Come on Alexi, you are worried about people scratchig the OUTSIDE of a mamey?  That is the best way to check for ripeness and since you are not eating the outside, who cares.

By the way, I take it you don't eat much food??  Being that somebody's hands would have had to have touched anything you buy, whether at a grocery store, a farm, orchard, nursery, etc...

This thread is going to get very interesting! Please fasten your seat belts!!

That Viejo is almost as big as it gets.

Here is a photo with a link to its source: http://trec.ifas.ufl.edu/tfphotos/Viejo1.jpg

The tree is about 10 years old and kept around 11 feet tall with a width  of around 9-10 feet.
I never had the pleasure of tasting Pantin/Key West or any other except Magana. Pronounced Maganya. I don't want to change the language on the keyboard for one letter.
The flavor of Magana is fantastic but to me mamey is for drinking as a batido/Milk Shake.
Will be tasting Viejo later this weekend and will let you know. I will use a spoon first and describe it for you. After that it goes into the blender for a batido!

Glad you like the video.

Take care all!

Wow!
Thanks for the info. You are all awesome and I truly appreciate your comments and suggestions. These trees as I said are from the Dominican Republic and no more info is available. Time will tell if we have something decent. I will keep you all informed on the progress and will post some pics later this weekend.

Thanks to all of you.

Katie please keep the axe sharp in case I need to borrow it! LOL  ;D

I would like to start growing a few trees. Today I picked up two six foot tall beauties. They are seed grown and the seed originated from the Dominican Republic. My understanding is that they have perfect flowers but require cross pollination. Someone please elucidate me?

Thanks.

Jason "Pepe"

I will post some pictures later.  :D

I like Geopots and find them to provide excellent root air pruning and promote growth. I have used them and I sell them. One problem I discovered is that they seem to degrade after 18 months of continuous use! In other words they have fallen apart. I am starting to think our Florida Sun is way too intense! The bags are UV treated and still they get pretty beat up! Great for seasonal vegetables and then wash them out, dry and store for next season. In Florida they get a one year warranty that's it!

I love all my friends in Texas. Especially the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Those Dolphin Cheerleaders well they just don't look as pretty. Oh boy am I in BIG trouble now. Probably need to leave the state.  ;)

Strange true fact: 9 out of 10 Texans are color blind! LOL. Yikes I just keep looking for trouble!

Just kidding guys and gals....

Peace and love but blue really?

Looks like a really luscious fig......but who was the genius that named it Giant and Blue?

I agree on color not being very accurate. I do like Giant because it may not look so big in the video but it is a really big fig as it is huge and twice as big as  Brown Turkey and tastes a hell of lot better. As these trees mature the fruit get bigger and better. So calling it Giant is okay and if you grow one you will eventually agree. Blue yes that's weird!

Peace,

According to Gary Zill Lisa and other Atemoyas are best grafted on Cherimoya as this one is.
Amazing taste but yes shy bearing. Hand pollination. This lisa is one of five from my tree when it was three years old.
No fruit this year but have not really paid much attention to it. A real special treat when you get fruit.
Growing well looks great!

You mean you never heard about the Famous Cuban Catalina story? You need to hang out with Cubans from Miami. Man they got all kinds of stories!

See you soon.

Hey guys,

I guess Trying to be a comedian here just won't work. The stories, legends etc... JOKE.

Info on taste etc. Real world!

Okay I get it this is no place to be a wise guy!

Yikes! ;D

Hello folks,

I have heard that Wurtz really is a poor quality avocado. Does anyone know a little about it's origins? From what I hear it's not very tasty. Some say this  avocado is good in time of war. Makes a great weapon for a slingshot! ;D

Let me share with you some of my favorites and a bit of history:

Oro Negro is amazing black skinned with great texture and flavor. Good production.

Day is a little like a Hass but more pear shaped and olive drab skin. Good production and flavor.

Lula is to me a really nice avocado with a very sweet flavor. Anyone else detect that it is quite sweet?

Catalina is my absolutely favorite. What's not to like about it? "This amazing avocado floated across from Cuba, 60 years ago just before Fidel Castro took over the Island Nation. Wise Cubans jumped into the ocean to escape the Castro regime and tossed in some favorite scions for us to enjoy here in the States. We owe a great debt to poor old Don Miguel Cruz de la Santa Maria Espinoza Sanchez Alvarez Jr. who sadly was lost at sea. His amazing scion wood, wrapped in cellophane and aluminum foil floated over, washing a shore on Miami Beach. His shiny little package was miraculously picked up on the shoreline and immediately grafted and cared for by keen eyed avocado lovers in Miami." So be sure to think about this story every time you eat a Catalina! Well the story may be full of you know what, but the avocado is not! Catalina is the real deal and one hell of an awesome Avocado!

Monroe is another great avocado and related to Oro Negro. "Legend has it that Oro Negro was found in Homestead, Florida on a cool dark rainy night after a meteor crashed into an abandoned papaya plantation." It is from out of this world but not quite as tasty or nearly as huge as my Cuban favorite Catalina.

Can you smell the BS yet? Well okay just trying to have a little fun. After all I am a Cuban and we like to stir things up from time to time!

Russell is a real dandy looking long necked avocado that chefs in particular like for preparing fancy salads. You can get little round cuts from the neck and other shapes as well for presentation on a plate. "You can also start your car in an emergency by sticking the long end of the neck into the gas tank and squeezing really hard. Awesome biofuel"

Thank you gents you are absolutely on the ball.

I have been using Hormidin 3 on cuttings with coco coir and a plastic tent with a few holes in it. Try it if you don't have room in the mist house. Patience but good results in spring and summer.

Peace

The best of this entire thread is no longer the newly found Jack Fruit cultivar. No the best part is that "we are taking a step back so as to keep the cat pee out of the sandbox" I love that metaphor. That is a metaphor right? Really you had me laughing my ass off!!

Really guys this is better than watching TV. Gosh darn it's better than You Tube!

No disrespect to anyone here but I agree with Tropic Dude. Yes the ideal situation would be to wait 10 years to evaluate the tree for production, consistency, disease resistance and it might even provide the next set of winning lotto numbers. After a shorter period much can be learned and going forward with naming and grafting is okay by me. After all only the strong survive and if that DS 2 is not all it's supposed to be it will just fade away! What harm is done?

Peace everyone and don't forget to stock up on dynamite so you can blow up bad Jacks.
