Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What to grow next?
« on: March 23, 2017, 02:57:17 PM »
From seed: phalsa berry, poha berry, cape gooseberry
From cutting: figs, pomegranate, kiwi, goumi,
Container plant: acerola, carambola, jujube, pineapple, pineapple guava, Chilean guava
There are also a lot of uncommon berries and other fruits that may do well in your climate without cold protection. E.g.- seaberry, serviceberry, maypop, huckleberry, honeyberry, goji, gooseberry, currant, elderberry, akebia.

Yes I grow them. Still wait for fruiting... They are interesting. When you put the dry berry to the water, it stay blue at first then violet. Fruits are rich in antioxidants.
Yeah! They'd make a beautiful tea. I would expect it to prefer a climate similar to that of the regular goji. Don't know if they are used fresh or in cereals like red goji.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seed grown Longan blooming!
« on: March 21, 2017, 09:52:47 PM »
That's great! I've tried propagating longan seeds from grocery store fruits. But it seems that the fruits we're irradiated. They never sprouted for me even though I generally have no issues sprouting seeds other than Passifloras and some Annonas. Hope the fruits hold on both trees!

I didn't' even think the leaves were from an Annonaceae! The fruits seem to vary in shape so much. If you presented a pic of the flowers, I may have been able to guess. I'm happy you found out what it was. ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pineapple -- a tough crown
« on: March 21, 2017, 02:09:22 AM »
Water method hasn't been practical for me. Water gets gross too quickly from algae, bacteria, etc. Like previously mentioned, its best to just stick the tops in dirt. I use a bit of rooting powder. Rooting pineapple tops has been a trial and error process. But once you get it, they are super easy to propagate. Keep the soil damp and not soggy. Also keep that humidity up!

I keep it in the greenhouse though. Only outside in summer. Hopefully the temps warm up soon so your Inga will take off. I have two plants but I'm pretty sure they're monoecious. A they are probably my most vigorous grower other than Passifloras! If you are going to plant one in ground, I'd take all the steps to prevent cold damage. Because you never know what weather we might get these days! They do not like strong winds either. Seeds (at least from U.S. sellers may be available in summer. Idk for sure. Some seeds have multiple embryos. :D I got 2 from Tradewinds but got three plants. I would have traded the third, smaller one, but I traded it last year.:(

Inga feuillei grows like weeds in a large pot for me. My seed-grown trees are less than 1 year in age and are 6+ ft tall. Dont know if they'd fruit successfully, but maybe I could tweak the environment to be more suitable. It generally stays between 70-85 degrees in the greenhouse, but not too humid. Good temps for growth, but I don't know about flowering.

Guess you guys are as confused as me.  :)
Yep :P Possibly a weed? Maybe you should keep a running list of seeds you've planted. It helped me! Cuts down the guessing.

This species like similar species seems to have many healing properties. Do you all think it has some commercial potential, or selling potential for the plants?

I just lost a rooted pomegranate to wilting. The bark is loose and puffy. Maybe it rotted from below. I'll have to examine it later.
What medium did you use to root it?
I have issues rooting woody cuttings. Maybe because the cuttings aren't sterile? I once tries rooting red mombin cuttings, but they failed. I only really have issues with propagation from
cuttings!  I know I don't water them too much. Maybe too much humidity causes rot? Sometimes tiny insects seem to invade the soil, I don't know what they do to cause rooting failure, but its frustrating. Maybe I shouldn't use rooting powder, and instead use rooting gel? Ugh..

Not a tree but maybe you could grow some low chill bramble berries. If they have thorns, people will be less likely to bother them, but the birds will still probably be all over them.
Also not a tree, but Nasturtium is an attractive edible plant. The flowers are pretty in salads, and it would be nice around a mail post.
Inga sp.- don't like high winds, but don't need much attention. Pretty foliage.
Dwarf pomegranate?
Guava?

I didn't have a good experience with Thailandmrk. They don't seem to know how to properly pack seeds. They were packed in a box to prevent the risk of being crushed. +1 for them. But no packing medium used to keep the seeds fresh. This may work with seeds that store for some time. But it definitely does not work with recalcitrant seeds. I guess they just don't know? Because the packaging was nice. When I mentioned the issue, I never got an answer back. :/ They have ignored complaints from buyers multiple times based in reviews.  They have good reviews overall. But I think it may be because of non-recalcitrant seed orders, possibly for recalcitrant seed orders delivered to countries closer to Thailand?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can you eat avocado seeds?
« on: March 07, 2017, 03:38:46 PM »
Apple seeds have a small amount of cyanide in them. I've heard of one person with a weird compulsion to eat apple seeds who died from cyanide poisoning doing so, but he had to eat a whole cup of seeds. You can survive eating small quantities of poison but that doesn't mean you should. Why even ask if you can eat avocado seeds when there are so many actual edible seeds to eat instead?
Could we not being this up again? lol XD

10 to 15 degrees might not be low enough. Even for low chill hour kiwis. :P Chill hours are 0 to7 C. There would be a guarantee that your temperatures would fall to the necessary levels or fall to the levels for long enough. Maybe there are some kiwi relatives you could look into that would work for your climate?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What kind of fruit is this tree?
« on: March 06, 2017, 10:31:15 PM »
These came from smooth black seeds about 1/2" long from Thailand.   I forgot the name of the tree.   Can you know from these pictures?

I believe it is a loquat tree.
I agree :)

148
Have pics of the fruit?
No pics this time.. I have a couple of fruits left, but they are over-ripe and kind of ugly, if that matters.
