So have pretty much and sadly limited my open planting areas, and only have swale space left. there are some lines about 20ft up, and prefer to not have to heavily prune. Anything else besides a low vigor mango?? Just looking for ideas. Thanks

« on: August 24, 2017, 07:31:06 PM »
Anyone have any leads on a larger (prefer 15 gallon) red jaboticaba in South East Florida, basically want to fast forward into something that is already fruiting size.

I live in Hollywood, and acquired a few more trees, so getting rid of my lisa atemoya. It has been in ground about year and a half or so I wanna say. I have a plastic nursery pot that should suffice for transport. Anyone interested pm me, you dig it up and its yours. I know survival may be sketchy, but why not try at least. If not it will be removed anyways in near future.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Watering mango trees
« on: May 16, 2017, 09:45:40 PM »
Right now my mango trees are doing OK, but I feel they could do better.  Most water they get is from sprinklers, have been debating of running direct flex tubing and bubblers to the base of the trees to give them more direct watering 3 days a week (when sprinklers go on).  Only have my CC that bloomed this year so have 4 others to experiment with.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multi variety Mango trees
« on: July 26, 2016, 07:32:00 PM »
Anyone in Broward county done this? My list of trees are PPK, CC, Fairchild, pickering and honey kiss. running out of room and would like to add maybe one or 2 more varieties that may do well if grafted (finding someone to do it is a whole other issue LMAO). Would love to get Maha and open to other recommendations of trees with similar vigor as mine (as mentioned by Rob would be best). Thoughts..........

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black spots on sugar apples
« on: May 27, 2016, 03:13:46 PM »
have these on young sugar apples. Anything can help stop it? First decent crop and now this.  UGH!! it has destroyed a few small fruit, some larger fruit have small are but fear it will spread. Picture is what I found on line but no info as to what it is and what can be done to treat.

It has had issue after issue and bout to rip it out of the ground.  Last time it was suggested that maybe potato leaf hoppers, sprayed with Sevin, got better. Now it has gone back to the same leaf curling and looks like crap again. Only tree in the yard with any issues. Fert once a month 8-3-9, water is good. Even did a Fe drench a few months ago. Any suggestions before I scrap my rollinia project?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for trees under 15ft
« on: October 04, 2015, 11:28:59 AM »
So running out of space, have some swal area I can plant about 3-4 trees. Trying to take full advantage of land. What kind I plant that will be easy to maintain 10-15 ft with pruning, but that don't need HEAVY pruning at the risk of fruit loss.  Considering longans, lychee, late season mango, avocado.  The power line is about 20-25ft or so trying to keep plenty of clearance.  Open to suggestions too.  Have one spot left for big avocado that I am waiting to eventually get at Excalibur.  So down to this last strip of land   :'( :'( :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia very chlorotic, suggestions???
« on: September 28, 2015, 09:24:47 PM »
The only tree/plant in my yard that is chlorotic is my Rollinia.  Have not watered at all since we have been getting a lot of rain recently. So she has been getting rain atleast every 3 days, sometimes daily.  Last fert with 8-3-9 almost 2 months ago. Any suggestions? Is it too much rain for her that is causing the yellow? Everything else is lush and green and growing in leaps and bounds. She is flowering and put on a good flush of leaves, but she has definitely been my problem tree since I got her LOL

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB Lisa Atemoya
« on: September 25, 2015, 09:59:39 PM »
I know it is a long shot, but looking to take a few years off the fruiting wait, anyone selling a larger Lisa Atemoya tree?  I have a source for small ones (Bender). Looking for true 7 or 15 gallon sized.

12
Finally got my hands on some Lisa Atemoyas thanks to Bender.  I am definitely going to plant one LOL.  Soooooo good, even though I am a fan of my kampong mauve sugar apples, this blows em away. Especially since more to eat. Do these grow true to seed?  These had a good flesh to seed ratio. Thanks Mike.

What the latest you have pruned and still had good fruit set?  Scenario is I am trying to keep/maintain 2 mango trees (PPK and Coco Cream) somewhere in the 10-15ft range. I have pruned twice already, getting good outward growth vs vertical.  Just curious as to what is the recommended latest time to prune.  I was advised Septemberish for last fertilizing before flowering, can I sneak in one more pruning now?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Free jackfruit
« on: August 02, 2015, 11:09:42 AM »
Have one maybe 2 whole jackfruits to give away.  Pick up in Hollywood today or tomorrow latest as they are ready to eat.  Gunnar was generous enough to just offer to give me DF cutting so gonna pay it forward and give away these jacks.  Waiting to hear from one forum member who was interested, so have one for sure to give away. If more than 2 people want will cut in halves.  Let me know asap

Acquired too much jackfruit so interested in trading for either american beauty or haileys comet cuttings. Local in Broward county might drive to Palm Beach, but only available today and tomorrow.  Don't know variety, it is a milder tasting jackfruit.  Will also trade weight for weight for certain mangoes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with mango ID for a friend
« on: July 18, 2015, 12:05:23 PM »
Have a friend trying to ID a mango from back home in Puerto Rico that he wants to try and find to grow here. He knows it by Mango pasote. Any ideas as to another name for it that is goes by here?

I ate a good purple custard apple I picked up earlier this on a Homestead adventure. Planted them and pretty much got almost 100% growth.  They are about 4-5 inches each with a few leaves.  If anyone local wants to swing by and pick one up let me know. Just bring a empty pot to swap or larger pot and some dirt to transplant from my pot. Just keeping about 3-4 of them so have about another 10 I think to give away, will get actually count when I get home tonight. Not 100% exact variety. Purple skin, light purplish flesh close to skin whiter towards center. Will post pics of the fruit it came from if I can find it on phone.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My score yesterday, Mangosteen!
« on: June 14, 2015, 05:46:58 PM »
Finally got to try the "queen of fruits". After an exhaustive day romping the fruit and spice park, decided to go and try and score some.  I was not disappointed, and had my first one ever cut by Robert himself.  It was amazing, bout 2 lbs, and afraid one day later I am close to going back to get more.  Definitely my best taste adventure for 2015 and easily in my top 5 fruit of all time, just gotta try it next to some red jabos or sabaras, custard apples and rollinia to see how it fairs side by side.  I understand these are irradiated, not sure exactly how different the flavor is, but if fresh non-irradiated ones are better and someone can get them, just take my money now lol

Overall she seems to be doing well. Good fruit set for a young tree, keep cutting of fruitlets as I think she has too many as it is.  And she flowered strong again for the second time.  Just noticed over the past few weeks leaves yellowing and dying off. Not a crisis amount of leaves, but enough of them that I would like to nip it in the bud before it gets worse.  Iron deficiency?

I have tried twice before to get seeds of fruit from fruit spice park to grow with no luck.  This time success!!!! I planted several seeds of what I think was sartejena custard apple that I found quite delicious.  Now have several 2 sprouts and waiting for a few more.  So at what point do you put them in a pot. They are in a basic seed starter mini greenhouse (tupperware lol) in seed starter coco fiber mix pods and about an inch high.

PS if anyone local wants one, once I get a final count in another week or 2 the rest will be looking for good homes if anyone is interested send me pm and will send you my address when they are ready to go to their adoptive homes. I only want 2 to try and take to maturity. I believe it was a sartejena, not 100% but it was purple, if it ends up being one of the others like Lara and I think there is one more in this color would just be a bonus to me.

Been researching this, and found 2 opposing thoughts. One is just water frequently during drought etc.... the includes fertilizer and micros foliar sprays.  Who fertz and who does not when their sugar apples are fruiting??  Have you noticed any differences if you did not fert one year and fert the next?????

Wife is planning a brunch with friends this Thursday and decided to make a mango cheesecake. The mangoes we have will not be ready by tomorrow, anyone have any ripe mangoes they are willing to sell a few??  Just need like 2 large or 4 small mangoes. Variety not so important but fresh off the tree vs Publix crappy watery mangoes is what we are after. Already checked Mike, nothing ready.

During our morning walk/mango forage in our neighborhood. We came across an interesting backyard that pretty much amazed me.  The owner has 2 mango trees maybe 4ft tall MAX, has some sort of contraption that is keeping the branches pressed down. Looking at the main trunk, my best guess is the tree is somewhere between 3-4years old possibly.  Leaves are darkest green I have ever seen on a mango, and it is loaded with mangoes hanging less than a foot from the floor.  He has 4 pieces of rebar in a square around the tree and has cross braces that attach to these rebars and that presses the branches down.  Definitely the tree is much wider than tall. He also has an impressive row of pineapples, not sure what variety, but all in about 10 gallon pots and one of the pots had about 5 or 6 large pineapples.  Then he has a row of large dragon fruits on large rebar trellis.  2 of them loaded with flower/fruit.  Papayas and some type of annona.  No grass, just pebbles and fruit. And a much smaller backyard than mine. A person after my heart. Trying to meet him or her to chat but never see anyone there since finding this house a few weeks ago.  Want to get some pictures to post here but keep forgetting my phone, and rather get their permission first. I live in Hollywood Hills, so curious if to anyone here knows this person or is this person?????

Mother is coming down for the weekend so want to get her some fresh fruit as promised. Anything interesting for sale in the broward area?  Caimito, edwards or any other early mango, anonnas, or anything else????
