How can everyone's pitangatubas be flowering now and not mine?? Back to E. luschnathiana, I wonder why some are not fruiting while others are when they are about 6-8 ft tall. I know someone with such large E. luschnathiana and it has never even flowered.

E. candolleana. I think there are not many E. species without a sour edge.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My Fruit Brix Results

Hi,

Good idea. Maybe you could add a little reference to the Brix values of standard fruits so people have something to compare to, like brix for a lemon etc.

Oscar,

Do you know if Garcinia sizygiifolia is monoecious?

I have had many seed shipments with just moist paper around the seeds, in a sealed bag. That has worked good too.

Recipes / Re: How to make Liquid Stevia extract
« on: February 20, 2012, 10:23:09 PM »
Hi nullzero,

This is really really great information! I have jars with dried leaves from my stevia plants. I will certainly try your recipe. Does the liquid stevia solution (after alcohol extraction)  taste the same as raw stevia leaves?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My Cambuca (Plinea edulis) tree!
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:55:12 PM »
Hi,

I know someone how has 14 cambuca trees. He told me a long time ago that about 2-3 trees out of the 15 trees started fruiting lightly in 3-4 years. Also, under perfect conditions they can fruit twice a year.

Hi,

I just ate some Kari carambolas and they were so sweet and good.  Is Kari the sweetest varieties around?

I think there are many Eugenia species that are virtually unknown to most people that deserve more attention.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: grafting Garcinias
« on: February 07, 2012, 02:33:28 PM »
Hi,

Very good information! Thanks. I was mostly thinking about grafting Garcinia because sometimes you find that one-in-a-million tree with fruits
to die for. Maybe not all Garcinia species have a noticeable variation, but I have learned that some Garcinias do.

Hi Adam,

With "each other" you mean any Garcinia would more or less work to graft with any other Garcinia as rootstock, or do you mean grafting onto the same species?

Hello,

Does anyone know what works and what doesn't work in terms of rootstock selection for Garcinia species? I am particilarly interested in rootstock compability of these Garcinias:

G. madruno
G. prainiana
G. mangostana
G. macrophylla
achachairu
Mexican garcinia

Thanks in advance for any help.

I can highly recommend Jeff's place. I visited his nursery today. He is really friendly and helpful. I am now a happy owner of Pickering and Lemon Zest! Fruit-wise I should soon be able to impress most people with these excellent mangoes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What tropical fruits impress normal people?
« on: February 03, 2012, 09:07:32 AM »
Great to hear from you all! It sounds like I cannot go wrong with some really tasty mangoes to add to my collection. I actually have been thinking about that for a while. I do have one Mallika but the person who sold it to me didn't tell me about the proper ripening procedure so the first fruits tasted really bad. And last year all the fruit fell off. This year I hope I will have some GOOD Mallika. I also I forgot about my small cambuca trees. I think those fruits will please most people.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What tropical fruits impress normal people?
« on: February 02, 2012, 09:27:39 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have been pondering lately if I am growing the right kinds of plants (about 50 different species). If I take away all the personal satisfaction of actually growing a rare fruit plant, when it comes time to eat the fruit and especially sharing fruits with "normal" people who are not fanatic or devoted like me to tropical fruits I have many times been a little disappointed that others don't appreciate the fruits as I do. Is this all because I have become attached to my plants too much
and that subconsciously it makes me believe that the fruit tastes great? So I have been thinking that maybe there is more to it than just happily growing rare fruits. Perhaps what I want ideally is to actually impress people with my fruits to make them want to grow them too. So far that hasn't happened, with one
exception and that is jaboticaba (that jaboticaba jam is heaven! - and someone here knows exactly what I am talking about).  I am glad I have a few different varieties of jaboticaba growing. Also I have high hopes that my Achachairu and the Mexican Garcinia will be a great fruit for "common people".

Anyone with ideas/comments?

Tomas

Hi Kevin,

Glad to hear that there are others that also enjoy cloudberries. I Sweden where I grew up they grow in the semi-swampy bog and you pick them in August. You have to be equipped with 3 things to pick cloudberries: tall boots, bug spray, and an alert eye for bears.  They only grow in the Northern part of Sweden. Too hot in the southern Sweden for cloudberries. Imagine that. Anyway, you asked about growing cloudberries in containers. Yes you can do that and there are different cultivares too to choose from. There are places in Sweden that sell cloudberries in pots but I have never tried myself.

Hello Søren,

Do you know if Strychnos spinosa and Strychnos cocculoides are any good taste-wise? I have read that the fruit with its hard shell can be stored for months. It would be interesting to try to grow them.

Lets pretend berries are fruits too for a moment so I can mention cloudberries. I could eat myself sick on those right off the bushes. The best fruit/berry ever, with a complex out-of-this-world sour flavor.  After that comes mango and all that jazz than everyone else has listed.
