Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Where To Buy Tropical Fruit Online
« on: September 01, 2014, 08:36:00 PM »

[/quote]I don't know anything about online stores, but if you do both on site/local sales and online sales(shipping), then advertise every where: CL other sites/forums, etc (here included), i'm sure you will get some business coming to your future business. Price should be competitive with other sellers around you(I think fresh longans range from $1-$5 /lbs retail? and whole sale may be a bit less, depending on crop availability that year and how much they buy(wholesale). But, just don't charge anything like how lycheeonline prices theirs, $14-$20/lb  ???.

I guess that works for some, but not all people/consumers will agree to that price range.

Just my .02  :)

A neighbor of mine had and early crop (late June) and was getting mid $60's for 20lb boxes wholesale.  Now in peak season, they are going for $20 for a 20lb box wholesale if they take them at all.  I expect the later October/November crop will get a good price.

So since I moved into my new property a couple months ago, I've been working on my goal of getting a lot of mango varieties in the ground.  I bought 5 at the Fairchild mango festival and another 19 from Pine Island.  Several of them have been under attack, and some are doing great.  The Vallenato I bought from Fairchild is doing great, flushing and no damage at all.  The Angie has been in the ground the same 6 weeks and any new growth has been attacked.

My longan caretaker was here Saturday and showed him the damaged plants still in pots and he immediately said "son caracoles" (snails).  He said they come up at night and feed on the leaves and new growth and are back in the soil in the daytime.

Some of the leaves were curled like in some of the pictures I see here.  He said he was going to spray them for me (he was fumigating the longans for ants and whitefly).  I had to leave so I didn't see if he actually  was able to.

But I went to home depot and bought this snail bait today.  Does anyone have experience with this being effective?

I was out trimming the grass around the trees and putting down the snail bait at dusk today and what did I see on the Alphonso mango I planted yesterday but this snail on a top leaf of the Alphonso, confirming his diagnosis.

Here's the Angie that I'm still hoping is going to make it after being ravaged.  New flushes have been killed off almost immediately.  The green grass around it are just freshly cut clippings on top of the mulch ring.

Notice the prominent disclaimer on the box stating clearly the prohibition of shipment to Florida.
Harry, that's because you guys can grow them as well, so no sale for you guys ;) I'll gladly get some from you next summer, I couldn't get any from Alex(squam) this past season, he said the crop this year was scarce, so not worth it for sale. Though, I did get some of his lychee. They were ok, I would love to get some of your fresh longans, next year, if you sell them to forum members?

I have a late crop coming this year in late October/November.  I've never shipped and have a grower manage the grove from A to Z and he sells to a Chinese wholesaler.  Next year I may set aside a few trees to see if I can establish an online presence as well as by appointment only.  I'm not sure how much effort it takes to generate enough orders to make an online store feasible.  Any thoughts from someone how has experience in this is appreciated.

I had some come out in July/August and the were outstanding.  I gave some to friends who never tried them (and didn't even know what they were) and they loved them and want more.

Beautiful tree.  I hope my new pickering fares half as well.

A row of salak palms will sure keep everything out of your yard.  If you grow the right variety you also will get loads of nice fruits.

I like it.  I've thought about thorny plants as an option.

I spoke to the sheriff also and he suggested cameras, signs, and a higher fence.  With cameras they can find the culprits and prosecute.  He confirmed that someone scaling your fence to steal fruit is a felony.

If the tree was not behind a fence it would not be a felony it seems.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Way to Consume Carambola
« on: August 26, 2014, 09:31:00 PM »
I'm harvesting a lot of carambola now and juicing some.  I use the Omega Vert juicer and is one of the best out there.  I've been using it for 4 years now.  It gets a high yield, leaving very dry pulp.  It's very quiet, low speed, with a single auger and basket to grind and press the juice.  It's great for fruit, leafy greens, roots or anything else.  It will even handle wheat grass.  It's easy to clean also.  I can clean it in a couple minutes.  Being low speed, it does minimal damage to the produce being juiced with almost no oxidation.

It's not good with pulpy fruits like mango or pineapple, but neither was my high speed centrifugal juicer.  Celery needs to be cut into smaller bits to avoid clogging the pulp ejector with the fibers.

I appreciate the tip about trimming the green edges off carambola.  It was news to me.

Here's a link to the juicer if anyone is interested.

Your grove is a commercial venture? Will be one when the mango trees start producing?

First it is my primary residence that just happens to have a nice producing longan grove.  It was one of the things I liked about the property.  The bordering gas station was one of the negatives.  It's hard to find the exactly perfect place so I compromised on the gas station as a neighbor.  I'm 2 months in the place now and excited to be able to finally grow my own tropical fruit.

Also don't plant the mango trees that produce large reddish or purplish  attractive fruits on your perimeter, near foot traffic etc. This is where you plant mango trees that produce smaller green mangoes that go yellow a day or two before ripeness. That can even be picked with a little yellow and brought inside to ripen

Two examples would be Fairchild and Philippine

Yeah I agree.  It came with the property and was the only mango tree in the grove in the worst possible spot out of 6 acres.  I'm planting 30 mango trees now that are well hidden.  In 4 years or so when the new ones are producing I can axe the original mango tree.

I border a busy gas station on Krome avenue that leads to many property encroachments.  I came home from a trip to find my mango tree emptied and today an avocado tree that had hundreds of avocadoes completely stripped.  Both trees are on the fence line to the gas station.

What legal options does one have to protect one's property from illegal entry such as razor wire, dogs, electric fence, other?  Obviously I'm also concerned about a trespasser suing me if he gets injured on my property.

I bought a 3 gal PPK Saturday at Pine Island.  There were 2 left.  It was a hunt and a surprise to find it since it wasn't on the available list.

Hi all.  I'm new to the forum but have been lurking for a while picking up great information.  I have a lots of producing longan trees and am in the process of adding about 25-30 mango cultivars.  I have 7 in the ground and another 17 in 3 gallon pots and a few more on my wish list I'll probably buy this week.  It's nice to be a close neighbor of Pine Island Nursery.  I also have some carambola, avocado, lychee and monstera deliciosa.

I was at Pine Island today and saw several Manzanillos in 3 gallon containers.  After reading up on it I might go back and get one on Monday.
