Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lansium parasiticum Aka duku or langsat
« on: December 05, 2017, 07:06:13 AM »
Oscar you seem to be correct. I looked at this a couple of years ago and the medium confidence only on the plant list and comments I was seeing and the original paper not being fully embraced made me doubt the new name. Some were even listing L.parasiticum as a synonym rather than the reverse. See the examples below. I take it all back.

The name Lansium parasiticum (Osbeck) K.C.Sahni & Bennet has been proposed for this species. It has not been universally accepted yet (2014), so we are maintaining the name Lansium domesticum for the time being

Just to avoid confusion L. domesticum is a very old composite species with numerous older synonyms. The species name L.parasiticum is a fairly recent proposed name that hasn't been accepted as yet and it is shaping up as if it wont. Duku, lansone. langsat, duku-langsat ,kokosan, longkong and all their respective varieties are considered a ingle species and the 2 sub species in the literature are probably not genuine.

They seem to grow really well in 4000mm/yr rain and some varieties like cool weather less than others.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dont be a Stupid Plucker
« on: December 02, 2017, 09:57:16 PM »
I often swing a bit on the ladder and hang on thin branches to pick fruit. I have nearly come to grief a few times. A plucker I have is not so good and I have worn mangoes and sapodillas a few times. Today I decided to pluck a pomelo from tree which was hanging about 8 feet from the ground. Here is the tree and offending fruit - well one of them at least when they were smaller.

I used to play basketball and fancy my leaping ability so decided to jump up and get it. I went base over apex with the 11 lb fruit landing on my head and shoulder and one of two more fruit jarred off landing on me as well. Thankfully they are spongy and I wasn't hurt. Mind you if a durian, coconut or jackfruit landed on you, you could be compromised. I will be a little more careful in future.
I am sure we all have stories of picking and dropping fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ilama seedlings dying.

GA3 can make seedlings not only elongated but more vulnerable to becoming a casualty from other causes.Damping off and dying back like that is nearly always due to soil fungus. Whether phosphonate or Alliette will help I don't know but clean premium potting mix to start the seedlings out is important.

A proper pinks mammoth, Paxton prolific or Hillary white or even Maroochy gold is what you need to get going over there. PP (KJ Pinks) in particular would be a winner.

My E.matossi is 1m high and 1.2 wide after maybe 5 or 6 years and it flowers nicely. It still hasn't set a fruit.

The minimum tolerable temperature for breadfruit published in Australia in the 1980's was 8c for winter minimums but it is really 3c or 4c and In Australia on the east coast it correlated to about 18.5 latitude. Its cold tolerance is about the same as mangosteen and many commercial varieties of durian.

Jim wests Ecuador yellow - the big round one flowers within 2 years from germination. Hopefully fruit will set in the 3rd year.

Is it on Mt Leseur the home of D.macrantha?

On young trees when they have their first flowers, not many set.

Escarlate is the fastest and less than 3 years.

Depends on the variety of E.uniflora and really ripe brazil orange is good compared to the darks and standards I have tried and I am optimistic about my Lolita.I am too hot for corg and chopped the fruitless trees down.

140
I haven't tried the fruit yet but online reports are positive. The fruits are really red.

The plant in the pot has a flower after being a seed a little over a year ago. I found the seeds germinated within a few weeks and the plants grow vigorously whether in the pot of the ground. They stay short and have multiple branches. The ones I planted in the yard thrive on neglect and don't need much water.

142
They have exceeded expectations and have a firmer texture than most congenors.I am a tough critic with Eugenias and I would only place E.lutescens ahead of it from all the species I have tried.

143
Great stuff Oscar and it is good to hear that z4 has quality fruit.I have a couple of seedlings. I think escarlate is a fair bit sweeter than sabara and red hybrid is on par in the sweetness stakes.I am very lucky to have had all 5 of those even though I gave away all the oblongatas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia pyriformis x lutescens first tasting
« on: November 17, 2017, 03:40:30 PM »
I was told that this is the finest Eugenia fruit for eating out of hand and 2 of my 3 small trees flowered and fruited.

Eugenia pitanga I found no better than E.uniflora.A little bland and a little resinous.

The new jabs for me escarlettte and red hybrid are great and have more than met expectations.

I have a E.lutescens and tries the solitary fruit and it was great and almost apricot like. The verdict on E.pyriformis x lutescens is that the fruit do not live up to expectations and are more sour than sweet , they have a little bit of a resinous aftertaste and the flavour is not really rich and fruity. Not as good as pitangatuba.Perhaps being a hybrid mine has thrown too much to pyriformis and they are not all like this.

They are very productive in a warm climate and the picture doesn't show how big they really are.

There are much drier areas and even deserts closer to the US border. The trees drop lots of leaves in the dry season.

Raul has great stuff and is a good guy. I tried everything with the seeds to get good germination rates fron scraping them, refrigerating them and all concentrations of gibberellic acid. My 4 trees have fruit setting now but back to seeds.

Seeds from this red genova fruit were planted fresh and nearly all popped up without anything special being done. It did take over 6 months and stirring the soil and disturbing them seems to spring them into action.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: garcinia dulcis seeds available
« on: November 16, 2017, 06:03:44 AM »
Xanthochymus varies from very sour to sour/sweet and are large and often have a point and dulcis varies from sweet to sour/sweet and are a bit smaller. The fruit in the pic there looks more like dulcis. The trees are different. I am still not sure if the Russell sweet is a divergent form of dulcis.

I am yet to figure out what cochinchinensis in south America really is.
Good luck with them Josh they look nice.

Starling you need to go to Mt Lewis some time and see the bryophyte profusions there with amazing leafy liverworts and filmy ferns. The mosses are amazing with Dawsonias of epic proportions. There are a lot of tassell ferns as well and people have been finding blue ones lately.
Fitzalania is a tropical lowland species that peters out in southern queensland but is common around here. You can only easily identify it when it fruit. The triangle butterflies use it as a caterpillar host and no doubt some Papillionids outside its natural range wiould be able to use it.

Starapples and juicy pearls do fine in clay soils. Juicy pearls fruit at 3 years old and the tree is smaller than starapples. The juicy pearl has a different shape and size from those that Oscar has by the look of it even if they are the same species and probably subspecies. I am sure they graft onto each well as they are obviously closely related.
