First round of airlayers for this summer. These are the largest ones I've done straight into 7gal pots.  Will eventually take pre-orders for the following varieties:
Smith
Hollier
Champagne
LSU Purple
O'Rourke

We have begun installing tree trimmer mulch on our future orchard.  Everything is being spread between 1-1.5' thick.  Approximately 6500 cy of mulch is needed to cover the entire area and we currently have installed about 1600 cy.  There is a good variation as to the type and consistency of the green waste.  The existing soil is classified as Holopaw fine sand which to the eye appears void of any organic nutrients or topsoil.  There was little stratification when the excavator dug down 6'.  I figured mulch will enhance the soil with some organic material that will retain moisture, suppress weeds, add nutrients, and increase bio activity.  Mangoes will be the primary crop and production trees will be installed this summer.  I figured creating a thin layer of topsoil in the next few years will only help newly planted trees become established quicker.  I do not plan to continue mulching after the entire area has been covered.  Soil samples are going to spectrum analytics next week.

Does anyone have experience with this tactic on a larger scale?  What are the drawbacks?  Thanks.

I know this topic has been pretty well covered however I'm getting closer to establishing the final layout for our future orchard and wanted to get some last minute feedback from experienced home/commercial growers.

Mango tree varieties and their growth habits will vary greatly throughout the orchard.
Rows will be planted North to South 8 trees per row with 19' spacing between each tree.  The rows will be spaced 25' apart.

Are 19' diameter trees realistic for most mangoes?  Of course they will be selectively pruned annually to keep things healthy and productive.  On this parcel, if I go up to 20' x 25' spacing I'll loose 36 spaces which is significant. 

Would love to hear from some experienced growers on whether 19' be sufficient or should I sacrifice greater spacing for less trees?

Recently I realized that my two jackfruits purchased from Excalibur (Lemon and Excal Red) were getting "wet feet" in 15gal plastic containers.  The planting mix I was using  was too heavy and anaerobic.

Subsequently, I re-potted into 15gal fabric pots with a perlite/planting mix which is significantly better.  Unfortunately the trees don't seem to be rebounding as quickly as I was hoping and are actually showing signs of deficiency (I think).  Could the tree be locked up from sitting in a wet soil?  Some leaves have fallen and the fresh nodes do not seem to be pushing.  A couple weeks ago, against my better judgment, I gave them some fert in hopes to spark some new growth but it had no affect. 

Been putting in a lot of work getting the nursery cleaned up and repotting.  100 new gro pro 15gal fabric pots.  So impressed with how these containers perform over conventional plastic.

My neighbor has a mature tree and gave me a couple fruit to try.  She said it was given to her from an uncle who used to be a commercial grower on the East Coast.  Apparently it was his favorite variety and coined it "Pineapple".  The mangoes are currently ripening on the table and I look forward to trying them and possibly grafting a tree.  This tree had more flowers and small fruit on it than almost any other tree I saw this season.  Unfortunately hundreds of small fruits ended up falling prematurely. She has been harvesting fruits for over a month now.

What variety does this look like? The tree appeared to be smaller and productive.  Looks like clean fruit too.  Thanks.

Is there a specific variety called macapuno or is that term used for different varieties with the same coco fruit "condition"?  After reading some posts I'm  very curious where to source some premium varieties for S Florida growing.  Thanks.
