« on: March 26, 2018, 05:53:27 PM »
My DF are not growing on the fence, but on trellises about 4 feet away from the fence.
I will find fruit on the plant that has been eaten into from the side closest to the branch. Nothing noticeable until you move the branch and get a cloud of fruit flies lifting off.
I suspect rats climbing along the branch and eating into the fruit.
Maybe a possum.
Squirrels are pretty much kept in check at my place.
Raccoons would tear the fruit down and drag it off.

I've read through this thread and haven't seen anything that fits... so, here goes... my Haden has been in the ground for approx 10 years and has struggled the whole time.  It's starting to look decent, so I was planning on taking some scions and grafting to my Manila.   When clipping leaves, I found this...

They look like legless/headless ticks (same size and color).  They have a hard shell with yellow/orange contents.  Any idea what this is?  How harmful is it to the tree?

Thanks

Looks like katydid eggs.

My Pickering mango is in bloom, Tyler and NDM both have buds.
My Sweetheart and Hap Ik lychees are just starting to push out a flush, hoping it will be buds.

Are the skins/rinds from regular red Dragonfruit edible? What do they taste like, if they are edible?

They have such a great color that I'm wondering if I could extract it into a liquer or something.
Never tried to eat the skins, but I have dehydrated them and then seep them in hot water for a tea type of drink.

The second has straight edges different from any cereus I've seen. Any idea what this is?

My Cebra has straight edges like that.

Here's a google earth pic ..

How do you know how current the Google Earth image is?
GE image of my house, shows a car in the neighbors driveway that hasn't been there for 2.5+ years. Street view image is from 2014, but cant find anything saying when in overhead is from.

Maybe the former owners of your new place drive by and cant believe you are filling up that wide open yard with trees.  ;D

For $12 I will sell you a DF cutting with the same odds of getting blue skinned fruit as the EBAY one which is zero.

Couple of dragon fruit harvested from the yard this afternoon.
Clockwise, top center is Dark Star, American Beauty, Mega Red (from Pine Island about 2 years ago), Dark Star, Dark Star.
Also got 6 large white ones (had about 60 white blooms on three trellises open over the last three nights).

Same Dark Star (1lb 9.6oz)

Same Dark Star

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best dwarf banana varieties
« on: July 18, 2017, 07:16:17 AM »
I am planning on making a trip down to Excalibur tomorrow for an Atemoya and I figured while I'm there I should pick up a banana as well. I would ideally like a dwarf variety of some kind that can stay under 6-8 feet 10 absolute maximum. I would like something that makes an excellent fruit and preferably one that fruits as often per year as possible. I don't know much about banana plants but all my research points only to the dwarf cavendish variety and Excalibur has several dwarf options so any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sent you a PM.

Yes, congrats on the student.
40 years back when I was in school, I don't think I ever got a B either, I was more of a C or C+ type of student  :D

Wish I had bought another one or two more.

The apricot looked interesting

Only six pitombas and we know where two are.  Good luck on the new additions Dave

All of mine in the ground already

I got my pitomba at last year's sale.  ;)
This year I got 2 pitangatuba's, a large coffee plant (flowering w/fruit), a june plum and a Ice Cream Bean for my sister.

Didn't PIN release 'Cantaloupe' 'Orange Crush' and some other fruity sounding named jackfruit within the past couple years?
For the 2015 sale, PIN brought those 2 and two others (can't remember their names) up. Didn't bring any of them last year.

EDIT: Found the list from last year. Only time I can remember have varieties listed instead of just "assorted".
2016 jaks:
Black Gold
Cheena
Dang Rassini
Golden Nugget
J-30
Orange Crush
Thai 2
(Just because it's on the list, doesn't mean it actually made it onto the truck tho, and sometimes varieties not on the list come off the truck)

Not South Florida but Central Florida.
My NDM bloomed awhile back and currently has thumb size fruits.
Peach Cobbler did a small bloom about the same time as the NDM and it is now doing a heavy second bloom.
Lemon Zest is doing a heavy bloom.
Irwin is doing a small bloom, but it is still a small tree.
PPK is doing a fairly heavy bloom.
Coconut Creams, Mallika and Kent are all starting to show blooms.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are you enjoying mangos from your freezer?
« on: December 31, 2016, 03:59:05 PM »
When freezing I usually just cut them in small chunks and freeze, then just eat frozen.

This was passed along to me, but I have not tried it.
Peel a whole mango, press wooden chopsticks into the ends of the mango (one at each end, tho 2 at each end would stop it from possibly spinning later).
Place in the freezer.
Once frozen, use the chopsticks as handle and eat away at the mango (a mango Popsicle).

Wouldn't it be super-useful if we could come up with a chart listing all the Zill introductions of the last few years, starting with Lemon Zest and Sweet Tart, and include fruit information, tree information, ripening season for South Florida, and a rating of 1 to 5 stars?  You know, all-the-information-in-one-place kind of chart.

Well there is this thread.
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=1586.0
Which has this list.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 7HotDates.com -- The Finest Dates in the US
« on: December 09, 2016, 03:56:14 PM »
I search for a while and found another site for Dates and Figs u can also buy by the 15lb box.
https://nuts.com/wholesale/driedfruit/dates/

Or here; http://www.dateland.com/
Their prices do not include shipping.

Nuts.com just buys them from somebody else and then sells them to you from their warehouse. I would buy direct from the growers like 7hotdates or dateland.
