What do you have left to sell, Adam? You know, I'm easily tempted.   :D

That's a nice home. Looks like it is in a very sunny location. I agree about the music. I think it would even raise eyebrows if played in public from people who could hear, but not see the video ...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Florida Lychee Season 2016
« on: May 25, 2016, 11:05:54 PM »
I can't speak to the supermarket prices as I don't live in Florida, but the seller Suzanne Greene sent out an email saying she will be taking orders for Lychees and that she had a good crop. 11 a lb. Not affliated with her, just bought an airlayer once, and still get those emails each year, and some of you may be interested.

I can get good quality Lychee at the asian groceries here, usually for less than 6 a lb. It may not be picked 30 minutes ago, but tasty and enough for my little summer craving.

Was this agreed to in the prenup? ...  :P JK, but in reality there are worse ways to spend your time and hard earned money. Get her involved in picking out the trees, and you may have a convert.

Was there anything super rare, like longkong or kepel? I'm curious whether a few of those things pop up.

106
I'm certainly no expert on the species, but I will share my experience. I ordered from Oscar last year, and the seeds arrived quick, and I planted them. There was some issue with my weather I think, but I managed 2 sprouts ... one was clearly a super plant, because it grew so fast. I repotted it, and it grew even more, starting to branch even. It grew to about a foot or maybe more or less by Winter and it remained healthy and vibrant. Sadly, it defoliated and I think died, but, here's the important part. It deteriorated, not because of my growing conditions, but it got infested with scale somehow(scale is a serious problem in my garden), and succumbed to the damage ... I tried my best to remove all the scale, and took the leaves off, but I think it was too late. I keep it in case it sprouts from the bottom ...

So, I had to put in another order. :) It's a pretty plant, and not more difficult to grow than a Longan ... keep an eye on pests though.

107
I can't find much on that variety of Longan ... Fortune Eye, can you talk about it at all? There was mention of it at Toppy's, but not much information.

What an interesting leaf shape. I thought it was another species at first, and was wondering "where the Jackfruit is", it almost looked like Pigeon Pea.

On a side note, welcome to the forum. I got a little excited when I saw your name, as I have a very fond memory of Malaga. When I was 13, I got to go to Marbella, Torremolinos, and Malaga and it was incredible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When do you stop collecting plants?
« on: May 11, 2016, 11:49:45 PM »
I think you should ask yourself, Why would you want to? It's part of the fun, it's the whole point of the hobby, the journey is just as much fun as the destination when it comes to plants ...

Isn't that what separates us and the people who simply farm to sell the fruit? We find pleasure in learning about a plant, sourcing the plant, growing the plant, and then enjoying it's fruit and sharing with our loved ones. If we put an "end" or limit to that, then we are only limiting our own passion. The saying is "everybody needs a hobby", well if we "stop" collecting, then we are at least depriving ourselves of the full experience of this particular hobby, don't you think?

I am actually saddened when I think there could be an end to finding new species, so contrary to the topic, I don't ever want to stop. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Garcinia hombroniana

I hope this isn't hijacking. Could this be used for suitable roostock for things such as Mexican Garcinia and Achachairu and Mangosteen? I'd be interested in buying a few, if you wouldn't mind shipping them.

I love this. It reminds me of that photo from a long time ago when someone put many different kinds of nephelium in a row. It really makes you want to collect a whole genus. I'd love to see syzygium and myrciaria in a "lineup".

While I wish you big success in the business, I hope you won't forget about your pal (and loyal customer) here in Maryland. :'( Lol, I better order as much as I can before it's too much hassle for you to ship to me.  :P

113
Thanks guys for the responses. I didn't think it would be so difficult to find a grafted one, but learning seedling may be good, I may go with that. Any idea on the time to fruit when it's grafted vs seedling? Thanks

114
Looking for grafted Abiu. Thanks

115
If I can get my hands on rootstocks then I may, did you ever get my pm? Sent it on Wed.

116
Tetsu:
What did you end up using? Your Mexican Garcinia seedlings? I hear you about the size. I notice the Mex Garcinia is bigger over all, and you would need a bigger rootstock of similar garcinia. I don't want to gamble with my Mex garcinia rootstock, because they are so slow growing, and I already lost a big one during transplant shock. I have two garcinia pedunculata, which are bigger naturally. I wonder if they would work. My achacha is narrow like you mentioned.

gunnar: sending you a pm.

vernmented: If anyone has grafted it all, it's probably Raul.

117
Hi, as a lot of you know a fellow forum member on here, Raul, is going to collect scions from a Mexican Garcinia Limoncillo tree. I would love to be able to order some scions from him, but don't have suitable rootstock. This is sort of a last ditch effort ... does anybody have any Garcinia rootstock (something with a 1/4" diameter or larger ) they would be willing to sell and ship to me? I would need to know as soon as possible. Thanks a ton, y'all. :)

118
I wish I had a dozen too, Jay.  :o Lol

Thanks for sharing the information. It does make you wonder why growers in Asia would bother with grafted if there wasn't a benefit. I suppose this post supports that in fact there is a benefit. Maybe it's not typical, but maybe it is, at least there.

119
I've been looking for Arenga Pinnata for quite some time. Please let me know if you find some. I love Kaong in syrup.

120
Is anyone ordering any and would be willing to cut me in on 2 of their scions? I don't need more than 2, so I would otherwise not order any if I had to order solo.

121
What a nice change of pace the trip must have been. That and it's good to see the network of friends this forum has created. Thanks for sharing.

My guesses for the fruit are:
Kumquat
Sapodilla
Nutmeg
Green Peppercorns
Arazaboi
Natal Plum
Guava

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Off topic, orchid lovers thread

I was actually hoping for a section on orchids and tropical flowers, but then I remembered that's why we left gw ... lol but who knew at the time that I would prefer this format and system much more, and never care to go back to gw, even for flowers, so it's understandable to want such a topic here.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB Dwarf Orinoco Banana Plants
« on: April 07, 2016, 05:11:37 PM »
If anyone has any dwarf Orinoco banana pups I'd appreciate a note. Please let me know how many you have and how much.

I thought I'd ask here before ordering on ebay. Thanks

124
Mine are so slow-growing, they look like fakes. Lol, for comparison, my mangosteen puts new leaves out with better frequency.

125
Another grafting success, Adam. Way to go.
