Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Reed Avocados in April?
« on: April 05, 2018, 01:33:08 AM »
I ate one of the Reeds tonight. Though it was very very large it definitely wasn't mature yet. It tasted watery and bland. Hopefully the last fruit on the tree will hold. If not the tree is starting to bloom like crazy and I should have lots of avocados next fall.

My small Reed is just starting to bloom now and dropping it's fruit from last year.

My yard is on a drip system so water isn't an issue. I guess the tree just wants to drop them since it is young and blooming. The avocados are giant!  I hope they taste good. I'll report back.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reed Avocados in April?
« on: April 03, 2018, 04:04:13 PM »
Hi all, my two and a half year old Reed Avocado is dropping its fruit.  The tree is about ten feet tall and three or four feet diameter.  I let it hold three fruit last year and stripped the other fruits off.  Two days ago it dropped one of the fruit and today it dropped another.  The fruit are very big the first weighted over 24 ounces and the second weighted over 26 ounces.  I've read that Reed usually weight 16-20 ounces.  Is this true?  If so are these fruit dropping because they are ready?  Or are they too big for the small tree?  Any advice would be appreciated.

The first fallen fruit is getting soft and I will try it tonight.

Hi Behl, I was wondering why you recommend such a high dose of Agri-Fos and only once a year?  The directions state two teaspoons per gallon sprayed every 14 days while blooming and every 30 days when not blooming.  Due to this short interval application rate I'm assuming the systemic effect doesn't last long.

Long Beach Peach growing here in Long Beach is covered in quarter size fruit. Small parts of my Royal Lee and Minnie Royal are blooming. My Red Barron Peach is just starting to bloom. Stella Cherry is still resting.

There is also a Tango Tangerine and Reed Avocado blooming right next to the Toyal Lee. Can these cross pollinate with the Royal Lee?  Or only other stone fruits will cross pollinate with it?

There is a Long Beach peach right next to it that has been blooming. So that must be it. I didn't know that other species of fruit could provide cross pollination. I thought it had to be a cherry. So I guess I would recommend a Long Beach Peach to anyone that is having problems getting their MR RL combo to bloom together.

Good info on Dot. Thanks.

Out of curiosity what disease problems does Dot have in Florida?  I have always heard it is disease prone but nothing specific that I can remember. Is it powdery mildew?

That is a very impressive Brewster Mark. How old is it?  My Brewster is growing much faster then I thought it would. I'm going to have to give it a heavy pruning every year if I want to keep it contained to the area I have for it.

Does your tree fruit every year?

Thanks Frank, I might have to do that if my new Dot can't prove its self in our local environment. What variety is HK?

warren, now that you mention it we did have a LZ at Gary's. If I remember right it also was a little under or over ripe. I remember it had potential but I was saving judgement until I could try it again. Dot on the other hand I have had at what I would consider optimal ripeness and it is incredible. Dot in my opinion should be eaten a little under ripe. At this stage it has a lemony citrusy taste that I love. Hopefully my new Dot tree will be more disease resistant.

I have not had any fruit off this tree but I have had SoCal grown Brewsters and they are great.   Hopefully I can tell you how good these fruit are soon.

Dot is my favorite mango that I have tried. I have not tried LZ or ST. I hope my new specimen does better.

Actually I stand corrected.  I found the original picture of when I planted the tree and it was April of 2016.  So the tree is less then two years in the ground.

I bought it from Mimosa in LA.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dot mango dying in SoCal

Hi All, I thought I would share my experience growing Dot mango in SoCal.  I knew it was disease prone in SoCal but I didn't realize how weak it truly is.  I bought this Dot as a three gallon and it has been in the ground for about a year.  It has experienced consistent die back so about six months ago I started spraying it with copper and sulfur once a month.  That seems to have helped as it kept the remaining one foot plant alive threw winter.  But it has now started to die off again.  I think this is do to all the recent dew and fog.  I have not given up and I bought a seven gallon Dot to replace it.  This plant seems much more disease resistant.  I think this might be because I have been spraying it since I got it or because it is larger or because it is mislabeled and I accidently got a different more disease resistance variety.  Time will tell.  Does anyone have any advice to keep this variety alive?

Hi all, here are some pictures of my Royal Lee and Minnie Royal Cherries planted at the end of 2015.  They have grown like weeds and have been pruned back every winter.  Last year I got about 3 fruit off the Minnie Royal.  This year the Royal Lee is blooming before the Minnie Royal and it has fruit!  Strange thing is, I thought the Royal Lee needed the Minnie Royal to cross pollinate?

Hi all, I thought I would share pictures of my Brewster Lychee planted as a 15 gallon at the end of 2015.  It has grown like a weed and far exceeded my expectations as far as health and vigor.  For me it has been a very low maintenance tree.  I was planning on pruning it this weekend but discovered flowers emerging all over it!  I hope it holds fruit.

I bought five seeds of those from abimael. Unfortunately none sprouted. As far as I know it is an unidentified species. Felipe grew it as garcinia sp. Rusty.

This is a very exciting project to me. To have so many different varieties of Garcinia growing in one place here in the US is exciting.  I wish I had room to do the same thing. I can only wish.

I can't find anywhere that carries Magna-Bon.  Anyone know of a website that carries it?
