Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: THAI DWARF VS WORLDS BEST MULBERRY
« on: August 08, 2020, 07:22:24 AM »
I have not seen any Worlds Best mulberry fruit or tree, but for me the Thai Dwarf seems to fruit more than the other types I grow. If you have the Worlds Best or have access to it, I wouldn't mind trading a few scions with you. I have the following on my trees; Black Pakistan, White Pakistan, Shangri-La, Thai Dwarf, Contorted mulberry.

I top worked one of my mulberry tree with Thai Dwarf this spring and had fruits on them already. Taste is ok, nothing exciting, the Black Pakistan or the Shangri-La tastes better to me.

The nice thing about it is the growth habit, leaf nodes are spaced closer together so it seems to be more bushy even though it grows fast and long.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: white sapote leaf tea
« on: August 04, 2020, 02:00:57 PM »
I looked up info from google search and some people have used the leaves for making tea (Daily's Fruit forum). Here's some info on casimiroa leaves.

Dried Casimiroa Leaves - Plantation Collection, this is from "Tropical Fruit World".

If you buy this for $12.95 it looks like on the back there is instructions on making herbal tea with it (see photos).

Received my scions in great condition again, thanks Frank.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Makok

hawkfish007, thanks for the info, I will need to check them out.
I do have both the Alano and Makok about the same size (5ft tall), and the Alano does have many fruits each year while the Makok has flowered but never had fruits on it. I purchased my Alano from Papaya tree (Alex), and agree with palingkecil that the Alano is productive.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Branch split due to weight of fruit
« on: July 28, 2020, 03:05:55 PM »
Looks like my valentine pomelo branch that broke last year just like yours  (fruits are 1-2 lbs each), because the branch had 8 fruits. I just removed all the fruits (weight) from the broken branch, then placed the cracked branch back into position and added some heavy duty tape (1") and wrapped it up. Now the branch healed and I have fruits on it again. Same thing happened with my Sanbokan lemon. Both healed fine after I tape it up (see photos). But if you don't tape it back up within a day or so it may be too late for cambium to mend back.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Persimmon air layering ?

I have a follow up question for you. How do nursery propagate rootstocks, is it always from seeds or can the rootstock be grown from cuttings ?

Sorry, done for this year.

Brad, you got it, no secret. Make sure to cover it with foil so no heat/sun gets to the roots.

Thanks Brad.
Mike, yes I'm sure I could have removed the air layer sooner (4months) but since it was my first avo air layer, I just let it go longer to make sure it had plenty of roots. The trees (2) are doing good now after a month in pot, still have one fruit left that is growing. I also did lychee air layers (14) and if you let it go to 6 months it will have more roots which makes it better when you pot it.

Well the rootstock for my air-layers (multi-grafted tree) was from my Hawaiian seedling tree that has been in-ground for about 10yrs so I don't think there will be any problem with root disease or fungus. My tree is over 15ft and I cut it back every year since it grows so well. Only reason I needed to dig it up/remove it was because I planted it to close to a block wall.

Air layering avo seems easy to me. Just leave it for 6 months and it puts root. I didn't want to dig up a large tree that needed to be removed so air layer was a good option. Got 2 out of 3 to work. One was 6 ft tall (1" branch) Hawaiian seedling, other was 8 ft tall (2" branch) jan boyce with some fruits. Probably will take a few more 2" branches before cutting down the mult-grafted tree. Much faster than lychee air layer.

I used plastic soda container, here's some photos of my Jan Boyce (about 8ft air layer).

This will be the last cuttings of the loquats for this year.

1. KT1- "Kosmic" : Cost is $8 each (scion diameter 1/4"-3/8", length 6-8" with 3 leaf nodes) plus shipping
This is my 15yr old seedling loquat that has white/yellow flesh and it is very sweet. If you pick the fruit when it first turns yellow it will have some tartness. When fully ripe it is very sweet with no acid/tartness.
Tree is very productive and consistent ever year with tons of fruits. Sometimes when we have winds, my branches will break off due to the amount of fruits hanging.
Fruit size is medium, tree is strong grower, fruits on each branch (see photos).
This is one of my top 3 white/yellow flesh loquats.

2. Vista White (white flesh): Cost is $4 each (scion diameter 1/4"-3/8", length 6-8" with 3 leaf nodes) plus shipping.

3. Big Jim (orange flesh) : Cost is $4 each (scion diameter 1/4"-3/8", length 6-8" with 3 leaf nodes) plus shipping.

4. Shipping cost is $8.30, USPS priority mail, small flat rate box.

I take Paypal payment only.
Please send PM if you are interested in purchasing. Here's some photos from last years crop. Last photo from this years fruit.
Sale is for contiguous USA only.
