Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: wanted: myrciaria aureana seeds
« on: August 06, 2015, 03:18:07 PM »
Hey Adam, just wanted to say thanks for that 3 gallon white Jabo you sold me a few weeks ago, and lething me sample some of the fruit, they were awesome. I really like the leaves, and it just pushed a bunch last week.  I haven't forgot, I will send you some pics of my Pitomba this weekend.

To all the forumers, buy Adam's seeds!

Only orchards are in Merritt Island, that I know of. Only stands are the Asian markets, and their's tend to be way overpriced and the cultivars are just a few SE Asian types. A few of the Asian markets will have jackfruit, longan, rambutan, wax jambu, and some other tropicals.

Hey Adam, I tried to stop by your place a few times a month ago, but could never make it happen. Fortunately, my schedule is wide open until the end of August. I am very interested in both kinds of boxes. I will be in touch later today, so I can set up a time to finally see your new place.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Smith and Excel Figs Wanted
« on: June 25, 2015, 06:14:27 PM »
That's too bad about Durio....his inventory listing was pretty decent and several people recommended him on the different fig forums.  I was hoping to place an order with him this winter... but at least I have found many more fig nurseries to purchase from.  Ourfigs.com has a sticky thread of reputable sources.  Threefoldfarm.org looks like a good one and has had good reviews, but they look to be out of Smith currently and don't have Excel on their list.  Also, the Encanto Farms website (also figs4fun forum) has an exhaustive list of fig cultivars, but like most everyone else, they primarily ship during the winter.

Sending you a PM

I think that's their nature when grown in pots, to flush intermittently.  Your Brebas should grow quicker, due to their shorter window. Not familiar with growing figs where you are, but as I understand their growth habits, you will get another fruit set on any new wood produced this year. Most likely after the brebas drop, or just before. Gonna have to watch your fig for a few seasons, and learn its tendencies, and times....

Alex's (Squam) off Southern Blvd in West Palm, right next to 95. Plus Walter Zills residence in Boynton, and Truly Tropical. Then all kinds of places in the Redlands south of Miami. I was just down in Palm Beach County last weekend, and every mango tree in every yard is popping. I saw creepers everywhere, eyeballing mangos on people's trees. Frigging mango extravaganza in SFL right now.

Ed,
I second, going by Painter's place, I was lucky enough to get a tour in 2012. He has an awesome collection, not sure if he has Zill's oral sugar grenades but I ate some PPKs and he has all the normal Jackfruit cultivars, plus a nice collection of Garcinias and other stuff to impress. Have a good trip!!  :) :)

I want a seat!  ;) ;D ;D

Luc,

You can also go to another forum called ourfigs.com

Also, all the fig fiends sell cuttings on Ebay year round as well.

Look for Black Madeira, Red Lebanese, Violet de Bordeaux, and the three Col de Dame series... Blanc, Gris, and Noir, if you want some of the top tier varieties.

My stupidest mistake took place in front of my daughter.  I was coming back from Costa Rica and was curious how the customs people dealt with people bringing seeds into the US.  I had collected a dozen or so yellow cashew seeds, a few dozen guanabana seeds, some heliconia seeds, and some ornamental seeds as well. So, my daughter and I are going through customs, and I told the customs agents I had brought some seeds back, and was hoping to talk to them and pick their brains while they inspected my ornamental seeds that I had planned to show them.  Well it didn't work out as planned, they wouldn't let me take them out of the bag for inspection, and decided to do it themselves, and guess what, they found the cashew seeds instead of the ornamentals.  The funny thing was, neither of the customs agents had a clue what kind of seeds they were.  So after a little bit of talking, the female agent whips her knife out, and proceeds to cut into the cashew nut.  I am telling her not to get the juice on her skin, because it most likely will cause a bad rash, and she tells me she knows what she's doing.  Wham, juice bleeds all on their table, hits her arm just above the glove, and without even a comment throws my seeds in the the garbage.  I am just standing there staring at her arm and waiting, but she just tells me to leave.  Needless to say, I felt like a dumbass in front of my 15 year old daughter who knew what was going on, and how much I valued those cashew seeds.  She still makes funny smuggling comments whenever I travel.

4. Durian, I have only had mediocre imports

I will give a shot at "trying to not kill them."

I have a sand hill forest, just a half mile from my house.  There are a couple of large areas covered in gopher apples, plus bunches of gopher tortoises, all along the paved trail that goes through the area.  When these areas are fruiting, its pretty awesome to see.  There are also lots of Vaccinium stamineum, in the area, and all are currently fruiting.  I will try to get pics of some of the mats.

I heard there is a good expose on wealthy southern Californians watering their lawns everyday , after their Governor issued some kind of 25% reduction across the board on water use.   :(  So does that = 25% less showering = stinkier people 25% more of the time..... I think it might be time to buy stock in deodorant companies

Mine just has 1 or maybe if I'm lucky 2 growth flushes a year, but i water it heavily from March to the beginning of winter.  I found that it can take granulated fertilizers without tip burn, but the last few years I have been feeding it fish/kelp fertilizers.  Mine was originally in part shade but once I transplanted it to a 15 gallon pot, I moved it to full sun, at least 6 hours to 8 hours a day.  But basically the growth flushes are only a half foot on average.  Good luck all, because its actually a decent fruit, and the tree is beautiful.  I am trying an air layer on an offshoot right now, any one have any luck propagating them this way?

Here is a pic of my 25 gallon Pitomba, that is fruiting for the second year.
Some of the fruits are round in shape and others more fig shaped (with a neck).  I have been eating them both after they fall, when they drop once just touching them,  and maybe a day or 2 before, when you gotta pull on them.  Once they have fallen the acidity seems to drop a little and they tend to be mushy where the flesh has discolored slightly.  Others have reported they come into fruiting slowly, but mine started fruiting around 3 to 4 feet high.  Plus for me they fit the time period between grumichamas/blueberries and the beginning of lychee season, which has just fired up.  Another plus is my girlfriend and daughter don't care for them, so more for me  ;D ;D.  Also never have had dieback on this one.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What variety of Lychee is this?
« on: May 11, 2015, 06:59:17 PM »
I have a question for all the lychee gurus. For 2 years while working in Melbourne Fl, I was getting a small solid pink lychee with very small light red spots up around the stem area.  Also the skin was very smooth compared to all the other lychees I have eaten.  Unfortunately, I never took any pics back then, and the Asian market, where I would buy them, never could tell me the cultivar name.  It was also the earliest season type they would get in, only lasting for a week or so in the middle of May.  These were some of the most tasty I can remember from an early season type.  Any thoughts as to the cultivar based on my limited description without pictures?

Sorry if I didn't respond to any PMs  :-[, as I was away for most of the weekend.

The reason my prices seem so good to most of you Cali residents is I am just a collector, and I will be selling my house at the end of summer and I really need to sell all of the big trees and extras I have.  I originally planned to have purchased land by now and had these trees planted in ground, but a life curveball is pushing that back a year or so.  Check back because I am planning to add more trees and pics to the list tonight or tomorrow.   ;) ;) ;)

172
Definitely sad, after growing them up from 3 gallon trees 3 to 4 years ago, plus all the pulling them into the garage during mild freezes.

I am keeping a 25 gallon Jaboticaba and a 25 gallon Pitomba that is fruiting for the second time. But they are going to a family members yard for a year or two.

173
I have some 25 gallon trees and one 15 gallon tree for sale.  Unfortunately I will be moving this summer, and need to thin the herd.  I am in Titusville, Florida but travel frequently throughout both the central and southern parts of the state on weekends, so bringing the trees to these areas shouldn't be a problem.

25 Gallon 'Makok' sapodilla $100  Sold

25 Gallon Cherry of the Rio Grande $100  Sold

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Smith and Excel Figs Wanted
« on: May 08, 2015, 07:33:01 PM »
Other than Just Fruits and Exotics up in the Panhandle, you are not gonna find them too easily.  You could also try Durionursery.biz, but they too are out of the Smith variety.  Not sure about Excel, but I have seen cuttings listed on Ebay.

I just started 5 cuttings of Smith that I got off EBay, from a seller who is on a couple of the fig forums.  I think he has more cuttings for sale if your interested in going that route.

If they all take, I will not need that many, so I could sell you one for a much lower cost than having a small plant shipped to you.   Send me a PM if your interested.
