Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocado thread
« on: October 27, 2017, 12:10:11 AM »
Glad to see you are having success with your cado graftings, Mark!

I especially interested in following your Sir prize variety, will be interested to see until when the fruits needed to stay hanging on the tree before ready for harvesting.  If they stay till March/April 2018, then I am afraid the tree won't have time to flower and bearing fruits again next year (2018)...thus, this would make this tree an alternate bearing one, won't it?

FYI, my 10 ft tree had a couple of fruits in 2015 that I picked in December that year (much too early per JF: I agree, tasted bland), no flowers in 2016 for some reason, this year 2017 have some fruits hanging, along with few others from different variety scions...

Btw Spaugh, your avo trees look very healthy, glad they survive last week's Santa Ana's wind with no damage...!

Curious to find out if this Sir prize variety is indeed an alternate bearing tree, anyone has some opinion to share? Thanks!

My Sir prize:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is this cherimoya doing okay?

Can’t see the details well fr your photos, but overall leaves look normal. Burnt leaves usually start at the tips on upper/exposed branches, then turn to crispy like chips...; but they should recover as already mentioned.
To help minimize leaves burnt, I normally do extra watering the morning before the afternoon heat (in my area, anything above 95F) was predicted...

Hi Miracle, thanks a lot for sharing your efficient looking design!

My brother gave me 4 cuttings from his trees 2 days ago,
so your design showing up here is just in the nick of time for me...! :)

No, the fruit doesn't have to be soft to be picked; in my experience. I think the cherimoya fruits will drop first before they get to be soft. Just by observing the changing color of the fruit, the fruit on the first 2 photos look ready for picking to me; or else you'll be risking fruit drop.
Another simple test that I use is to pull it "slightly" down, or bend the stem to about 30 degree or so..., when it drops into your hand, then you'll know, take it to the kitchen counter for couple of days or so till it becomes soft -like checking papaya/avocado etc- enjoy the fruit!  :)

I read stuff like this, and I get depressed. Where can a mere mortal go to taste such mangos in Los Angeles?

How can one acquire budwood?

I feel like I've been left out of the club!

I am like you, never tasted all these delicious mango varieties described above..., but my time will come as my trees mature...2 brand new varieties -for me- I tasted this year, and many more in a year or two as my trees/scions mature, including LZ and Sweet Tart!

Cherimoya season is starting early. I've had 4 Pierce drop and have a few 2lb. Anyone in SoCal experiencing this?

I have no dropped fruit Frank, but as usual your trees seem to be ahead of me, I have not picked any moya yet this season...From the 5 moya trees that I have, I only got 2  fruits total last year (they are all young; in the ground for about 2-3 years).

Here's my fruiting moya trees:
African Pride atemoya:

Ausie atemoya:

Orton cherimoya:

Dr. White cherimoya (thanks for the scion, Simon!)

The seeds I received on Sept 21 has now started to germinate (in moist paper towel).
Just for your info...

Wow, its encouraging and exciting to see the proven result: successfully growing and fruiting the many varieties of mangos in Southern California. (Of course in Florida and Texas, too!)

Thanks to all for the valuable "show and tell", indeed it must have been a group effort to put this all together!

BRAVO!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Grafting soursop on cherimoya
« on: September 21, 2017, 11:58:58 PM »
I didn't realize how easy to graft soursop on cherimoya.  I grafted 3 branches on cherimoya seedling, and they all took and are growing well.  I wonder if the soursop grafted on cherimoya will handle the cold as well as (or little less than) cherimoya does.  I posted the topic from other forum but didn't get many responses; therefore, I post here now. Anyway, this winter will answer my question.

Did anybody graft soursop on pawpaw?

I am living in San Jose, CA (9b)

Just wondering, if you care to share and give any updates on your grafted soursop into cherimoya, especially during the past Winter of 2015 and 2016?

Hope yours are successful, if so, I would like to do the same, since I got few tiny seedlings growing at the moment...Thanks, Hoang!

What do you ladies and gentlemen use to cover grafts on an in ground tree?

Just wanted to share of what happened to my 2 grafted venus manggo scions about a month ago; they both pushed new leaves like normal, but I didn't have paper bag coverings on them  like I normally would.

Then a hot day or two came and fried those two young leave buds to crispy brown, so I covered them right away, but it was too late, few days later both scions dried up, unable to recover... :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rambutan vs. Pulisan
« on: August 29, 2017, 05:53:26 PM »
There is a lot of variation in rambuan and pulasan. There are some pulasans that are considered very inferior, mostly because the pulp clings tenaciously to the seed. But those are mostly wild pulasans and the selected cultivars are no comparison. But when comparing the best of the rambutans to the best of the pulasans i'd say the pulasans win by quite a big margin. The main reason for this is that the pulasan has a lot more complex taste, and rambutans are just sweet. It;s kind of like comparing a just sweet mango with a boutique mango with very complex fruity taste. You're probably not going to toss either away. but which will you prefer to eat loads of? Which will you get tired of first?
The main problem with pulasan is that it is not as widely adapted for growing out of its range as the rambutan. When grown out of its rannge the pulasan is a lot slower growing, much more delicate, and not as consistent bearing. I have seen pulasans well loaded with fruits here, but that takes many years and some TLC.
(BTW it's pulasan, not pulisan.)

Thanks for clarifying the difference between the wild and the selected cultivar of pulasan, Oscar. So I can still have opportunity to enjoying a better tasting pulasan in the future...
Now I am wondering, anyway to determine from the outside appearance, if the pulasan was from the wild or from a selected cultivar?

117
Thanks Luke; just ordered.

Lacking shade cloth, I use a piece of paper and make  a "bag" using few staples and  small holes on the side...

I cut open the Golek today, here's my personal observation:

fiberless, creamy textured, not too sweet with just a slight hint of sourness, hardly has any typical mango aroma; sorry no brix report. (don't have the tool).
This fruit ripened super fast; when I found it yesterday, it was still rather firm, but today it became so surprisingly soft. My wife's comment was: "similar to a good Manila mango from the market".

So, needless to say, this very first and only fruit from my young tree didn't impressed me. Not sure if this is the same exact variety that I used to know, as to my recollection this variety is one of the high demand mangos in Java, where fruits are bigger,  firmer and smoother. Or. could it be that the future crops will get better? If not getting any better, I won't be despair, now that I understand that I can always try to do the top-working... ;D

This year overall was kind of a down year for mangoes. But these were tops IMO...

1.Carrie
2. Bombay
3. LZ / PPK they tasted virtually identical this year to me. Lz a little bland compared to years past
4. Edward
5. Rosigold - about 75% tasted really good - super high sugar content, almost like a cake frosting with smooth silky flesh, zero fiber, even around the seed.
6. Aeromanis (Harumanis?) - Had this one at the end of May at the fruit and Spice park in Homestead. Tasted really clean and sweet with good acid component. Was wondering where I could get some budwood since it does not seem to be propigated anymore...

I am nursing 2 Harumanis scions now, got mine from "Squam256" 2 months ago...

Found these 2 detached off their stems on their own today; very first ripening fruits from  2 trees:

Left: "Golek"; Right: Mahachanok (Thanks to Warren-"Wslau"-for your scion gift!).
Can't wait to have a taste, soon!  :)

Oh they got quiet a while......earliest is November they get huge some 3lb

Mark, I was so eager to taste my first of 2 Sir Prize fruits, so I harvested mine on Dec 15 2015; I found out they were still too young: the fruits was just bland tasting; (see foto below) so I'll be more patient this time around... :D.

It had no flower in 2016; flowered in Feb 2017 and have some fruits hanging at this time. Does anyone know if SP is an alternate bearing tree? Is there anything we can do to prevent this from happening?

125
Talking about papaya trees, I have 1.5 years old 4 seedling trees in a hole, the shortest one -but with the thickest trunk- about 4 ft tall is the only one having fruits; the other 3 taller ones (about 5-7 ft tall) are not even having any flower.

What do you recommend I should do with the other 3 trees? Thanks!
