C'mon fruitlover  we pay the pollies truffles and we get pigs.Borneo is just a hangover from the peninsula and part of 'sunda'.Have a look at that definitive Am. Journ. of Bot. 2009 paper and follow the references and all will be revealed.

Wow Soren you are a real annonaceae enthusiast.Local M.leichhardtii and M.uhri are whopping rainforest vines that are also butterfly food plants.I have never even heard of the aboriginal people consuming the fruit.

That is kinda true fruitlover but the initial statement and logic had a few holes and the figures were unsupportive so it was open for bending towards my opinion. It would be interesting to look at a few scientific papers and resolve and the origin and diversity question.

I have spoken to Alan Carle on the phone but don't know him personally in spite of him being only 100km up the road.I cannot explain why his truth and experience is different from mine.My repeated experiences were self assessed and the experience of his day involves working, heavy consumption and potentially multiple appraising 'smellees'.It would be interesting to know how much fruit the party consumed.

Fruitlover the supermarkets and roadside markets selling sala usually are flogging sala moh and sala sane'.While they can look similar to the real deal, with loose skin and even a bit of a point these pretenders are higher in acid.i would put them on par with the lowland bali 'pineapple core' types.

Soren I ate a fair bit and it made no difference. There was big a park tree I found just before mine fruited that gave lots of fruit but gave the same result. Some folk are particularly 'aromatic' and maybe a few pound of pure flesh could take theedge off it.My naive optimism has been replaced by disillusionment on the kepel front.

Tropicdude you are right and mango trees are on every street and in every yard.I kinda forgot the point of the discussion.Even if the species was domesticated in northern thailand, the malay peninsula is the centre of diversity and thailand has more consumption per capita......so what.It all proabaly happened at the same time in India and they are just as important there. They are the national fruit of the phillipines also and important all over the tropics. There can't be too many fruits as important or enjoyed in the world.

What a fantastic looking atemoya.Tropic sun is like a smaller more perfectly shaped version of it.Pinks mammoth is more irregular than the atemoyas pictured being less sugar apple like it is also smoother. Some pinks mammoth fruit, from particular lineages are also pretty big.My local farmers market called Rusty's sometimes has 5 or 6 pounders.Last year a whopper was on display that was bigger than a soccer ball and looked double the size of the usual prize specimens.

BMc You only have to hold off the farmer and guard dogs for 30 seconds while I secure the specimens and make my getaway.

I mention lychees again and say more in the favourite tropical fruit thread but the conversation went in another direction.I have not tried sweetheart but know some enthusiasts talk about it in hushed tones of respect.Fai zee siu is good alright and you'd be spitting out bosworth in horror if you ate a FZS first.

Fruitlovers that was a great return of serve. Most scientific journals in recent times advise that the Malay peninsula is the centre of diversity for the genus.Indica is where it gets more difficult but the American Journal of Botany 2009 and in particular Prakart Sawangchote can shed some light on the matter.I'll let it go there.A compelling case may be mounted either way I think but I'll stick with gut feeling that the best mangoes come from thailand..

If you're loaded with clays, mulch and humus and have a colloidal disneyland and it is applied way beyond the dripline it is pretty forgiving.

Fruitlovers you got me there and the per capita favour to thailand may be more like 1.5 x that of India. It was not this that I was referring to because it modern. As 17 mangiferas occur in thailand it is the centre of diversity.Mangifera paleoindica traces have been identified in northern thailand and it is accepted that the root of M.indica is there.Intraspecific genetic diversity is probably the clincher but the origin of the domestic mango could have been in an arc that stretch right across the two.

Volume my be a truer indicator and India produces 9x more for 20 x more people so it still is less than half as popular per capita than Thailand.

Fruitlover I am surprised that India has 20x more people than Thailand and has an area under mangoes 6 to 7 times greater.Does that mean mangoes are 3 x less popular in India than in their spiritual home?

I have a great idea.If BMc drives 500 miles north and I drive 500 miles south we could meet at the farm that has erdon lee.If we hurdle the fence together an he distracts the guard dogs I could snatch a few snippets and make my escape.Later we could meet up and share the bounty.

There were 18 inches when put in the ground and maybe the seedlings were then 2 years old and from 2 sources. The flesh is not unpleasant and I would describe it as exceptionally average but scant.

BMc that is outrageous and I refused to even give the seedlings away because I didn't want to inflict disappointment on others..To think I put them on a fast development track and lavished the finest fertilsers and nutrients on them and they turned on me at fruiting time.I don't think there ever been a greater disparity between reality and the descriptions of a fruits' quality.

I had 3 of them and the first to fruit took 2.5 years and the final 3.5.They didn't make me smell good, didn't have much or nice flesh and were turning into disappointing giants. They had to go when the carpet of seedlings underneath also became a hassle.

6596
Good shot fruitlovers and it wasn't just an airswing. The growers and industry have known for decades they should be growing other varieties and some planted big areas of other types.Because kent, keitt, brooks, palmer and a few others flopped so badly as blind freddie could have seen, it was back to KP.New local types,calypso,r2e2 have been planted and are doing alright.Just a few with insight planted nam dok mai,ok rung, keow sawaoy, sam ru du and are now reaping rewards commensurate with these better types.
I tried about 20 of the most popular indian selections at the research station I spoke of earlier and some were quite ok but they did not meet with favour in the farming community.Private enthusiasts have long had bigger selections.

Fruitlovers I agree about renewal and in the last little while many of my trees have volunteered for mulch patrol.Kepel, minneola, navel, acerola, sharwil avo,red malay guava, various sapodillas,a black sapote,an ambarella and an imperial and ellendale mandarins have been cut from the backyard team recently. If they are not team players for one reason or another they contribute in another way.

6598
I am sure you are correct fruitlovers but mangoes per capita might be a different story.I think thailand has alot of expertise in fruit breeding and has developed mangoes to suit their tastes. It could be coincidental that my tastes mirror those of the thais with respect to mangoes rather than the indian's.

I have a soft spot for my african pride and gefner trees but new pinks mammoth had better fruit.I should never have tried all the new atemoyas because me and the african pride are not getting on as well any more.It may pay the ultimate price if there is any incontinence next season and the gefner is also on probation now.
