How do y'all keep your garcinias happy? I have a few planted out, some on irrigation some not, all around 3ft tall. My understanding is mine are at the size when they should start growing like crazy, but they basically haven't done anything the last 6 months. Any tips?

In my experience, it's not a problem. When heavy winds come through my yard all the trees sway except for the jaboticaba which doesn't move AT ALL. They have some really strong wood. Actually a problem with jaboticabas is they can be completely uprooted in severe hurricane force winds because the trees have absolutely no give. There are a few mature jabos growing on their sides in FL because of that.

I would not let wind factor into your decision.

Second blooms on my two big trees: Haden and Glenn. The Glenn set a ton of fruit on the first bloom and has a ton of new blooms now. My ~10 Zill's varieties all bloomed and set fruit but I'm not letting them carry fruit this year.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll go ahead and plant my largest one (~2.5ft) now. Full sun, irrigated, flood prone in rainy season. I'll be devastated if it dies. Can't wait to try this fruit!

Any opinions on full sun/part shade/full shade? Also do these grow more wide than tall like Achachairu?

I'm too scared to put any in the ground as I don't want to lose them!

I believe that would be passiflora decaisneana. The fruit are incredibly sweet but they do need to be cross pollinated with another passiflora.

I think you could definitely do this with mangoes. Get a load of fresh mulch from a tree company and mulch the trees real heavy after planting. The mulch will help retain moisture and keep the ground temperature down.

Welcome to SWFL. Check out Collier Fruit Growers its a great local club for hobbyists. Someone there might be willing to come check on your trees every once in a while to see how they're doing.

I would advise NOT planting seeds. They can take a decade to bear fruit. Get a few grafted trees instead.

Kill them all. They are just as bad if not worse than pythons. Especially in the keys where they destroy the young wildlife growing in the mangroves.

Oh boy, this ones a doozy...

My understanding is there is no real logic to the various botanical names, but the most correct one is plinia jaboticaba . I believe this is the botanical name used in Frutas no Brasil.

HOWEVER, I almost never see that name used in nurseries. Most common around me seems to be myrciaria cauliflora and myrciaria jaboticaba

I'm curious to hear from the experts on this one.

Banana plants in a "mat" (group of bananas) are connected together underground by the "corm". The corm is where the new banana pups come from. When you separate a pup from the mother plant, you need to cut away part of the corm as well. Do not snip the pup at the base!

You can separate a pup at any size, but for your first few times let it grow up a bit first.

Not saying this is the case here, but there are sour varieties of carambola that you pick green and use in cooking.

Got my first red jabo today! I think its close to fruiting size. What do you guys think about my plan to nurse it back to health?

-Upgrade to 15gal pot
-50/50 sphagnum/soil mix + perlite
-Holly-tone on top

Any advice? My other jabos are in the ground so I’m not very familiar with keeping them in pots

You can definitely grow peaches in 9b, but in order to get consistent fruiting you MUST get enough chill hours every year. People are growing low chill peaches commercially in central FL and if the winter isn't cold enough it cuts production by three quarters. Peach trees also need to be replaced every 7-8 years, so missing a couple fruiting seasons really sucks.

While I'm at it here is a totally different tree (Pickering) which has been stuck in a 3 gal pot for longer than I would like due to the heavy rains.

Hi all, I just came into care of this tree a few months ago. I'm suspecting there are multiple problems here so I wanted to get the experts opinion on what cocktail to solve it with. From browsing this thread it looks like sooty mold + anthracnose. The fruit set this year was poor and almost all fruit was damaged. I don't know the cultivar (Haden?) so I attached a picture of the tree if anyone can ID it. Thanks in advance.
