Tropical Fruit Discussion / R134 VS R156
« on: March 01, 2013, 01:48:07 AM »

Around the world only about 8 rambutan varieties (of over 200) are usually recommended for commercial cultivation and come out on top with compartive assessments. These are R9,R134,R156yellow,R162,R167,rongrien,jit lee and binjai.
Above is R134 and the yellow R156.R156 has crisper and thicker flesh and R134 is sweeter and more complex in taste. In the above sample R134 was the clear winner in the taste stakes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rambutans with poor appearance
« on: February 22, 2013, 01:46:03 AM »

Picked only 3 days earlier these rambutans have blackened hairs and look unappealing due to rough storage and handling. It hardly looks like one of the classic reds.R134 is the first of the season and a premier variety with little testa clinging to flesh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mobolo thin flesh and great taste
« on: February 22, 2013, 01:35:45 AM »

The first mobolos of the season is a red round type with a fabulous pasty pineapple flavor.Unfortunately the seeds take up a large proportion of the fruit, especially the smaller fruit. In spite of this it is a favored variety of the local phillipino population.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling Abiu Trees
« on: February 09, 2013, 07:20:03 PM »

Lately I have had quite a few abiu from seedling trees and many have been great and different from their parent. In the picture at the top is a 1.6lb fruit from a Z4 seedling that was of terrific quality with a single seed. The lower fruit is a 1.4lb E4 abiu.It is clear that seedling abius are well worth growing and fruit can turn out as good as named cultivar parents.I have also heard that poor quality offspring can result but it seems to be only a small proportion from good quality parents. There seems to be alot of potential to breed new varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit Berried Treasure
« on: February 09, 2013, 06:53:52 PM »
Rare fruit collector and breeder Ron Berry has sadly passed away but a very high quality jackfruit he bred may ensure his name lives on in fruit circles.Only a few people have as yet got offspring of his prized tree but it is raising eyebrows.

It is a large low latex fruit around 8kg to 20kg, more elongated than most jacks with rough skin that has small sharp tubicles. The flesh is orange/yellow/pink and luscious with bery large bulbs and seeds.Amber and Berry are the 2 varieties most eagerly sought by fruit growers in Queensland.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pearl is a daughter of Keitt
« on: February 08, 2013, 05:31:05 AM »
Pearl is a variety of mango I have noticed turning up in the markets lately.I am told it is a daughter of Keitt and it has a similar taste. The stall holder at the market today told me it is under PBR and is only on a few farms at the moment.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Top marang, lakoocha and kwai muk
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:49:29 AM »

This is a top quality lakoocha and it has a nice flavor.

The kwai muk here is a very good one and the juice is bright red.

This marang is a good quality commercial type with lots of nice tasting flesh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bali Salak Salacca zalacca amboina
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:30:28 AM »

There are quite a few varieties of lowland bali salaks and this is one of the best. They might not quite mix it with the upland gula pasir but they come close. The ones I have been eating today are very large with a nice apple/pineapple flavor and crispy flesh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mimusops maxima taste a bit like canistel.
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:24:27 AM »

I ate some Mimusops maxima today and they were quite nice. The taste is a bit like light fluffy canistel but with flesh less is less generous amounts.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trees suffering in hot weather
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:28:05 PM »
Today I saw large durian trees, lansiums, mangosteens dropping leaves and being scorched by excessive heat and UV in spite of the humidity being very high and there being ample moisture in the soil.

If max temps don't get below 35c soon and the UV index doesn't start dropping from 15/16 (10 = extreme rating) there could be casualties in my yard.

This kan yeow durian is getting a roasting.

Mangosteen foliage is showing signs of damage.

If the humidity was very low as well then tree damage would be far more severe.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Three seasons and R2E2 Mangoes
« on: February 01, 2013, 01:48:38 AM »

I picked up an R2E2 today that was right on 4lbs.

3 seasons or sam ru du is one of my favorite types of mangoes and it has the longest fruiting season.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Honey Gold Mango Raising its Profile
« on: January 15, 2013, 07:51:47 AM »

Honey gold is a mango starting to appear in the supermarkets more often in my neck of the woods and is taking some market share from KP.It has good skin color, is sweet and tasty but has pale flesh.Above it is between a nam dok mai and a fairly colorles KP.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Durians overheated and suffering lack of water
« on: December 28, 2012, 04:16:55 PM »

The same fellow with the chempedaks who lives around the corner from me has a great collection of fruit fruit trees in a small backyard with concrete paths winding through them.20 to 30 year old rambutans, mangosteens, chempedak, duku.longkong, maprang, abiu and durians trees and many more fill his block and it doesn't seem crowded under the 15 to 20 ft canopy.
There has been a record low 8 inches of rain in 6 months and the trees are stressed but responding with multiple flowering and excess fruiting.Temperatures have also been high with 25 to 34c every day lately. Many fruit and flowers fall off but clusters of survivors are hanging in there..

The durians are gumpun, luang, kan yeow,montong,D103,D99 and D102 and all are responding in a similar way with leaf loss and multiple flowering. They have been on easy street for many years.

I went to Rusty's Market today and picked up some canistels that look like ross sapotes. They are 1.7lbs each and the seller said they are not a ross and the best tasting canistel he has ever tried.Could they really be ross sapotes?

I grabbed a couple of small red mangoes for only 60c/lb.They were labelled florida reds and I suspect they'll be very turpsy.I think I know what they are but the Florida mango brains trust will know for sure.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Twisted Chempedak
« on: December 26, 2012, 08:21:41 PM »
While the leopard skinned chempa is a fantastics fruit its twisted sister is better in my opinion. The large bulbs have thick, delicious yellow flesh and they are up tp 18lbs.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / yellow Burmese Grapes (B.ramiflora) in closeup
« on: December 20, 2012, 06:06:27 PM »

I showed yellow burmese grapes before but here is a close-up so they are easy to identify.Regardless of skin color the seeds have a purple film over them. This variety is the same size as small rambais and is almost as good in quality. You eat them like jaboticaba squeezing out of the skin and swallowing flesh and seeds together.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Asian Eggplants
« on: December 14, 2012, 05:52:27 AM »
http://www.plantnames.unimelb.edu.au/new/Sorting/CATALOGUE/Pt2-Asian-eggplants.html#Solanum-torvum

The above link shows a selection of asian eggplant varieties. There are loads of types and they are used differently from the large soft fruiting annual types.

I like small crunchy types in stir fries and many dishes.

This tiny pea sized solanum referred to as an eggplant seems closer to a small highly flavoured tomato. It is used to flavor many asian dishes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Popular Early Season Lychees
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:35:29 AM »

The 4 preferred early season lychee varieties in my district are pictured.Fai zee siu is at the front, tai so mauritius is on the left, kwai mai pink is on the right and tai so Australian selection is at the rear.Mauritius and Australian tai so are very similar and taste the same.Mauritius is a little smaller, redder and has fewer chicken tongue seeds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this kola?
« on: December 09, 2012, 04:05:51 AM »

A friend found a tree in a suburban park today with dry old pods under it.Is it a kola and are the purple seeds (once peeled) inside still viable?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Edible Australian Natives
« on: December 08, 2012, 08:59:26 PM »

These 2 local native fruits in my area are increasingly being grown and appreciated in yards and there are even some small commercial growing enterprises. There are many in both genera with potential. Not many botanists could pick both species.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Leopard Skin Chempadak
« on: December 08, 2012, 08:37:42 PM »
A friend who is a retired govt tropical fruit researcher and grower advisor dropped off one his prized prized rag free leopard skin chempadaks. What a great taste and rag and flesh is the same and fruit are quite small. This is what he and I rank as the no. 2 variety in Australia and there are many.He also has the number one.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / FAI ZEE SIU -Concubine Laughing
« on: December 07, 2012, 01:54:20 AM »

But what about the taste? Better than the kwai mai pinks and mauritius I ate today by a long way. What a champion fruit fai zee siu is with size, small seeds and a wonderful taste.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / E4 ABIU
« on: November 26, 2012, 04:22:50 AM »

I am told by growers that my E4 abiu is one of the last fruiting adult trees of this type left after cyclonic wipeout of where they were mostly grown.I have given budwood to a few growers who say they prefer to eat this type to their commercial Z4's,as well as grays and Z2's.They have mango leaves that hang, long nippled fruit and perhaps taste the best of all types. They are not firm like some so may not be as commercial as some types.
It has been a dry year and mine have not produced as well as they should.I see bug bites on the babes and I need heaps to survive over trhe wet season.Hopefully I can show the mature fruit and it will be obvious that they are an aberrant abiu.

Some time ago I promised good forum friend, tropical66 (Faezal) that I would help him get sweet Eugenias and jaboticabas in addition to a few other good 'new world' fruit seeds. These are the species that are not in abundanve here and I have been unable to satisfy his request very well.If anyone can help me get some of these to him I will handsomely reward them with a good selection of Australian seeds.I have a good variety at my fingertips right now but soon I will have access to a rich bounty of ood tropical fruit seeds.

Thanks
Mike T
