Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Must-have Loquats
« on: April 12, 2015, 05:28:24 PM »
so far everyone I feed the Avri to is impressed...it's the sweetest variety I've found.

check out this one...it was the largest on the tree (several others came close).

Now I realize it's a large fruited variety (especially if you thin them, I didn't thin my fruits).

Looks great! Where did you get the Avri from?

Can anyone help me with these questions:
1. Which bags should I use to protect guavas, loquats, etc from fruit flyes/maggots?
2. Where can I BUY these?
3. When/How to apply the bags in SoFLa?
Thanks!

Can anyone positively identify this fruit (photo)? I believe it's a "nance" (Byrsonima crassifolia), but i've never seen the nance fruit directly, so I'm not positive. I found this 30ft tree loaded with fruit by the roadside in Miami.  Taste is quite sweet with a bit of latex, musky and tanins (?). Any thoughts?

Thanks to all for your comments, you've provided a thorough perspective on this issue. Conclusion: I'll have to forget about this (at least for now). It's a real disappointment because there are so many hundreds of exotic fruits which are readily available in nurseries in Brazil that it would be great if we could make available here. Hopefully overtime this will get easier. Thanks again. F.

I'm probably going to Brazil Sao Paulo soon and wanted to bring some hard-to find fruit plants to Miami which are not available here. Does anyone have experience with this? 1. Are there any internal Brazilian regulations that need to be followed? 2. Does anyone have good recommendations of nurseries around Sao Paolo? 3. Does anyone have good recommendations about which plants to brings (which are not available in Florida)? Thanks!!!
