Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Grafted Mango trees for sale SoCal only
« on: September 21, 2016, 02:19:37 PM »
Hi all, I'm trying to clear some room in the backyard so I'm selling some mango trees.  For sale I have:

15 gallon grafted Rosigold Mango tree. This tree is very well developed and five feet tall from the top of the pot. This tree is known for being one of the earliest mangos of the season. $150

Cogshall Mango tree grafted in 15 gallon pot. This is a very developed tree that measures 4 feet tall from the top of the pot and about as wide.  $150

This is a very mature 7 gallon grafted Fairchild Mango Tree. It measures over four feet tall from the top of the pot and three feet wide. The trunk measures almost 2.5" wide. It is ready to go into the ground or a 15 gallon pot. $125

This is a 7 gallon Edward mango tree. It is almost 4 feet tall from the top of the pot. $75

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Achachairu: Calculating Pulp to Waste Ratio

Thanks for doing this. This is very good information. Hopefully in the future we can get numbers on other varieties of Garcinia to compare. With Achachairu becoming a commercial crop I don't think we are to far away from named grafted varieties with more pulp or sweater  taste.

This is very exciting. Amazing that a Garcinia seedling would flower that small. I'm still trying to acquire one of these so if anyone has one that they are willing to part with please contact me and I'll give you more money than it is worth. 😄👍

What does Sadhu say about the quality of the fruit?  Does anyone else have any information regarding this species?  Has anyone else in the forum tasted or seen this fruit before?

OK.  So the tree is about 25 years old and more than 24 feet tall.  How wide would you say the tree is?

And to be clear you are saying this species Rusty was not Philips favorite variety of Garcinia.  Do you know which variety was his favorite?

How old and big is the tree these fruit came from?  Of the 15 Garcinia species that Philip grew do you know which one was his favorite?

Thanks

Interesting fruit. What does the fruit taste like?  Where does it grow? Shoreline? Foothills?  Mountains?  What Does the tree look like?  There isn't much information available on this garcinia species.

Hi Roy, Are any seeds available this year?

Bill

Smaller overall fruit size then Achachairu?  I thought Madruno was 2-3" and Achachairu is 1.5-2".

I have tasted Achachairu and I loved them.  I have two small trees.  I'm interested in Madruno for variety, earlier season and strange looking fruit.  I understand it has less flesh than Achachairu but how is the taste?

Bill

Tomas since you are the only one who has tried this sweet variety, how would you compare it to Achachairu?  Or any other Garcinia for that matter. I'm trying to get some feeling for the quality of this fruit.

Thanks

All great information Raul. Thanks for the update. It's nice to hear that the fruit holds on the tree for a while. With hundreds of fruit you want to be able to enjoy it over time.

That is good information on the cold sensitivity of G Acuminata.

Thanks.

This looks like a really interesting variety of Garcinia.  Does anyone know how large the tree gets or at what size it starts fruiting?  From the pictures it looks like a rather fast growing variety.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hass Avocado as a Shade Tree?

I might be in the minority here but I love big avocado shade trees. I have a sharwil in my backyard that I plan on letting get as big as it wants. Avocados are a great fruit that is impossible to have too many of. Everyone on your block will be willing to take any extras you may have.

I'm no expert but I believe that most people think his tree is a strain of Garcina Acuminata.

I see that Sadhu at Govardhan Gardens in Puerto Rico has two types of Garcinia Madruno.  He has a regular and sweet variety.  Has anyone tasted the sweet variety and can compare it to the regular Madruno's?  How much better is it?  Any info is appreciated.

Ok.  So I guess my question now is has anyone tried the Madruno sweet variety that Sadhu is growing?  If so how much better is it?

Bill

122
So if they are seven feet wide at four feet tall then how wide are the trees that are eight and six feet tall?  Pictures I've seen on the internet show trees taller than wide but that is not what you guys are describing.

Everything at my house has been doing great!  The summer started slow but everything is growing well now.

Bill

Mine are only 18" tall and get full sun up until about 1pm. They are doing great with nice green healthy leaves. They grow very slow but they are happy. I'm only a couple miles from the beach so my morning sun might be less intense than other people who have less marine influence.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are Garcinias true to seed?
« on: August 22, 2016, 12:56:10 AM »
What I'm trying to figure out is if seeds are obtained from a supposed superior strain of Garcinia does that mean that the seedling will have the same superior traits?  Sadhu at GOVARDHAN GARDENS has what he says is a sweet variety of Garcinia Madruno.  Is it worth trying to get seeds from this supposed superior strain?  If Garcinias aren't true to seed than seedlings from this variety could be average or subpar.  Am I correct with this reasoning?  I don't want to go thru the hassle of growing the plants from seeds if the resulting plants aren't going to carry the superior traits.
