Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Goji Berry
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:36:16 AM »
If you have no luck locating a plant, go to a Asian market and purchase a package of dried berries (probably labeled Lycium or something instead of Goji), soak one in warm water for about a hour, remove the seeds and grow your own. I had no problem germinating the seeds from the dried ones from the Asian markets.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID help, Mamey Sapote or something else
« on: December 26, 2012, 06:31:48 PM »
Was over at a friends house a couple of months back, getting a tour of her plants & trees. I mentioned that I had a small unknown variety of Mamey Sapote that I started from a seed. She replied that she had one in a pot that I could have, but she could not remember the variety. It is about 3-4 foot, not grafted (as far as I can tell).
The thing is the leaves on the plant from her look different than the ones on my small seedling, don't know if it is because mine is so small, or if what I got is actually something else. And I don't know enough about what they should look like to know for sure.
First two pictures are of my Mamey Sapote seedling.

These 4 are of the larger one I was given (ignore the weevil damage).

Flash kinda washed this one out the leaves are not yellowish.

Any thoughts on if the larger one is a type of mamey sapote or does it look like something else.
Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Zands, I've had good luck with Ichiban eggplants this year (tasty and look exactly like your first picture) in containers made from 5 gallon buckets. Others that did good for me and taste good are Gretel (a white type), and Hansel. This fall I am giving Kermit and Fairy tale a try in addition to those mentioned.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / It's twins
« on: December 17, 2012, 05:09:00 PM »
A couple weeks back a friend gave me the last of her Leung Bang jackfruit from her tree and about 2 dozen seeds from it. I planted the seeds, all have sprouted and I noticed that one of them are twins. Just thought it was neat, twin sprouts from a single seed.

My potted Southern Blush is putting out buds.
I know a couple of my other mangoes are all revved up and just waiting for something to pull the trigger. Been out of town for a few days, and didn't have much daylight yesterday once I got home to take a good look around.

Noticed at just about every HD around here now has Miracle fruits for $29.95 (probably in a 1 gal or slightly larger pot).
Always get a kick wandering thru their citrus area and see their "cocktail citrus" they are selling in a hanging basket.

Havent seen any Jak or Mamey show up here yet.

Hi DM,

That's very clever of you, using PVC pipes to support your nanners 8) Here, we use a metal pole with a U, on top, as support for them nanners ;)

Steven, wish I could take the credit for the PVC support idea, but I got the info from here (about halfway down, section 4):
http://webebananas.com/culture.html

This way forms a tri-pod with the trunk, which is stable from all directions (good against winds and dogs chasing each other around the plants). But the wide stance does take up more room than a single pole.

Update to my top 3, my Blue Jave (Ice Cream) isn't a Blue Java, but a Pisang Awak.
And I now have a Raja Puri and Manzano flowering also (so I have a top 5).

Hi DurioLuva and Anders,
Check the 2nd row...4th pic :o Is it me or does that look like a pumpkin sprout?  :-\

The second picture on the 2nd row is lifted from Logee's website for their "TR Hovey" papaya.

If you didn't already, check with Going Bananas in Homestead (I know it's not Broward county, but it is close).

http://www.going-bananas.com/bananavarietycatalog.htm

I stopped by and got my Manzano (and others) from them a year ago. I also see Don at alot of the garden/plant shows around, so I would think they have a pretty good supply.

I can get you a pup from mine if you want to do that.

I've used the shovel & hammer method to separate pups.

http://www.bananas.org/f2/time-separate-pups-spring-1814.html#post12495

Heed the warning about being careful when hitting the shovel blade that the shovel handle doesn't knock you in the head.

My current top 3 from my yard.
Gran Nain

Namwa

Blue Java (Ice Cream)

In line waiting to join (or re-join) the list once one of those bunches gets ripe and eaten, Manzano, Raja Puri, Jamaican Red, Gros Michel, FHIA 17.

Here is my Jamaican Red from earlier this year. The one or two nights last winter that the temps dropped just under 30, didn't do much damage except for the upper most leaves.

The Red would be on my list of top three right now, except some wind storm came thru a month or so ago, and blew the biggest over and broke it just above ground level. It was a couple leaves away from pushing out a flower.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya...damage already done?
« on: October 02, 2012, 05:46:10 PM »
Am I correct to assume that the little piles of waxy stuff on the young papaya fruit is an indicator that a papaya fruit fly has already visited? Or is it something normal with papaya or some other insect?
First time growing papaya so the papaya fruit fly indicators are new to me.

I am guessing PFF. So, dispose of those fruits, and start bagging the new ones as soon as it looks like fruit?

Anything else work at keeping the PFF away?
Does spraying with something like Surround help?

Along the lines of what Oscar is talking about, there is a guy named Doug Suddaby, of the Sarasota Fruit and Nut Society, who gave a presentation last year on the construction of PVC frame frost houses.  They might be 8 or 10 feet tall I think.  You could contact the club and try to get Doug's contact info and get the plans.

Here is a link to the newsletter article about his presentation.

Puglvr1, I want my mango trees to look like yours, guess I will have to print out some of your pictures and have a talk with my trees one of these days.

This was a beautiful intact fruit which was going to be picked today. I've been checking it every day and it was perfect.
That's the way it usually is with my pineapples. The day I go out to pick it, I find that something has got to it the night before. Usually chews the heck out of it, or drags it away closer to cover for the feast. At least about 95% of the time I can recover the top and at least get another plant.

Epsoma make a product called "Bio-tone Starter Plus" that contains mycorrhizae.

I find it at Lowes (near me), but a lot of places carry Epsoma products.

My Purple Haze flower opened last night (Saturday). ;D
Here is last evening.

Here is this morning.

If all goes well and it sets fruit, should be ready in early Sept.
