Temperate Fruit Discussion / My cherries are blooming in sync!
« on: March 05, 2017, 01:05:38 PM »
My second leaf Minnie Royal and Royal Lee just started blooming together!  I'm excited. Hopefully I can taste some of these cherries this year off my own tree.  I'm excited so I had to tell someone. My wife doesn't care.

Looks good frank. I'm eating the last of my Tango mandarines now. My one year old tree produced about 50 fruit!

According to Gary at Laguna Hills Nursery in Southern California Citrus grown by the coast is harder to peel with a thinner skin. So what you are experiencing is normal. If you haven't read is website it is a good read with good information regarding growing fruit in Southern California specifically.

The new ziager low chill Cherry 6gm25 is available now. It was just released this year. You should be able to get it bareroot now. It is supposed to be low chill like Minnie Royal and Royal Lee and delicious. It is also self fertile.

The Rosigold is sold so I only have the Cogshall left.

This is really sad. It is scary how many different foreign insects are attacking native trees in California.

Very nice summary. Thanks for the info.

Champa nursery in El Monte has many 15 gallon lychees. I don't know what varieties they have now but last year they had many Mauritius.

Joehewitt, interesting what you say about the underdeveloped seeds in some of the fruit. The Achachairu I had all had fully formed seeds. But the fruit I had were more ripe with an orange color. Maybe that is the difference. Do you know how large the tree is that these fruit came off?  How tall and wide?

Very nice. So how tall and wide is this bushy tree?

Hi Alan, More Garcinias right here in Long Beach?  That is exciting.  Right now I have Brasilensis, Gardneriana, Dulcis, Achachairu and Lucs. Most are very small. My largest is a two foot tall Achachairu followed by a foot and a half tall Lucs. I also have some Garcinia sp. Rusty seeds that I'm waiting to sprout. How about you?  I saw pics of your Lucs and that appears larger then mine.

What is the largest known Achachairu in California?  The largest I know of is franks that I think is six feet?
I'm under the impression they start fruiting at about ten feet tall.

Ethan, how large is yours in a pot?  After eight years does it still seam happy in a pot?

So what is everyone's opinion on the Sweet Cliff Lychees?

Edward and Fairchild are sold.

That's a nice looking Cogshall Frank.  Trust me if I had the room I would keep mine but I think 11 varieties is enough.  I need room for Garcinias!

Gary, you are the best. My trees and backyard are doing great!  Hopefully I'll have some different varieties to contribute to the tasting next year. I think I'll post some pictures of the yard soon.

I have had these the last two years I was in Costa Rica.  There is a nursery there that sells grafted three foot tall trees for $50!  The fruit is very very good. Tastes exactly like a tangerine mangosteen. I was very excited about this fruit until I read on the internet some where that it dies at 40F. I hope you guys have greenhouses.

These are Florida grafted so should be Turpentine or what ever they decided to use.
