Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jaboticabaholics Anonymous
« on: February 11, 2015, 01:05:48 AM »
Cutting down that big tree and taking out the roots is gonna cost  a pretty penny lol.  I really don't have any low flooding areas on my property as my house is somewhat on a hill.  Will they grow well in containers? I guess I am going to have to move around some of my trees after this fruiting season. Maybe 2 sugar apples I have that are in prime sun real estate. Although I do have an area under a large coconut tree that gets good sun, but just scared of one of those palm fronds crushing anything I plant under it LOL

I will be checking out Benders this week for avocado, great news that he usually has. Hope I get lucky.  Another question, I have read here they seem to like water, but how bout sun? Does it have to have 100% sun or will it do ok half day sun? Morning sun vs afternoon sun? I get about 4-6 hours in the front yard depending on time of year from sunrise to about 11am. Backyard gets direct sun about 12 till sundown. I will probably end up cutting down a black olive tree in front of my house (not sure I  have the heart to do it as it is older than me) and that would open a lot more room for trees.

There was a super cool gentleman we spoke to for a bit that gave us some fruit he picked of the trees, he worked there, hard to miss cuz as I told my wife he had a very cool white mustache and soul patch going on reminiscent of Wyatt Earp days lol  He tried to find us a Rollinia to eat, which he did, but it was small and not ready as it should have been, but still tasted pretty decent. There were about 4 big fruits he said should be ready in next week or 2.  All the Jabo trees we found were loaded!!!  And definetly going back there for mango season LOL

Had my first Rollinia after reading a post by ASaffron and seeing his video on youtube about Rollinia. And coincidentally bumped into Jabos there too by coincidence, in the back of my mind I kept saying "I know I have seen people speak of these on the Fruit forum" After I tasted the first one I KNEW why. Delicious!!!!! And I am afraid I have tasted the drug, and was on my way to Pine Island near by, but showed a little restrain lol They had regular ones and red ones for sale, said the red ones should fruit in 1-2 years. Figured do so more research before deciding. And seeing now how many possible varieties, should have asked which they had. Once the guy their told me how long they took to fruit my heart sank. BUT now seeing about these reds, my heart is a little happy again!!!!! Must find an older fruit in the next year or 2 Jabo!!!! Who do I gotta talk too!!!??? LOL

Went today for the first time (amazed I never been before as I grew up in Kendall area), well worth the hour drive. I know someone was asking if it was worth going in the winter.......well we ate till our bellies were full. Got to try several fruits I have never had, and some I never even heard of. But the best part after discussing Rollinia on here, I walk in and what do they have sitting on the counter. My eyes fixed on this alien like fruit, from forum posts and pics I thought to myself "this can't be!!!" I asked the lady Rollinia? She said absolutely, "most people don't know what it is" she said. Next words that came out of her mouth were like the horns at heavens gate "would you like to try some". Her and I hit it off, wife was laughing, by the time our conversation was over I had eaten about HALF!!! SOOOO DELICIOUS!!! Like nothing I have tasted before. Texture like soursop, but taste much better.  Our walk through the property was rewarded with many fruits on the ground.  Got to taste Jaboticabas by the handfuls, trees are loaded and on my list of to plant (wife loved em). BUT to wait soooooooo long for them to fruit, gonna have to find some a bit on the older side for sale hopefully.  Canistel egg fruit was pretty good, wife liked it more than I did. Gooseberries, best way to described them is natures sour patch kids. Star fruit was all you can eat pretty much lol. Could not find one Mulberry on the ground or low enough in the tree to watch it fall, dying to try the himalayan.  Ate several different varieties of bananas, 2 were so delicious, but could not 100% verify tree name and no one around to ID for us. Found on whole banana stem on ground loaded with yellow, sweet, delicious treasure. Wife was laughing cuz I just sat down like an ape and ate away LOL they were quite small, about 3-4 inches long. Tasted like banana pudding, a little sweeter than normal banana. Rollinia fruit taunting me everywhere. Some huge ones in beautiful green and yellow colors weighing their branches down. Will post some pictures in a bit.

Where is the best place to get a good selection and fair price for banana trees? Not looking for anything in particular, open to suggestions as far as varieties go.

Wow another fruit I have never heard of!! That seems to grow here!!! How does it do in South Florida (broward county)  I saw flyingfox fruit video and saw the 4 year old tree not so big, but with decent fruit on it. Where does one get one of these, after hearing the review on youtube that it tastes like pineapple custard, sign me up!!!!!!!!!

Since some were discussing the state of their mango trees flowering late, early, or not at all, figured take some pics of my babies!!
My lemon meringue, field of fruitletts

Cocounut Cream still waiting for flowers to open fully

Cogshall (with the army of ants I mentioned on another thread)

And my Carrie that has been very quiet until the last few days these little bud swellings starting to do something

Hoping the lemon meringue sets good, estimate atleast 200 fruitletts on it now. The storm today  pretty much blew off all the dead flowers leaving only fruitletts.

609
Will take a closer look tonight and look at images to see what in tarnations scales and aphids look like lol  Did not see anything that resembled anything. I do have a few sri lanka weavles I keep pulling off my lemon meringue.

610
If the ants themselfves are no danger to my tree or fruit, I don't mind them. Will let natuer do its thing.  Did not see anything thing else (pests) concerning. Interesting on the soda.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ants all over my PlANTS!! Mango to be specific
« on: February 04, 2015, 12:09:58 AM »
I was checking on my mangoes this evening (my ritual when I get home from work ) and noticed my Cogshall has red ants ALL over the pannicles and flowers. Is this harmful? Should I eradicate them?  I think they have made a home at the base of my tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Stubborn Mango Trees this season?
« on: February 03, 2015, 03:33:28 PM »
My lemon meringue is full of fruitlets, many that seem to be growing and are about size of a pea right now.  Cocunut cream flowered but no fruitletts yet, cogshall same. Carrie still nothing, but it is very young tree only 2 years old. Has some swelling buds but has not released the fury yet!!

My mother in law has a mango and avocado tree from seed. The mango tree produces delicious mangoes, not sure what variety, but probably Haden. The avocado also has produced great avocados. Will get some pics next time I am there. She is of the old school of stick the seed in the ground and see what it does LOL But has done well. Tried to explain to her about grafted trees and got a why would you do that when you can stick a seed in the ground look.

615
Cool thanks for sharing since could not make it out.

I have seen  people in the alley behind our house, jump my neighbor fence across the alley to take mangos. Now that I have my own trees, been contemplating bobwire LOL  I have a neighbor with a very green thumb, who has tons of mangos, longan and jackfruit trees on a very small property and all produce well. He has razor wire running by the top of his fence lol

617
How was it? We almost went but got caught up in the yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugar Apple pest?
« on: January 25, 2015, 05:17:58 PM »
So working the yard (new hobby, wife is very confused LOL. Was not into "yardwork" until I came across this site and saw what is possible)  Cleared a few feet more around the mangoes and mulched and recommended by Bullie.  Checking on my sugar apples, and saw this on one of them. Small white things. Did a search for "white stuff on sugar apple tree" lol  and looks to me anyways like mealy bugs? So how do I kill them, are they a danger to my tree, and are they more importantly a danger to my Mangoes. I will rip the sugar apple out in a heart beat if it is.

Zands, it might help that you have a POLICE car parked feet from your mangoes LOL

thanks for the replies. Keeping a close eye and watering tomorrow. Was hoping for rain today to let nature do her thing, but no luck.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Honey Bees liking mango blossoms
« on: January 24, 2015, 09:51:31 PM »
My lemon meringue seems to be the only attracting the bees like I said before. There has been a stronger fragrance close in the air to it that we have noticed, and have noticed increased bees the last 2 days. It does however have a lot more flowers than my other three mango trees right now.

622
Thanks. Peace of mind LOL Yeah this one is in its second fruiting season with me, last year I clipped all flowering/fruit spikes to let it focus on growing.  thanks again everyone for your insight.

623
Thanks, no I have not fertilized thanks to all the reading I did on here.  How often should I water trees that were planted last week? twice a week for next month and then once a week? I water with a wand and hose at the base. Also read not to water the leaves lol (lots of reading lately)

624
There are tons of bb's lol So the browning is just part of the fruiting process? Soil is pretty bone dry since last watering Weds about 2-3 inches down. Gonna mulch it next time I water. How often should I be watering, Once a week then? I have been playing with the rains too and skipping waterings if it rains. People think I am mad at work cuz if it is cloudy there I check the radar to see if water is going to hit my house LOL  Have not fertilized. SOOOOOOOOOOO new to this and hoping not to hamper my babies lol  I have never seen mango flowers up close and definetly have not checked on them every day during the flowering/fruiting season LMAO  All the trees around here are huge so only see the flowers from a distance. Thanks for your help Bullie

It is literally like brown shriveled when a plant dries out from not enough water, but only the little leaves of the flowers.  Watering weds and sundays. Too much? Tree has been in ground since last July.
