Just visited today a fruit collector here in NC who planted hundreds of tropical and subtropical fruit trees mainly from seeds he brought back from his different trips he has made over the last 50 years ( south america and asia mainly ). Problem is that he is getting old now and he forgot most names and localities he got them from. I took pictures of some of them flowering or fruiting and I hope someone could help me to identify some of them.

Here is a first one I don't know anything about except that fruits are nice and tasty from owner's sayings ? He is flowering at the moment and should fruit within the next weeks ? I should be able to take pictures of the fruits as well in a near future. But may be some experts could identify that specie without seeing the fruits ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia puat

My 1 year old seedlings of Garcinia puat, one of the very few interesting New  Caledonian endemic fruit tree in terms of edibility and taste. One can make delicious jelly/jam with the fruits.

Picture of the fruit :

For those interested I should be able to supply seeds and seedlings pretty soon. Trade only.

Thanks Alex, no idea, but I reckon it was planted as it seems to be near by a mango tree and a small building too ? I will check this out carefully as soon as it will be fruiting. Thanks for your help. Vincent

It is a friend of mine who got that tree. She is supposed to keep me informed when fruiting. I will post pictures of the fruits. She said they look like cherries ?

What would be the best way to multiply it ?

Thank you in advance !

Dear Friends,

I am in Vanuatu at the moment and internet is really bad here. We are lost in the middle of no where…lol I will be back home in New Caledonia this coming week end and I will take some time to write and post a brief report about new caledonian endemic fruit species as many of you emailed me to get info and seeds. Briefly I would say that we have many very interesting and kind of unique fruit species in New Caledonia including some that have not been discovered yet for sure, they look quite spectacular for some of them, but fruits are not really good and tasty in general… except may be for a couple of them. The main problem is that most species/areas/biotops are locally protected now and it is then complicate to get access to some of them in the wild. The positive point is that due to the mining industry, and their impact on the biotops, many local nurseries are now into multiplying and saving endemic flora including many of those fruit species. So I can get access to some of them just visiting a couple of specialized nurseries I know pretty well. More infos this week end. All the best, Vincent.

Hard to say as I have bought many seeds from so many different suppliers last year but not from Jim West as he simply did not replied to my emails/ order… so it is definitely not from him.

Here is another one I completely lost its data slip. Just no idea of what it is. Old seed that finally germinated like a year later…
What is sure is that it is a tropical/subtropical fruit tree specie. Any help more than welcome as I don't have a clue for that one.

It comes from Sri Lanka. Fruits bought at a local market. A friend of mine brought me back some seeds and some of them have germinated. Problem is that I am not sure about the id. I think it is a flacourtia specie, but which one ? any help welcome, thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself
« on: March 05, 2015, 11:08:39 PM »
Hi all.  I am Vincent, I am 42 years old, married, one daughter and living in New Caledonia ( S.W Pacific ). I own and run a fishing company and I have been diving/collecting seashells for many years. About 6 years ago my wife and myself have bought a beach front property south of Noumea  where some fruit trees were already planted. Huge mango trees, pomelos, guavas, various citrus, avocado, etc… I was not into fruits at all before, but a few years ago my wife wanted to get a goji plant. So I went to all the local nurseries but was unable to get her one as the specie simply could not be found in nc. Hard to believe but true….So I went to the internet to buy one and by the way I discovered web sites offering so many different fruit seeds, trees etc.... I was just amazed to see how many different fruits exist. I made a first order online, ordering "classics", then a second, a third, etc… and 6 years later I am just crazy about fruit trees…lol .I own now about a hundred different species and subspecies and I just run out of space. Most of the species I acquired over the last 2 years are still in pots and I am now looking for some more land ( not sea shore anymore, but more in the forest…lol ) to plant more and more different fruit trees. I am also into bees now and I am thinking about creating an orchard/collection in a really nice place more in the mountain to show to the public, including hives, bungalows to accommodate tourists, etc...  I'm new to the forum but have been lurking for a while picking up great information and making great new contacts. I am also always interested by new species/subspecies/varieties I still don't have. I mainly buy but can also trade a few things including an endemic fig specie which is really tasty. If you come over to New Caledonia, please do not hesitate to contact me, it will be a pleasure to show you my collection. All the best, Vincent, vitiga@canl.nc

I have ordered many seeds from Vitor earlier in January and they all arrived in great condition although they had to be sent to France first during winter time and then re sent to New Caledonia where I live ( took more than a month to arrive ). However the germination rate is just impressive and more than 80% already germinated. One of my best order for years ! Thanks to Vitor I have added more than 20 new fruit species to my collection ! great and rare species ! I could not find anywhere else ! Just perfect and I highly recommend Vitor ! ++++++++ What is sure is that I will order as many new species he will offer me in the future ! Fruit lover from Hawaii is also a really good source with great germination rate ! They are the two best sources I have found so far ! Thank you Vitor !

« on: February 27, 2015, 07:21:54 AM »
Hello,
I can supply fresh seeds and scions of Ficus habrophylla. It is an endemic fig tree of New Caledonia. Tasty reddish fruits and superb tree with large dark green leaves.
Don't know how to insert pictures here but I can email pictures of both fruits and tree on request to your email address for those who would be interested.
Trade only against other seeds and/or scions of tropical and subtropical fruits I don't have or in limited number in my collection.

May be James West can help you. Although I did not get any reply from him so far, he seems to grow and collect a lot of different tropical  fruits. Check his website at guaycuyacu.net
