Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: germinating abiu seeds: is it right?

Hello huertasurbanas,

I don't know what's recommended for Abiu, but I kept all my abiu plants in full shade for the first couple of months.

Hi huertasurbanas,

I am a little late replying... I don't think it's that important how you plant the abiu seeds. I experimented some and as long as the part with the root is below soil level the seed with germinate well. Here are some pictures I took last year. It's about 10 days between the pictures.

Hi Keith,

I am like you - I still don't have a proper greenhouse set up. Last winter I had my plants inside the garage with a heater. I was surprised how well all the plants fared. Glad you are going to see Adam. I haven't visited his nursery myself yet.

Hi Keith,

That's a mighty good collection of plants you have, and even more impressive is that you live in North Carolina. I am trying my best to grow some tropical and subtropical plants up here in Virginia. I also got some plants from Adam.

Lucky you! Do you know the difference between Molina #4 and Molina #1? It would be interesting to know.

The fruit is not that juicy,  so it will not drip when you open the fruit. I think it would be hard to open without a knife. I never tried that.

Hello RICBITAR,

Sorry. I cannot compare with mangosteen because I have never eaten mangosteen. It had very good taste, 100% sweet and no hint at all of any sourness. Here are some pictures of the fruit I ate:

That's really odd with white leaves. I would think without much chlorophyll in the leaves they cannot absorb the necessary energy. Mine have no leaves yet so I cannot tell.

Hello bangkok,

I have eaten the sweet madroņo fruits. As as matter of fact right from Sadhu's trees. I can tell you that this variety is very nice and sweet. I have not tried the other type.

Hi Cassio,

I think the trick is to have the correct formula of the soil mix. Here is what e-jardim wrote me some years back about growing M. nana successfully:

----------
- germination in pure silica sand
- grow them in pots, 40% coarse sand + 40% fine sand + 20% clay or another soil;  the substrate should be well drained and acid pH side.
- provide as much light as possible

Under these conditions, it will grow very well (and fast). Chemical fertilization is harmful. If needed, use 1/3 of normal dosage of Osmocote or another slow releasing.
----------

Good luck!

Tomas

Great detective work Adam! I hope someday someone can present a comparison chart with these similar Myrciaria species with leaf and fruit pictures side by side.

Tomas

Hi Cassio,

This one is really hard to grow compared to all other Myrciaria species I have grown. Ask at e-jardim.com - they may be able to help you.

Hi huertasurbanas,

I don't think that would be a dwarf type. My seedling dwarf cashew flowered at about 2 ft (about 1/2 meter) tall.

Hi Adam,

I saw you just wondered...

I cannot get the rarefruit yahoo group anymore so I think it has shut down.

Hello huertasurbanas,

Very nice cashew seedlings! Since you will be growing them in pots, you may want to try to find seeds of the dwarf variety of the cashew. It may fruit when just a few feet tall. Mine flowered at that stage.

Hi Omar,

Your seedling looks really nice and healthy. What kind of soil do you use?

Wow greeny! That amazing that you have those species fruiting in Germany. I assume you have insects flying around in your greenhouse for pollination?

Hi Mike,

A have been told that your seeds of D. macrantha have sprouted in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Portugal. So I would say that your effort and desire to distribute this rarity has paid off. I applaud you.
