing. Is this your experience? Also what are the problems with planting too small of a seedling into too big of a pot?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Poor flowering on my Annonas
« on: June 23, 2013, 03:36:40 PM »
Though I do have some fruit set on my 'Gefner' none of my other annonas seemed to push out flowers except a couple here and there. I hand pollinated most of them but nearly all had failed fruit sets..I started stripping leaves of alot of the braches and they all seem to be pushing new growth and some flowers...Is the poor fruit set an environmental thing or a nutrient deficiency..Is it ok to do foliar sprays while there is fruit set on the trees? Also, do annonas benefit from chelated Fe supplement and additional sulfur?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Isle of Pine Grapefruit
« on: June 20, 2013, 06:34:46 PM »
Anyone heard of this? I found it in an old Florida Tropical fruits book at the library..supposed to be seedy but super sweet...wouldn't mind trying this as I like juicing grapefruit so the seed thing doesn't really factor in...

I have a friend who has 3 acres of land in Homestead and has 1.5 acres planted out with 'Namwah' Bananas...He wants to plant out the rest and was asking for suggestions...I was thinking of having him experiment with several different fruits including Achacha, Abiu, Soursop, Chempedak,  and maybe some others..I am looking for suggestions also on an experimental level with possibilities of introducing newer varieties of various fruits...I will talk with him more tomorrow but I would like to bring some solid info with me as to Zone requirements and realistic expectations...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / At the Swap Shop...
« on: June 01, 2013, 09:01:27 AM »
I was down is Sunrise recently and was driving past the Swap Shop at saw some fruit stands..To my wife's reluctant agreement we stopped in and I found the following:

Jackfruit..a crunchy lemon variety and best I ever tried, no latex, a lot of edible rag, though a little more chewy, and fruit easily separated...
Mammea apple..first time trying..not sure if i got at proper ripeness as it never really softened but taste was familiar just couldn't pin it on anything...I mixed it in a fruit salad and it was decent..
Sapodilla was small but super sweet...
Rambutan was about what I recall last time I had one..not crisp, half held onto seed, some easily removed, just not as refreshing when eating lychees at the same time..
also picked up some nice guavas...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Who's growing Pawpaw?
« on: May 30, 2013, 06:40:45 PM »
After doing some reaserch I found that Florida has quite a few Asiminas..The most popular being Triloba which won't fruit this far south(Zone 10). Florida has native species including A.parviflora, A.obavata, and A.reticulata amongst others..Has anyone tried growing any of these? Comments on fruit quality? Also possibilities of grafting A.triloba onto one of the other species for fruiting down south? I spoke with Teri out of Leesburg,Fl who specializes in Asiminas and she said she currently has 6 different species and soon to be 8..She told me that she knows of someone who has to A.parviflora trees in West Palm Beach that are about 15' and produce fruit...She also stated some of these varieties grow excellent in sugar sand...If anyone is intersted in contacting her for Asiminas she said give her a call...Info below

Teri-(352)504-6494
e-mail: 1bushwoman@embarqmail.com

She said all her plants are seedlings in 4"x4" pots that are in 14" deep due to extensive root system...
plants are $15 each plus shipping

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Girdling Starfruit to induce flowering
« on: May 21, 2013, 07:06:49 PM »
Also as in a similar post I am getting no flowers on my starfruit...I grew this before at my old house and couldn't eat all the fruits it produced so much...now I have a new Kari starfruit tree in the ground for about a year and a half...definitely large enough to hold fruit but I haven't even gotten it to flower..It's growing like crazy but no blooms...I used to girdle the other one at my old house to get it to fruit in off season and it worked..don't know if I should try it again or am I doing something wrong..I get alot of wind in my backyard too and have read they don't like windy conditions..Could this be my problem?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Eureka Lemon won't flower...
« on: May 21, 2013, 06:58:45 PM »
I've had the tree in the ground for almost three years...It's in full sun...I've hit it with Chelated drenches and foliar sprays of sequestrene335...Been doing foliar sprays of 20-20-20..and dropping 8-3-9 granulars on it. I also dropped some 0-0-50 on it about 3 weeks ago...I saw one flower in the past 6 months..this tree hasn't given me 1 fruit since I've had it...any suggestions?
