Damn I'm in the wrong country.

Raul has melicoccus oliveformis which is similar to talisia oliveformis. Maybe he can help. They are all closely related.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rambutan pollen
« on: April 30, 2017, 08:50:02 PM »
I have three korlan trees, theyre not big enough to flower yet but are growing at a fast rate, im hoping in a year or so they will start. I want to try hybridising them with rambutan. Korlan are self fertile and more cold hardy but the fruit is smaller and less sweet. Id like to get some rambutan/pulusan genes in there and see if I can get sime more flavorful offspring. Howeverhave had little luck finding a mature male rambutan or pulusan to purchase. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to store/post pollen of these plants and how to collect it? Im hoping to find someone in qld or the nt with a mature tree and get them to send me some when mine start to fruit.

Old post I know, Sadly I didn't get seeds from my contact as he wasnt in town during the last three fruiting seasons. However rarepalmseeds listed them so I took a chance and thanks to the help of another forum member obtained a few. Due to my previous experience with rarepalmseeds seed being a reseller and the seed age being unknown I soaked the seeds in GA3 to try kick start them. Theyre certainly less vigorous than my lemon gold seedlings. Heres a pic of the most vigorous.

Im hoping once these ones and a few others fruit, some may make their way back to (western) Australia. 😎

Your right I think bestday, all the literature I can find say they're of spanish/italian origin. Do you know if any of the people growing it has one large enough to sell/share some budwood?

No, its a selection of longan, first seen in vietnam a few years ago. Though there may be more than one selection  most trees are clones. Not sure theyd come true from seed.

Yup, I google translated it. I grow a few aussie natives here that are rare, also a quite a few exotics that are also endangered including chrysophyllum imperiale. Got them from the sydney botanical gardens.  Sad to see these trees chopped down to make cheap furniture or paper. Stupid really.

Id suggest your only chance (its slim) is mikeT. He doesn't sell but may trade if you have something good. I think there are others with seedlings but it will be a while before they have seeds.

A couple of reasons, firstly I feel the same way about pouteria as Adam feels about plinia 😆. I am trying to collect alot of them. Partly because I think they have more to offer than whats out there, but secondly alot of them are rare in their natural habitat. I found this description:
http://revistaatajo.com/la-totuma.html
And it sounds similar to canistel/lucuma. But it might have characteristics that give it an advantage where I am.
