These are my picks for South Florida.

Violete de Bordeaux is amazing in production and best tasting fig. Rich berry like delicious!
The fig is however very prone to rust. Fruit does not seem to be prone to splitting or spoiling.
Growing several container VDB for two years now.

LSU Purple very good less prone to rust good taste.

Kadota and White Genoa very good nice light green figs super flavor. Yes they will grow here in Florida!

Texas Blue Giant Bigger fig better taste than BT!

I have been experimenting with Panache but so far not impressed.
Also may have a few more to suggest soon we are growing.

Grow in containers if you have sandy soil

I am so glad to here from you about this topic. Thank you. So now I here  that in fact grafting is very common and has been going on for more than 20 years.

Once again, really appreciate your feedback and will touch base on ordering seed from you soon. Might as well give it try.

All the best,

Ethan,

I guess I will be visiting the lady who has a five foot tall and six foot wide hedge of it growing in the yard. Going to get some cuttings. I did read that it can be very invasive. Probably not that bad cause they say it does not like the cold. Too much water will kill it too. We shall see! Thanks to all of you for the I.D. and all the great info.
It's 1:22 am so it's off to bed we go. See ya all here soon.

Peace.
 :)

Wow, You guys are amazing! Really. So is it worth propagating them from seed or what? Now I'm going to eat the whole fruit and see if I can handle the tartness.

Now I found lots of great info from Julia F Morton. Never paid attention to this before. Seems like a popular fruit in Brazil.

Thanks again,

Pepe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Fruit is this? Never seen it before today
« on: February 24, 2013, 12:08:15 AM »
Found this growing in a ladies backyard in North Miami near the Oleta River. The lady says she eats them all the time and they are very tart but flavorfull. I tried a little of the juice and it's way to acidic for my taste. Any ideas? Naranjilla maybe a wild form?

I would love to give you more details but all I know is that the ones I had were one gal and I stepped up to three gal.
Never saw the mother tree.

Maybe one day I will be invited to Matts house and see for myself. LOL  ;)

These were the ones I sold and gave one away! See Picture:

Wish you could have seen them before they got transplanted. Tiny little things in one gal. Trees came from  P.I.

This tree was a chance seedling. The seed was from a large fruit that was purchased at a farmer's market maybe 15 years ago; but this tree inherited all of the large fruit genes as its fruit are much larger than the parent. Typically 1 1/2 -2 lbs with occasional fruit to around 2 1/2 lb. (40oz). (range 16-40 oz.) The trees is very productive and it makes fruit every year. It is self fertile.  The fruit quality is of very good, fairly typical of others though the fruit are often seedless, 0-3 , probably average 2 seeds/fruit, not many. Often able to make two Black Sapote Breads from each fruit. They make the best nut breads, the fruit is not overly wet. It has a nice dark brown-chocolate flesh color. The fruit stay light green when ripe; prettier than the black ones. Substitute black sapote for banana in any banana nut bread recipe.

Photo sent to me by Matt and used with his permission.
Not sure if it has been posted here before. I gave the last tree to my friend in Hollywood, Florida as a gift. Can't wait to eat the fruit in a few years.

Has anyone else had experience with this cultivar?

I tried several varieties of clones from so called Himalayan and some other Chinese ones. All duds in two years. Lots of growth and flowers no fruit. They were sold to me as self pollinating. I give up. The chill is the problem!

Now of course I could be wrong.  ::)

Mike it is growing rapidly in popularity. I spoke to some major nurseries in Homestead and they are also planting   thousands of seeds. Plenty of room for eveyone. Just making a point about how the market can quickly change as fads die out. This plant is so easy to grow anyone can do it?
Peace an best wishes.
