Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Tasting Mangos of 2015?
« on: July 28, 2015, 12:34:41 AM »
You know, it just had a good mango flavor. Smooth and juicy. Gotta have atleast one mango that taste, well like mango in the top 5 lol  Also hard to do the top 5 since so many of the early season mangoes are gone and hard to compare side by side.

1) Taralay
2) Coconut Cream
3)PPK
4)zill
5)Pickering or honey kiss

Thanks to Rob and the Zills, the wife and I have had an AMAZING mango summer.  My list is very loose as I loved something about every mangoe I ate and if I think about it too much my top 5 can easily change, did not eat one I would turn away.  Taralay had something about it that I could not get enough of.
List of what we did get to eat this year (atleast what I remember off the top of my head):

Taralay
Lemon zest
PPk
Coco cream
seacrest
providence
guava
val carrie
honey kiss
mallika
duncan
dupuis
pickering
sweet tart
fruit punch
baileys marvel

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Mangos for Sale
« on: July 19, 2015, 11:02:13 AM »
Was there 2 days ago. They had randoms of taralay, good amounts of honey kiss, zills, hatcher and some random stragglers like pickering, taralay, a few duncans and keitts yet to come.  I am sure the amounts have changed as I bought about 30 lbs worth lol and there were several people arriving as we left.  Sadly the season there is coming to an end. Hope to make one more trip to stock up on whatever is left this week or next (hoping it won't be too late)  Has been a great season of learning flavors and just eating plain delicious mangoes from there. Thank you Walter and Veran (and Rob)

So I may have 4 of the last OS sitting on my counter LOL hmmmmmmmmm

I ate a good purple custard apple I picked up earlier this on a Homestead adventure. Planted them and pretty much got almost 100% growth.  They are about 4-5 inches each with a few leaves.  If anyone local wants to swing by and pick one up let me know. Just bring a empty pot to swap or larger pot and some dirt to transplant from my pot. Just keeping about 3-4 of them so have about another 10 I think to give away, will get actually count when I get home tonight. Not 100% exact variety. Purple skin, light purplish flesh close to skin whiter towards center. Will post pics of the fruit it came from if I can find it on phone.

The fact that Verna had to, one drop and one pick, and offered to only sell me one because she wanted to "enjoy the other" was hint enough to me that this is probably a pretty good mango LOL.  Can't wait for it to be ready. I get to try probably at the same time Pineapple pleasure, orange sherbert, sweet tart and honey kiss all from Zills and should be able to try atleast one of each all in one day. CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!

Have been there several times this season thanks to Robs recommendation to check you all out.  Have sent several friends.  Great people, mangoes are beautiful and well handled. Flavors have been from good to amazing!!  Got the last guava (which I handed over to Rob lol) still waiting on a pineapple pleasure to ripen.  What looks to be ready for tomorrow or Wednesday?

They had these at Publix in South east Florida last year, devoured bag after bag. Had some a few weeks ago while on vacation in North Cali, saw them at a place called Berkley Bowl (in Berkley of course). Saw them, grabbed one, gave it to my cousin to try and asked him what does this taste like, his head snapped back LOL "Holy crap that tastes like cotton candy"   Showed em the bag, needless to say he bought several bags for family we had coming into to town to try LOL  I have been curious about the witch finger. But gumdrop??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Zill varieties.
« on: July 10, 2015, 08:18:28 PM »
I was there yesterday, and my list of zill varieties from Zill-vana grew.  As of yesterday, they had fruit punch trees still available, Verna almost convinced me I needed one LOL. I also asked her why Rob hates Carries as I held one in my hand, she laughed and said Walter does not like it either but I am more than welcome to try one lol. We did, did not buy any lol nuff said. While I do not know growth habits etc.... of the trees, I can tell you what the taste like..........................delicious, some just more delicious than others LOL  And now I am pissed I did not grab a few Baileys Marvels and Harvest Moons.

I actually made an unexpected trip yesterday to Zill-vana.  Got some good ones, pineapple pleasure, sweet tarts, orange sherbert,  according to Verna I got what she thinks is their last guava, all the Taralays they had out front and a few other goodies. $50 later, I am debating if I should bother going to the Mango Festival as it just does not have the same intrigue as before to me after this year.  Rather drive to Zills or Excalibur lol But the wife wants to go so got little say in the matter.

Interesting read, especially since I am now contemplating what varieites to plant.  Like you said, not the most flavorful, but this year I have found I rather enjoy a good pitaya chilled in the fridge. Find it refreshing.

Very cool. Still have to make it up there, hopefully soon before season is over.

How well will it fruit? And is there anywhere in Broward that sells some of these named varieties to try?

SO considering growing dragon fruit (got a good source for Natural Mystique  ;D)  Question, do you HAVE to let it grow so big?  Can it be pruned and kept a bit more controllable?  I am assuming like others, heavy pruning diminishes fruiting. Tried to find the answer on this thread, but 20 plus pages still have not found exact answer. Have learned a lot of other stuff though lol   Also can it be trained to grow vertically along a fence line?  I figure make a frame from the 4x4s along my wooden fence and let it grow like a T in 2 directions and long to distribute the weight along the fence by attaching treated 3x3 sideways to fence 4x4 if that makes sense.

Any particular reason they are not trying to commercially propagate the Taralay? Production issues? Disease issues? etc....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My score yesterday, Mangosteen!
« on: June 15, 2015, 11:32:48 AM »
Tried some passion fruit too for the first time. Flavor was Hawaiian punchish, but did not like the texture. Had some great dragon fruit and soursop while there too. Funny thing is the soursop was same price as the mangosteen. And they are claiming soursop as   "best fruit in the world".  I like soursop, but definitely not best fruit in the world in my book. But if someone want to give me some fiberless soursop might change my mind lol  ;D

At $9.99 a pound don't think I will be giving any away LOL  I thought the price was a bit high, but I guess when no one else has it (atleast that I could find)  demand exceeds my supply. Now just trying to get down there in the next few days to get another pound or 2.  Gunnar, road trip? lol
