Saw those at my HD last night, located in the garden center right near the register.

Also had a citrus one and a avocado one.

lol thanks for the info..

i just remembered I have a Tice tree planted out!

that makes 9 varieties.

(i've compared fruits and foliage from both trees, and looks like PIN has exact same one as the Green, labeled as Australian)

Was gonna say I thought you had a Tice  ;)

I bought papaya seeds from Aloha, never had all 10 from any package germinate, and had a few males in the ones that did.

Uau! The fruits appears to be big! 3 to 4 cm in diameter, maybe?

Grimal typically has larger fruit than Sabara (if properly grown)...I have not measured, but I think 3-4cm is close....

Paulista and coronata can be larger for sure.

the flavor of Grimal is unique...having a concord grape taste IMO.

My larger ones measure a little over 1 inch diameter.

Oh the wonders of having hair, I lost half mine when I was 18, so all I can do is the 'ol friar tuck lol.

Could be that Adam is just looking forward and if needed in the coming years he will be able to rock a wicked back to front comb over.  ;D

The small bush photo above is from my stash I scored last night. A Grimal, yellow, and door prize jabo.

I think the door prize jabo is a Red that Adam donated. I don't remember seeing any other jabos on the table.

Mature assassin bugs (wheel bug) will look like this.

The assassin bug nymph looks very similar to a stink bug nymph, but the stink bug nymphs tend to congregate in groups while the assassin bug nymphs tends to be solo.

How and should I get rid of/control these? Big legged plant bugs, leaf leg plant bugs, stink bugs?

Leaf footed stink bug.
Squashing them works.

Jeff, Papi and Small are two different cultivars I believe.

Got my answer from Pine Island Nursery.
It is from Fairchild, has been re-named to Mi Papi.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit variety "Small", any info on it?
« on: February 26, 2015, 03:47:34 PM »
At our fruit club meeting last night, I got to pick a plant off the door prize table. Only thing still there that interested me was a jackfruit (grafted), the white plastic wrap around tag at the base said "Small" as a variety, it also had a Pine Island jackfruit tag hanging from a branch.

I have never heard of a variety "Small" anybody know anything about this one? The name sounds like it would fit in with some of the other recent Fairchild releases like Hardy and Sweet.

Or possibly a Pine Island creation?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Peach Cobbler Mango, when is it ripe?
« on: February 18, 2015, 04:16:02 PM »
Doesnt attain much color.  Stays basically green, just lightens in color with an slight greenish yellow blush.

Of the grafted trees that have been sold and in growers' collection, i wish people would not start looking for production at this age.   The tree is less than 3 years old, please just let it grow and do its thing.  I have seen varying levels of production from the mother tree but that is not a good comparison.

greenish-yellow sounds good, since mine is in the front yard. Back near the fence separating the front from the back, not right near the street, I do have a pretty lightly traveled street anyway.

Only 2 more years of just growing to go..........

As I was wandering around one of the local whole sale club stores the other day, I noticed that they had packages of frozen guanabana pulp (also mango pulp) for making smoothies. Might have to go back and pick up a package to give this a try.

What is C9 cloth? Googling it seems to get me sportwear.

My mangoes are flowering and setting fruit, and are now too large to cover. I was really hoping for a good crop this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Snorting Cocoa?
« on: February 07, 2015, 09:04:24 AM »
In the article photo, looks like more of the cocoa is going around his nose and not up it (brown noser?). Sure seems like alot of wasted cocoa, I guess a rolled up dollar isn't chic enough. If you don't have a catapult device to deliver your cocoa powder to your nasal passages your not one of the "cool" people.

If it can be done with cocoa, bet you could also do it with espresso powder.

Think I need to make a cup of koko samoa.

Does Ensey's sell plants or only fruit?  I am getting that all too familiar itch to expand the collection (Not to be confused with the itch that plagues Sheehan)

Just fruit.

Dwarf??? you may have the wrong variety, they are known to have one of the largest leaves of any banana plant. My Rajapuri is as tall as Goldfinger.

Not sure on how tall a Goldinger gets, but my Raja Puri p-stem's are barely higher than my 6 foot fence when it fruits. Leaves are not extremely large either, kind of puny when compared to the leaves on my Jamaican Red.

Here is an old picture of the first flower (left side), 6 foot fence behind it.

When I comb/rake out either of my dogs (Siberian Husky and a Alaskan Malamute) I always throw the piles of dog hair out in the yard, under trees, where ever the wind blows it. Might work for adding nutrients as it breaks down (which it seems to do very, very slowly). But for insulation once it gets wet it gets compressed and becomes a mop.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Fertilizing 0-0-50
« on: January 17, 2015, 09:37:43 AM »

I read somewhere of a loose/guesstimate of something like this "This website advises applying one fistful of 0 - 0 - 50 fertilizer for every inch of trunk width measured one foot above the ground. " But, it sounds a bit too much IMHO...so I think I will put about 2 cups on my soon to be 7 year old trees...

For measurement's sake, I figure that birdseed is probably a close substitute for granular fertilizer. I measured a cupped handful of birdseed and it was between 1/3 and 1/2 a cup. A closed handful of birdseed was in the 1/4 cup range.

« on: January 16, 2015, 01:29:43 PM »

Is now the time to add 0-0-50 fertilizer to my blooming and almost blooming mango trees? Or should I wait till Feb.?

Also I called a local nursery and they carry High Yield 0-0-60...Can I sue this instead or is that completely different?

Thanks in advance...appreciate any tips and advise on how much to apply as well.

The 0-0-60 is Muriate of Potash.
It is not recommended for mangoes in this thread http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=13103.125
