Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Genova Red

JF,

It was the first time I had seen ilama harvested, and the locals said it was the end of season, so maybe they just wanted to finish up.  I trust you and Rob, makes perfect sense, I do the same with my sugar apples.  BTW, your fruit and trees look good! Sometimes jealous of your Med climate.

Thanks for the Annona info the other day too.

In Florida they crack, but when I was in El Salvador, I did not see any cracking. Maybe the locals were just anxious.  Ahhhh man, those were good memories, a couple Ilamas a day, countless fresh cocnuts, grilled corn on the cob, and surfing Punta Roca/ El Zonte/ Sunzal.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: APHIS / USDA / small lots of seed - again
« on: December 16, 2015, 09:02:09 AM »
I just got mine a few weeks ago, and fyliu is right. Level 2 access if you want to do it online, which was super easy for me. After you apply for Level 2 access you go to a USDA office and present your identification, I was there 10 minutes. Log back in afterwards, and apply for the permit, mine was given permission within 3 hours.  Their online process is a little screwy, but it will not let you submit until you fill it out correctly.

Echo is a good place to go.  You also have Jene's Tropicals in the Tampa area.  Definitely go to Pine Island, the whole Island is just cool to visit.  Many small farms that sell right out of their front yards.  There is a guy between Fruitscapes and Pine Island Road, that has a serious collection of fruit trees, I think it's called Pantropic Farm, he has a small sign right on Stringfellow, and I think he is on Cristo Way if I remember correctly.  Very impressive orchard!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jaboticaba root suckering
« on: December 14, 2015, 05:59:48 PM »
I got 6 red Jabos in 15 gallon pots, and a handful of them send up root suckers. I recently removed 2 different suckers with roots attached and potted them up. The first one over a month ago, and the second this past weekend. The first one has not dropped leaves so will have to see how it goes. I have one Red that had over a dozen suckers but they sprouted from much deeper in the root ball, so I just prune them away. I was wondering if I could stool a small Red Jabo, gonna experiment with that next year.

Put me down for one, and hopefully some other Myrciaria grafts.

How old is your rootstock? I am curious since I just got some seeds started.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: gibberellic acid for annona seeds

I read that the less expensive scales will actually drift if you keep adding things to it that's less than .02g in weight. So adding 0.011g would make the scale drift it to 0. But the main reason I didn't get a scale is I have no other use for a sub-gram scale.

I also didn't want to make a liter of solution to soak just a pinch of seeds.

I agree fyliu, it took me a while to justify the scale, but I have been germinating up to a few hundred seeds a year and realized its a good long-term investment.  Plus you can scale your volume down like Mike T posted.  I normally scale it down to 4 ounces of water for say 10 to 20 medium size seeds.

I use a AWS ACP Pro-200 scale (Amazon) that measures 200 grams max down to 0.01 grams and works very well.  I have had good success with Molecular Plant Growth's quick dissolve GA3, which has 1000 PPM mix rates directly on the bottle label. Their conversion is 1 gram GA3 to 1 liter of water.

135
I have used a large nail clipper, files, and rasps in the past, but still have had poor germination rates.   :o :o :o

Any other secrets from the propagation gurus out there? Just curious since I plan to start another round of cherimoya seeds in a month for future Ilama grafts, after the last round succumbed to damping off.  Maybe in builder sand under intermittent mist?

I thought the brown tips is from nutrient deficiency/excess.  I see it in my trees when there is either a potassium deficiency or an excess of calcium (high calcium levels cause potassium deficiency).  Our well water in Florida has high carbonates, and the resulting excess buildup of calcium out-competes the potassium during nutrient uptake.  I think that is why Dr. Campbell at Fairchild recommends the high potassium fertilizers for south Florida (0-0-49).

If it were me, I would seek out Faford professional line (3B, 52 or really any of the "3" or "4" series) or Promix.  You will be better off.  I do not like using potting mixes with fertilizers or manures incorporated into them.

Rob is right, these are all industry standard mixes.  The Fafard 3B and 52 mixes, as well Promix, all have good ratios of components.  You will get the best results with these.

How tall are the trees of these 3 fruits?

I am going to be staying in Ojai, CA from December 26th until the 30th, and was hoping to gorge myself on some fruit  ;D ;D ;D.  I plan to be around the Ventura and Santa Barbara areas each morning, and was hoping someone could recommend a market or farm where I could buy some cherimoyas and/or atemoyas.  The friends I'm staying with are not up on these kinds of fruit   ??? :o  ::), but know the area well, so any info would be awesome.

Are seeds still available?

Just found this thread Adam, and I am interested on the Myrciaria glomerata/glazioviana differences. I bought some seeds from Vivero Anones a couple years ago, and Sherry had them listed as glomerata. Have you grafted any of the more common Jabo types onto the glomerata/glazioviana species, other than stripes or guaquiea?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is this container Sugar Apple ripening?
« on: August 21, 2015, 11:18:49 PM »
When they are young, they will just put out a fruit or two, and the fruit will stay small. Like the others have said, they will crack with excessive moisture, and you will know if it's ripe when the segments separate...... plus you will see some lighter yellowish colors near the base of each segment.  For me cracking normally occurs during the ripening stage, so do the daily pressure test or just wait for it to fall off.

Between this thread and the other, I called Exotica in Vista , CA.  Owner just told me his tree died and he no longer has the yellow fruited type. Buy he did say his originally came from Florida, so off to hunting Muntingia calabura variants..... :o

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Does Cold Hardy Mango exist?

I am 30 minutes north of Merritt Island, and my record low is 27 degrees.  We normally only experience that temp for an hour or 2 just before sunrise during freeze events.  During the winters of 2009 through 2010, we experienced that temp for 3 to 4 hours per night over a dozen nights during each of those winters, with plenty of other 30 degree nights as well.  I saw mango trees killed to the ground, but I know of at least 30 adult size trees that only experienced leaf burn with no over head protection of any sort.  These adult trees are 20 to 30 feet tall.  Only 3 trees that I know of are near the intercoastal waterway, thus gaining its protection.  All the other trees are at least 2 miles away and none of these trees are near any lakes.

Hey Jonathon, that might have been me over on the other forum.  I am the one who posted I live near the Space Center.

My LSU Purple figs have done well for me.  Most of mine are currently in their second leaf and in 7 gallon pots.  They have around a dozen or so fruits each, and my main crop is just ripening now.  My breba crop was light, since I started the cuttings February 2014.  I got one colored up that I am letting hang, shrivel, and maybe get some sugar spots on it.  If the wildlife don't get to it through the organza bag, I will post an external and internal pic in the next few days.

I will have some cuttings this fall/winter/spring for anyone interested

148
Just read in The Encyclopedia of Fruits and Nuts, that this fruit germinates extremely well after going through a bird or a bat....plus for germinating seeds, high light is required.... so Oscar is dead on.

149
I like the fruit you let me try Adam.... so I tracked down some trees to buy, and met a woman who has an adult tree in the ground over in Merritt Island.  She says it produces larger than the normal size fruit, so gonna get an air layer from her in a couple days. So next up will be the yellow and white fruited types.

Does anyone have either the yellow or white by chance? I would be looking for cuttings.... I plan to build a small mist bed next week.
