Kaput  ::)  8)

Baccaurea ramiflora seeds are recalcitrant (zero germination if dried or not stored correctly). If i were you I wouldn't waste my money.  :-X
Thanks EvilFruit! I thought they wouldn't be viable for long. I just couldn't find any info in my search.

I found a listing for several seeds on EBay for a nice price from a Hawaiian seller. They were collected in August of 2015. Does anyone know of how long they stay viable? Should I buy them?

453
Since I got my permit, I have become a tropical fruit seed addict, and have been importing like crazy!

Thanks for the info! Will take it into consideration.

454
Thanks Oscar. I should have used the search button!

Not always well has been my experience so far.  Won't go into the details of my first try at this but long story short, the folks at the Texas USDA inspection station had no clue to their own regulations.  I'm well into my second try and the seeds made it to Miami last week and at the inspection station's PO box waiting to be picked up.  Nobody obviously made a trip to the post office on Friday so they will sit there until Monday.  Hopefully someone will make a trip then and all works out according to plan.
Geez you'd think customs in Texas would know!

raja puri

+1

Add to it which i feel is even better, Pisang Raja.   Now, since you are in Ohio, I would focus on varieties that are small in height and those that are more cold tolerant and any with a sort time to fruit and harvest (Viente Cohol fits this characteristic although I don't find it a top tier nana).
Could I keep blue Java at a decent height? I have a heated greenhouse that can take a max height of 12 ft.

I am interested in purchasing a few banana plants once the weather warms up. What are some flavorful varieties that will stay under 12 ft?

Question for sildanani and googer - did you pre-soak your seeds?

I soaked them for 24 hours in warm water prior to planting them.

I was planning on ordering from him this spring but realized he doesn't ship outside of PR. Does this only apply to buying trees?

TropicalFruitHunters- What a great opportunity! I've looked at your photo blog a few times and your specimens are such an inspiration. I will keep that in mind and contact you when my tree is big enough to be grafted. -Thanks

Its been in the single digits in Cincy lately and the space heaters in my greenhouse are struggling to keep all of the plants warm. My 10 month old custard apple seedling is a bit droopy from temps that went as low as the high 40s/low 50s. Will it be ok? Its now about 70 degrees. Is there anything I can do?

that's not a custard apple it's a cherimoya

Whaaat? I never purchased cherimoya seeds.. I did purchase soursop and custard apple seeds from Tradewinds. It has to be one of those two, unless they messed up on their part.

yeah....these single digit temps are a killer.  Your plants should be okay.  You could always get a seed heating mat.  That would help keep the roots warmer.

I do have a seed heating mat, but I use it for the smaller seedlings. I have space heaters with tiles on top off them to keep things even more insulated. I moved it closer to the heater and I believe it has started to perk back up again. Thanks TropicalFruitHunters!

I have some updated photos of my seedlings. I am curious of if it would be safe if I plant them in the ground this spring. 7 of the 10 seeds I purchased sprouted. That's a good rate I guess. Btw googer, I am a girl lol. ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Why does this happen to my Annonas?
« on: January 17, 2016, 06:06:19 PM »
I am also frustrated with anon. For me they grow beautifully, have strong trunks, nice full canopies, and get lots of sun, but of the 4 anonna I have I've only had two fruits this year from my Geffner, zilch (2 sugar apple, one still small custard apple) from the others.

My two sugar apples are rather large between 8' and 12' tall (1 1/2" trunk in ground 2 years and 3+" trunk in ground 4 years respectively) and neither have even flowered... considering years ago I had a 5' tall sugar apple with a dozen fruit my first year in the ground I can only speculate that it's the trees not me or my soil.

My soil here is sandy loamy and I fertilize not so nearly often as you do maybe quarterly. I'm giving them 2 more seasons then the 2 sugar apples get the yank.

Yeah, I tried to gradually add small amounts because the leaves were chlorotic and I guess that was too much? I'm still quite the newbie with plants.Gotta learn someday right? lol  :D Wish you luck with your Annonas gnappi!

i just had anonnas die from using too rich of soil. seems we are having better luck using mainly sand.
Will take this into consideration! Thanks

You mentioned you fertilize it monthly! Sometimes too much fertilizer in a young age, is enough to kill seedlings! Don't know if it is the case, but it's an possibility.

Yeah, that is a bit heavy handed. Its an unconscious habit of mine. I just noticed before it started fertilizing that the leaves were becoming chlorotic. so my first reaction was to fertilize. Thanks for the suggestion because I thought that this was some sort of bac. infection. Leaves are still chlorotic though?

« on: January 16, 2016, 03:04:21 PM »
I have attempted to grow both sugar apple and rollinia from seed with luck for only a temporary amount of time. The seedling would grow well for about 6 months and would at one point become chlorotic and develop brown/black tips and spots. I would remove these leaves and later, the tree's new growth refused to form and it lost its leaves and died! I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what disease it could be. I use organic potting soil and fertilize monthly.

470
I attempted to grow kiwano melon from seeds of a store bought fruit last spring. I think it got some form of rot (maybe fusarium wilt?) and continuously lost its bottom leaves. I later pitched it since the wilt would likely hinder fruit production.

471
Sorry, same species, different variety/strain.

472
That is Cucumis aka Horned Melon Rund. I'm not sure if the site misspelled "round" as "rund", but they are two different species.

I do not have a direct answer, but you could look into some zoos and conservatories. A number of them do offer paid and mostly unpaid internships. I don't know what percentage of the work that requires labor.

Question: If a particular species is polyembryonic, does that always mean you will have multiple sprouts? I started growing mango that I thought was Atalufo, but only has one sprout so far.

You might want to post this on the citrus trade page for a better chance of visibility. :D
