Oscar, I'm at the bottom of Hawaiian Acres. Yes, I did plant them.  All of them are grafted trees from either David Frenz or Plant It Hawaii.  Any fruits not sold at Hilo Market are sent to Chinatown in Oahu, where there is apparently an insatiable appetite for them.

Well, Pulasan seem less likely to be pollinated on Big Island than Rambutan does.  Other growers I've talked with agree.  Is that not your experience?

Size comparison with seelengkeng rambutan.  These green haired fruits are far and away the best tasting rambutan, in my opinion.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sibabat Pulasan
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:15:29 PM »
When perfectly ripe these fruit are one of my very favorites.  They need to be purple, rather than red, for optimum ripeness though they are not bad when a bit green. Unfortunately, the Pulasan tends to produce many flat fruits devoid of flesh here on the Big Island.  These were harvested during a pruning rampage.

At the market.  I just couldn't eat them all!   The evil looking durians in the back that the guy is looking at are from someone else, an inferior variety that commands half the price of mine in the box.

One of the biggest fruits, 10 plus pounds.  D-123 (Maybe)

Here are a few recent photos.  First, a field shot.

I did this for a couple of my fruit recently and came up with approximately 15% for both.  They're supposedly D-123, though the nurserymen here on the Big Island admit that there was some confusion (attributed to the Australian end, of course) when our durian cultivars originally came from Australia, so not sure what they are.  Excellent fruit, IMO, and very much in demand at farmer's market at $4/lb retail.

Interesting. I thought the Pace was superior in flavor even to the Pantin. The flavor of the pace is astounding; it has a sweet caramel flavor...

In that case, I'm looking forward to mine getting big enough to produce.  I love Pantin.  My only other tree is a Magana, which is terrible IMO-at least grown on Windward Hawaii.

I know of producing trees on the Big Island that aren't fertilized at all.  Not mine though.  I give them pelletized chicken manure and organic cal/mag.

Bret bought a raw parcel of land on the island of Hawaii in 1991 and has been returning there twice a year for a few weeks ever since.  Someday, hopefully within  5 years, I will be able to spend much more time there.  My place includes two cabins, one mostly finished and the other unfinished.  A meager solar system provides power and abundant rainfall is collected in catchment tanks.  I've planted a lot of palms and bamboo, but the primary focus is on fruit.  My orchard includes citrus, avocado, abiu, longan, rambutan, pulasan, mamey sapote, Ross sapote, langsat, caimito, soursop, jackfruit, jaboticaba, sapodilla, chocolate sapote, one mangosteen that just started fruiting last year and, best of all, several fruiting durians.  I will be travelling there over the holidays, and have been informed that there are over 150 big durians hanging above, just starting to drop, along with longan, citrus, avocado, pulasan and rambutan.  Can't wait!  Not many good photos right now, will try to get some this trip.  Here's a crappy one. You can see a pulasan straight ahead, and a star apple to the left.

Did you talk to someone at the store?  I would want to ask why a Florida based business is selling a Lychee that has not proven to fruit in Florida. >:(

They are readily available in Hawaii at just about any time of the year, but I believe fruit fly concerns prohibit shipment to the mainland.  Will check into it.

Adam
My Pedelai (A sericicarpus) is almost 5 feet tall. It's in a 15gal pot and doing great. I know it won't fruit but it's a beautiful tree anyway

Noel,

I wonder how long you could keep it in a pot (smaller than 60 gal)...by pruning the roots, and the canopy...like a giant bonsai tree?

it would be lots of work, but the tree would be amazing! even if it didn't fruit.

The large pots sound like a good idea to pursue.  As mentioned, they get too darn big in Hawaii.  The Grimal tree in Florida looks to be a nice size though.

Don't feel good about leaving a few out, but I'll go with: Durian, Pulasan, Mango, White Pineapple, Raspberry.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best SourSop Variety for Location
« on: December 15, 2014, 11:10:17 AM »
As of December 2014, after a summer.

Looked much happier when you got it.   Is it just the colder season, or would it appreciate a larger container?  Lots of people grow this fruit from seed in Hawaii, and they all seem to produce good fruit.   But then, I've never tried one of the improved, fiber less varieties.

198
Any chance you have propagated that seedless strawberry guava? I haven't heard of that before and would love to get my hands on one!

Where I work we have several very old strawberry Guava and I have planted the seeds from them every year for 10 years and not one germinated. There is not one volunteer anywhere near these trees or for blocks around. I'm thinking they are somehow sterile? And the Fla dept of Ag says these are "invasive" ???

Yes, they are quite invasive in windward Hawaii locations such as mine, and the fruit has a very short shelf life.  Tasty though.  The Mangosteen produces good fruit from seed.  It's an asexual plant, so no pollination occurs. Also, guanabana from seed is good.

Yes, it can be quite good.  Go for the wrapped, containerized flesh rather than the whole fruits.
