I have some promising new recruits. One 25 ft papaya is ready to be chopped but it is a skybury red.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Winter abius
« on: July 13, 2013, 02:27:55 AM »
I received a couple of abius from a tree that produces mainly winter fruit of huge size with just a single seed. It is a seedling of unknown origin and the fruit are very good quality. The smaller of these 2 is over 1kg and the larger is almost 3lbs.It is hard to balance them in one hand.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit ID experts needed
« on: June 25, 2013, 05:23:52 AM »

A friend who is a dragonfruit enthusiast with dozens of cultivars, hybrids and species is baffled by pictures of a supposedly wild species from Ecuador.Clearly there is a resemblance to the common small yellow and even the domestic big yellow hybrids but is seeking a species name.He can't even be sure which genus it belongs to.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rambo of Rambutans
« on: June 07, 2013, 03:57:03 AM »

These rambutans are whoppers with some to 9cm.I can't figure out the variety but they look like big binjai, rongrien and jitlee all mixed. They taste great and little testa sticks to the flesh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A fist ful of rambai (B.motleyana)
« on: June 07, 2013, 03:38:40 AM »

Last year I showed a spherical rambai but these egg shaped ones are the best I have ever tried with sweet passionfruit and longkong flavors with citrus overtones. They are better than others in the genus with good Burmese grapes and tampoi also being respectable and I suppose angled tampoi is next in line.Pale Burmese grapes look similar but can be identified by their purple flesh and purple covered seeds as apposed to white flesh and brown seeds in Rambai.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What type of melon is this?
« on: May 24, 2013, 10:43:45 PM »

The papaya is a skybury red which is one of the finest and most flavorsome reds. The yellow melon is known locally as a mango melon and it appears a bit like a honeydew but has sweeter orange flesh and a sweet pungent aroma. It is the 6.5lb toad skinned melon in front I am curious about. It is very sweet, white fleshed and the seller has no information on what it is called or where it came from.Considering the great taste it should be everywhere.
I'll post again when it gets cut.

African yellow flavicarpa is going crazy on my fence pumping out the fruit and the first will be ripe soon.

The Panama gold planted at the same time is also a 'sweet elite' and it is rising to the challenge. Grown in the same conditions I'll soon be able to rationally compare these 2 basic varieties.

While the camera is in hand here is my Russell's sweet yellow mangosteen to show I haven't killed it.I need to get a male and have one in the pipeline.

Oh yeah the broad leafed papayas' fruit are at least a couple of lbs each and must ripen soon and I'll be able to report on fruit quality.

I sent a few people Misty Gem (P.edulis) seeds in the past. The attachment shows the methodology for assessing passionfruit types for commercial production. There are dozens of other varieties of course but these are some of the big guns for sub tropical cultivation. None can really compete with the top flavicarpas for high brix and out of hand 'pleasantness'.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf Macadamia
« on: May 11, 2013, 10:41:20 PM »
I went to the Mother's Day garden show at the racecourse at the end of my street today and forgot my camera. There were a lot of good trees on offer but I only bought one.

Dwarf macadamias should be much more popular and cheap as they are precocious bearers and great for pot culture. Seedlings stay small and produce many fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trees skating on thin ice
« on: May 10, 2013, 08:52:19 PM »

My yellow jabos have been enjoying the good life next to the sidewalk. The rain chased me inside last weekend when I approached them with a saw and now they have flowers. They have had many get outa jail miracles but this crop better be superb or its mulch patrol. The fruit are just not good enough for them to get a starting spot in the front yard fruit team.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ross rules in my yard
« on: May 10, 2013, 05:53:36 PM »

My marcotted ross has been in the ground for less than 2 years and is 10 feet high with flower buds and small fruit. My nearby grafted canistel is 3 years old and only 3 feet being a real ass dragger.

I sure hope hope it is the giant fruited ross and not the standard.

As the southern hemisphere heads into Winter the durians, rambutans, mangoes (last keitts abd brooks around but sam ru du will continue),matisia, santols and artocarpus are fading or are outa season now in my area. The atemoyas and rollinias are getting common, black sapotes and canistels are ramping up.Mangosteens are turning up again after having a little holiday and they seem to have 3 seasons a year but this is mostly due to there being a few varieties. The ones in the picture are a big supersweet type that always fruit at this time of the year.

Better than a kwai muk, marang, pedalai or lakoocha? You bet it is.Smokey apricot, chempadak, with a hint of fruity caramel.

It is a great fruit alright, with not latex or aftertaste and can be eaten quickly.Kids love them and oddly there is little smell.Keladangs sure are a classy fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Feast your eyes on late Durians
« on: April 27, 2013, 11:04:55 PM »

D10 was delicious this afternoon.

The locules of the montong that the striped possum didn't eat were amazing.Way better than the D10.The D10 in the middle and Gan Yeow on the right can be saved for tomorrow. The orchard where these durians were grown is at 1300ft altitude and only just frost free. The fruit ripen in late autumn right up until the start of winter.

Spanning almost 2000 miles along the Australian east coast the Illawarra flame trees have seasonal blazing red floral displays when all the leaves are dropped. This most stunning of trees also has edible seeds that were roasted and appreciated by the aboriginal people. This food source has almost been forgotten and the tree dominated street plantings in many towns.

These pix don't do it justice.

So what do those edible seeds look like? See for yourself in that handsome paw below some park seeds picked up yesterday.

Jimmy Barnes with Cold chisel even sang a song called Flame Trees but not everyone can understand the scottish/australian drawl.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Casabanana or Sicana
« on: April 11, 2013, 03:27:09 AM »

I am growing cassabanana for the first time and the vine went bezerk as soon as it hit the dirt.It has small fruit setting now.I have seen references with varying descriptions of the eating qualities of ripe fruit and usefulness raw as a vegie.Does anyone have experience with this species and can enlihten me on ythe edible quality of the fruit?

This pedalai selection is the pride of the rare fruit council but I am yet to try it.People speak very highly of it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2nd season for Inga edulis
« on: April 05, 2013, 04:18:48 AM »

I picked up an Inga edulis fruit today from a batch that were all about 3.5ft,straight and thick.I can tell they will be very fleshy and they are different from the monster type I showed about six months ago.It seems some trees either have a second season or fruit about 6 months out of sinc with the rest.

Stay tuned for the grand opening tomorrow and I suspect a high flesh yeild will be revealed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lansium Lover
« on: March 22, 2013, 05:29:11 AM »

People know longkong (dokong) pretty well and langsat is familiar to many folk as well.Kokosan is not worth knowing but what about the other 2.....duku and duku-langsat? Well here they are and they are delicious. These are only modest sized duku and some types get pretty big. They have thick skin and very sweet flesh.Duku-langsat looks kinda like a big langsat with no skin latex and a flavor on par with longkong but there are seeds.

See the difference now?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Early Matisia
« on: March 11, 2013, 03:45:31 AM »

The first matisias of the season are a small nippled type. When the cap shrinks to reveal a paler ring that means they are ripe.

Ok they ready to eat. This type tastes rather like 40% pumpkin,30% papaya and the rest its own taste with mango texture. In form it is not that far removed from santol.Stay tuned as the ass-kickin' types should be around soon.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / R9 Rambutan
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:12:46 AM »

R9 is a big rambutan that has very sweet flesh and only a little bit of seed coat sticks to the flesh. They are very popular.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Z2 Abiu and a rogue seedling's fruit
« on: March 08, 2013, 01:51:29 AM »

These two Z2 fruits are well over a pound are known to be one of the best and biggest types.I found these beauties in the market.

An acquaintence said he had a seedling of unknown parentage that has fruit way larger ad tastier than Z2.He brought me 2 of his when I told him to prove it.

He was right about size as can be seen in these ones either side of the Z2's.They are near perfect spheres of quite unitform color and no green around the stem attachment area.I can't identify what they are closest to.When I eat them the taste test will be revealing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2 Top Santol varieties
« on: March 08, 2013, 01:42:19 AM »

These 2 varieties of santol are considered the best locally and are called Manila and Bangkok. The both have smaller seeds, thinner rind, more useable flesh and a better taste than most of the common ones around. They are reputedly both self fertile.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / luang durian and passionfruit today
« on: March 05, 2013, 03:12:26 AM »

Luang durians are one of the best varieties and every bit as good as montong. This one will be perfect tomorrow.

I also acquired sweet yellow and red passionfruit today and the season never ends. There seems to be numerous varieties with subtle differences in color, shape, flavor and seasonality.I wonder what passionfruit and durian fruit salad would taste like?
