Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reed Avocados in April?
« on: April 03, 2018, 04:04:13 PM »
Hi all, my two and a half year old Reed Avocado is dropping its fruit.  The tree is about ten feet tall and three or four feet diameter.  I let it hold three fruit last year and stripped the other fruits off.  Two days ago it dropped one of the fruit and today it dropped another.  The fruit are very big the first weighted over 24 ounces and the second weighted over 26 ounces.  I've read that Reed usually weight 16-20 ounces.  Is this true?  If so are these fruit dropping because they are ready?  Or are they too big for the small tree?  Any advice would be appreciated.

The first fallen fruit is getting soft and I will try it tonight.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dot mango dying in SoCal
« on: March 20, 2018, 12:26:32 PM »
Hi All, I thought I would share my experience growing Dot mango in SoCal.  I knew it was disease prone in SoCal but I didn't realize how weak it truly is.  I bought this Dot as a three gallon and it has been in the ground for about a year.  It has experienced consistent die back so about six months ago I started spraying it with copper and sulfur once a month.  That seems to have helped as it kept the remaining one foot plant alive threw winter.  But it has now started to die off again.  I think this is do to all the recent dew and fog.  I have not given up and I bought a seven gallon Dot to replace it.  This plant seems much more disease resistant.  I think this might be because I have been spraying it since I got it or because it is larger or because it is mislabeled and I accidently got a different more disease resistance variety.  Time will tell.  Does anyone have any advice to keep this variety alive?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Strange Royal Lee Cherry behavior
« on: March 20, 2018, 12:19:03 PM »
Hi all, here are some pictures of my Royal Lee and Minnie Royal Cherries planted at the end of 2015.  They have grown like weeds and have been pruned back every winter.  Last year I got about 3 fruit off the Minnie Royal.  This year the Royal Lee is blooming before the Minnie Royal and it has fruit!  Strange thing is, I thought the Royal Lee needed the Minnie Royal to cross pollinate?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee success in SoCal
« on: March 20, 2018, 12:13:44 PM »
Hi all, I thought I would share pictures of my Brewster Lychee planted as a 15 gallon at the end of 2015.  It has grown like a weed and far exceeded my expectations as far as health and vigor.  For me it has been a very low maintenance tree.  I was planning on pruning it this weekend but discovered flowers emerging all over it!  I hope it holds fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need help with small air layered Lychees
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:50:08 PM »
Hi all, these are two very small "micro air layers" of Kwa Luk Lychee.  I have had them for about four months.  At first they seemed to be doing fine but now the leaves are yellowing and some leaves are dropping.  I'm not a Lychee expert of nutritional expert so I thought I would look for some advice here.  I'm scared to fertilize them because I know others here have lost small air layered Lychees after fertilizing.  These air layers are only about 12" tall.  Any advice?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Not impressed with Ice Cream banana
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:13:01 PM »
Well, after looking endlessly for the real Ice Cream banana I finally found it.  I then grew it to fruiting size only to have it blow over in a strong wind.  So I waited for it to grow it to fruiting size again.  It has now fruited for the second time and the bananas are ripening as we speak.  This whole process has probably taken three years.  After all this time and work and suspense all I can say is "What a let down".  The bananas really aren't that good.  The peal if very difficult to peal off.  It keeps breaking off instead of peeling off.  Once I do manage to peel the banana strings from the peel are all over the fruit.  Once I peel these off, the fruit is just OK.  It does have a lighter more creamy texture but not in a good way.  Mushy might be a better way to describe it instead of creamy.  And to add to all this the core of the fruit is firm.  It is the only banana I have ever had that I eat around the core and throw it out when done.  I have tried eating these bananas a little under ripe and a little over ripe trying to find the right timing but nothing seems to help.  I think I'm going to give the plant another chance to fruit but if I get the same result I'm going to pull it.  Right now I'm hoping that this is just a bad batch of fruit since they hung on the plant all winter.  Only time will tell.

Has anyone else had a different experience with the real Ice Cream banana?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Has anyone tried Kwa Luk Lychee?

After reading about how good and big they are supposed to be, I'm wondering why no one grows them?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / My cherries are blooming in sync!
« on: March 05, 2017, 01:05:38 PM »
My second leaf Minnie Royal and Royal Lee just started blooming together!  I'm excited. Hopefully I can taste some of these cherries this year off my own tree.  I'm excited so I had to tell someone. My wife doesn't care.

I see that Sadhu at Govardhan Gardens in Puerto Rico has two types of Garcinia Madruno.  He has a regular and sweet variety.  Has anyone tasted the sweet variety and can compare it to the regular Madruno's?  How much better is it?  Any info is appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are Garcinias true to seed?
« on: August 22, 2016, 12:56:10 AM »
What I'm trying to figure out is if seeds are obtained from a supposed superior strain of Garcinia does that mean that the seedling will have the same superior traits?  Sadhu at GOVARDHAN GARDENS has what he says is a sweet variety of Garcinia Madruno.  Is it worth trying to get seeds from this supposed superior strain?  If Garcinias aren't true to seed than seedlings from this variety could be average or subpar.  Am I correct with this reasoning?  I don't want to go thru the hassle of growing the plants from seeds if the resulting plants aren't going to carry the superior traits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this Garcinia Intermedia?
« on: August 14, 2016, 07:10:39 PM »
Hi all, Long story short I was in Costa Rica for the past 9 days and found this fruit at a fruit wholesaler.  They call it Jorco which according to Wikipedia is Garcinia Intermedia.  The description and pictures sound right except for the size of these fruit.  These on average are 1 5/8" wide by 2" long and some are a little larger.  They taste like Mangosteen but not as sweet with a slight acidity to them.  They are very addicting.  There is not a lot of flesh to them but like eating peanuts you can't stop eating one after another.  I found out where the grower is and maybe next year I will try and visit him.  I'm thinking it may be a grafted form of Intermedia since in the last couple of years  grafted variety of fruits are popular in Costa Rica.

Any ideas?  I really don't know much about the many different Garcinias and would like a little help from the more knowledgeable people.

After several years of growing my mango trees in pots I am finally planting them in the ground.  On the left are newer varieties Fruit Punch, Lemon Zest, Sweet Tart and Gary (a parent of many new Zill varieties).  On the right are oldy but goodies Edward, Maha Chanok, Southern Blush and an open spot for Dot.  I plan on following Fairchild's fertilizer and pruning advice to keep them small.

Bill

Is it an old Florida variety?  Was it imported?  Another Zill creation?  I have this tree and don't really know much about the history of it so thought I would ask.

Hi all, in Southern California how small can a regular mango tree be kept?  By regular I mean not a normally compact grower such as Pickering or Ice Cream but a regular variety such as Edward, Southern Blush or Lemon Zest.  Is seven to eight feet realistic?

Hi all, I bought a grafted Star Apple purple variety on Ebay.  I have never tasted the fruit. My wife is from Costa Rica and she said these were her favorite fruit as a kid growing up.  She really wanted me to get one so I did.  You know the saying "A happy wife is a happy life".

From reading posts in this forum and others I know they can be grown in Southern California.  I was wondering if anyone has first hand knowledge of how they grow or fruit in SoCal.  When do they fruit here?  Does the fruit properly sweeten up here? Is the tree a fast grower?

I've read that the tree is very nice looking which is good since I plan on putting it in the front yard.  I figure even if the fruit isn't very good grown here, the wife will be happy because I tried and I'll have a nice looking ornamental in the front yard.

Any info will be appreciated.

Hi All, I have a small Garcinia Achachairu but I am greedy so I'm now looking for a larger specimen.  The larger the better.  Does anyone know where I can find one in Southern California or mail order?

Thanks,

Hi Guys, After much research I have decided to plant a Sweetheart and Kaimana Lychee in my yard.  It is my understanding that Kaimana is a very slow grower here in Southern California so I would like to get as large of a tree as possible.  All the trees I have been able to find at local nurseries or online are one gallon size.  Does anyone know of a local source for large trees or a mail order source for 3 or 7 gallons?  Any help would be appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Another experience with Top Tropicals Nursery
« on: September 16, 2014, 04:24:17 PM »
Hi all, Two years ago I ordered twelve Mango trees from Top Tropicals Nursery.  This year when my Cushman fruited the fruits looked nothing like Cushmans.  Cushman fruit is round and yellow, my fruit was oblong and green that colored up to orange and red.  My Southern Blush that I received from them has Mango Malformation Disease.  Reference this posting for pictures of the flower panicles http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=12129.msg155746#msg155746 .  This disease causes trees to grow very slowly, set little fruit and it is very contagious.  Luckily the first year I noticed the flowers looked strange so I have been very careful not to spread the disease to my other trees.

I contacted Top Tropicals almost three weeks ago and talked to Heather.  She asked me to email here photos of the mislabeled Cushman tree and the diseased Southern Blush.  I did.  After not hearing back from her for several days I called and talked to her.  She agreed that the Cushman tree was mislabeled and said they would ship me a replacement.  She said that they were talking to their plant expert about the Mango Malformation Disease and they would get back to me. She told me that she had never heard of Mango Malformation Disease before.  This was shocking to me as it shows how completely clueless this Nursery is or that she is willing to lie to me to.

After not hearing from Heather for a week I started calling Top Tropicals each day.  For a week I called every day and every day I got a different excuse, "Heather is on the other line. She will call you right back.", "Heather is off today.  I'll leave her a message and have her call you first thing in the morning.", "Heather is working in the field I'll have her call you when she gets back to the office."  Needless to say I never received a return phone call.  I asked the other people that I spoke to on the phone if there was someone else I could talk to about my problem.  Each time I was told that I needed to talk to Heather.  One of the other girls that I spoke to on the phone told me that their plant expert had told them that I must have obtained the disease from one of my other trees.  I told her that this was the only tree I have with this disease and that the entire tree has the disease.  To me, if every flower on a three gallon tree has Mango Malformation Disease then it probably got it from dirty equipment when it was grafted.

After almost three weeks and with unreturned phone calls to Top Tropicals I have contacted my Credit Card and I am disputing the charges.  I also plan on reporting them to the appropriate California agricultural department.  To let them know that Top Tropicals is shipping diseased trees into California and doesn't appear to care.  I know there has been a lot of talk on this forum about different online nursery options for California.  In the past I have defended Top Tropicals and told people about the large trees I received from them.  With Top Tropicals poor communication and complete lack of responsibility for shipping me a diseased tree.  I can no longer recommend them.  For others considering ordering from them, the risk of receiving a diseased tree is simply not worth it.  This is a very contagious disease that can easily be spread.

Another unhappy Top Tropicals customer,
Bill

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this mango malformation?
« on: August 12, 2014, 11:40:50 AM »
Hi all, I have this Southern Blush in a 15 gallon pot.  Its blooms and fruit look very strange.  The blooms from earlier this year are pictured below.  They had most of the bloom at the end of the panicle in clumps.  The tree then set tons of fruit but only held one.  That fruit is now at near maturity and is very strange looking with a spike on it.  I can add pictures of the fruit later today.  I've never seen pictures of Mango Malformation but I think this tree has it just from descriptions I have heard.  Any opinions will be appreciated.

Hi all,  it's that time of year again in Southern California, Mango season!  I'm always interested in the earliest varieties in SoCal. So if you have fruit that is mature or getting close please speak up.

I know JF has been eating Glenn's and Duncan's for 2-3 weeks. Gary's season in Palm Springs has been in full swing for weeks now. How about other people or other varieties in SoCal?

Hi all,  My wife and I are trying to figure out what fruit we should add to our backyard to fill our March thru May void. We currently have Blackberries June thru August, Peaches in July and Mangos August thru November.  Then we get what I think are Satsuma Tangarines December, January or February. Then our Navel Orange ripens about January thru May. But we usually just juice those. So that leaves us with sometimes February and always March thru May with nothing to pick from the yard to eat. We are considering a different type of Mandarine since our boys love them so much and literally can eat ten or more in one day!  But before we decide I wanted to see what you guys would recommend.

I have plenty of space for blackberries against my North wall so maybe you guys know of any early variety that you would recommend. My earliest Blackberry is Kiowa which started fruiting May 30 of last year.

I also have many different varieties of Bananas and Pineapple that fruit whenever they feel like it.

Any help is appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Let me tell you about my trip to Florida
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:13:10 AM »
Well, it hasn't happened yet.  A friend and I fly into Miami this Thursday and we leave Sunday.  We have a list of many nursery and fruit stands that we are going to try and visit.  And of coarse we are trying to visit with Harry on Saturday.  Also in the line up is Pine Island, The Fruit and Spice Park, Fairchilds, Excalibur, Walter Zills and others.

The problem we have right now is we don't know of a good place to try Mangos Thursday night when we first get in.  We will arrive at about 4:30 so it will be too late to visit Pine Island Nursery, Fairchilds or The Fruit and Spice Park.  Does anyone have suggestions?

I'm getting ready to put some of my mango trees into the ground here in SoCal.  I plan on putting the more disease resistant and faster growers in the less ideal locations.  But I don't want to assume that because a tree is vigorous in Florida means it will also be here.  So please help and list off you most vigorous growers and how long it took them to reach a certain size.

Thanks in advance.

Bill
