The fruit looks good! Can you tell us the variety? Thanks!

It must be the relatively warm temperatures here in So. Cal.  It would be about 95 degrees in Temple City on this Thanksgiving Day.
My air layered longan tree in pot pushed out new branches, but the ones that are in the ground did not.
My potted mango trees also have new grow of large leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When is sugar apple seeds a dud?
« on: November 15, 2017, 09:08:16 PM »
The best way to sprout sugar apple seeds is damp potting soil in full son. The paper towel methods only good for summertime as we are going into cooler months of the year and the success rate will be lower.
I have attached a picture of VSA seedlings. Took picture yesterday and 3 weeks to sprout. I also have to deal with squirrels digging in containers and up root everything  to stash their acorns.

Hi Richard,

I totally agreed with you, but the VSA that I got from you  3 weeks ago have not sprouted yet...hopefully soon.  As for the squirrels digging in containers, I use a wire cage to cover it up.

Miracle,
I love your your trellis layout! So effector, yet economical! :) I just made one myself.

I'm going to add some supplemental lighting and heat. Prehaps a reptile heat lamp? I haven't been able to get df to flower or even grow much inside the greenhouse. I suspect it doesn't like filtered sunlight, since my greenhouse has glass that reduces uv. It grows nicely outside in direct sunlight and hot weather. I want to grow it successfully this time. I'm so sick of nasty store-bought df. I am growing "Red Zamorano" and "Purple Haze". Fingers crossed!
Thanks for posting!

Thanks, sildanani
Your trellis is very nice too.  Good luck with your df
FYI my white df will flowers two crops per year, one in June and one in late August. Red df will flowers three crops: late March,  June and late August.

Wow, it's a miracle alright.  How do you get DF to fruit so many time per year?

thanks!

I just went to Aldi and pick up 10 Keitt Mangos for 39 Cents each to try.  They are small, but tasted good.
I chose one intentionally soft to try, and the seed already sprouted with root.  I will plant the seed tomorrow.

Thanks Rodney!

You should graft instead of asking for seed mustang as it'll take a few years to fruit and it might not be true to the mother tree.

Thanks for the advice, but I am fairly new to growing fruit trees.  I did some airlayers, but never grafted any...not hard to learn.

Sure. Let's do that but only .....the seeds germinate....:)

I am very sure that we will have some trees since the seeds are very fresh.  I can predict that your trees will fruit in about 2 years(from Richard on Youtube), whereas mind will hopefully in 2 1/2 years.  Good Luck!

Hi Dragon,

I think you have the advantage of how well they grow since San Diego and VN climate are more similar than that of Los Angeles area.
Anyhow, We should keep an update on the trees progress from time to time.

Just curious if your seeds float when you soak them? My are floating right now. Will it affect the seed germination? I am kind of worry right now because all of them floating above water.

Don't worry, all of my seeds are floating right now.  After a day or two, they will sink to the bottom because they are all soak with water.  Do the wet paper towel method or put them in potting soil to germinate.
I did the same thing for the sugar apple seeds that I bought on Ebay three weeks ago, and all 10 seeds germinated within about two weeks.

I also got the VSA seeds today.  Now they are in a glass jar with pussy willow water...for at least 24 hours before planting them in potting soil.
I can't wait to eat the fruits...will remind me of my childhood in Vietnam.  Thank You Richard!

Hi Coconut,

Did you sent seeds to Nathan in Bakersfield, California about two years ago? I bought the Soursop seedling from him, and don't know the variety.  I really appreciated if you reply.  Thanks!

I have not tasted the Red Sugar Apple, so I could compared the taste between them.  However, I really like the Vietnamese Sugar Apples which are very sweet and flavorful.  I would like to grow this tree in the near future.

It looks like the Sugar Apple that I ate when I was a kid in Vietnam.  Since there are a lot of Vietnamese in Rosemead, Calif., I think it could be the Vietnamese Sugar Apple variety. Just my thought.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I already have two big longan trees in the ground, don't know what the variety it is, but the fruit tasted great.  I would like to have any of the five varieties' seeds listed here if anyone offering to sell.

Hi Coconut,

Are you going to offer the seeds by any chance to forum members after you finished with that delicious fruit.  I will be interested to have some of the seeds.  Thanks and Happy New Year!
