Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Germination Campomanesia phaea
« on: August 01, 2016, 08:17:35 AM »
Thanks Alexandre, that's very helpful. I germinated my seeds in the shade because I've already killed another CPhaea due to too much sun I think. Seedlings seem extremely slow growing. Do you keep your CPhaea in the sun or part-shade? How many years to fruiting?

Oscar: how would you say MLalejiwoo compares to Kasturi, Khuini and Indica in terms of anthracnose, taste, size and cold-tolerance?
I don't know. I don't have Lalee jewo growing. I've heard it's also anthrocnose resistant. Don't know about it's cold tolerance.

I'm surprised you don't have Lalejiwoo; I am convinced you must have one of the largest collections in the world!

I have a small lalejiwoo the plant looks very similar to Mindica and I've heard is very good, but mine hasn't fruited yet.

Sometimes you get lucky with the right conditions for a seed. I first germinated in plastic bag with peat moss and vermiculite with a few small holes for air circulation and constant heat mat of 85F. Then as soon as first root and top growth emerged I planted on a deep 4x4x10 pot with potting soil covering about 80% of the seed. Garcinias tend to have long taproots so it's good to give them room to grown deep. In some GHombronianas that I have transplanted at 4 inch tall the tap root is 2-3 times the size of the upper growth.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My Cambuca (Plinia edulis) tree!
« on: June 11, 2016, 07:50:51 AM »
Great going!
FYI Frankies cambuca start came form Antonio Morschbacker in Brazil. He is the one that wrote a paper on cambucas together with Marco Lacerda. Antonio told me when i met him in Brazil that he had picked out an especially large and good fruiting tree to send to Frankies.
First cambuca tree i planted took about 12 years to fruit. Second tree i planted, right next to first tree only took 8 years to fruit. The difference was first tree only got partial sun. Second tree got full sun.
Oscar: I got some cambuca seeds from you last year and now small plant; is it fair to assume the original tree for your cambuca was Frankie's? I also have cambuca from Frankie's so I wanted to record the differences. Thanks. F.

well guys... its been 3 months and i was just about to give up hope and i noticed today that 2 of my seeds have FINALLY sprouted!  hallelujah!   any of the rest of you out there had yours sprout yet?
I've had great germination on the seeds I got; planted in March and they're about 4 inches tall now. Seems easy to grown.

Has anyone in Florida gotten fruit from any species of Baccaurea???

60
Richard: I just received the seeds; they're in great shape and so fresh some are germinating! Thanks. Federico.

Yes, I've also killed a couple of Rollinias but I'm not giving up with this current batch of 1-year olds. In my opinion they really need partial shade when small and plenty of water, specially when hot, but also good draining.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Costa Rica farm for sale . . .

Who on this forum wouldn't love to own that farm in CR? Definitively very tempting! As far as increasing the tropical fruit tree collection: How easy/difficult would it be to bring in plants from other countries into CR?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Garcinia hombroniana

Yes, I have tasted it and I would recommend it. In my opinion a 6 out of 10 on the flavor scale. Just a tad sweet, mostly sour but in a nice way (not astringent and not disagreeable sour like Xanthochimus). Refreshing/fresh but not super-juicy. Nice subtle flavor which  grows on you as you eat more fruits.  Fruit is pretty red color. Not big but seeds are not big either; pulp ratio is decent (50%? considering the thick inedible rind).  I would recommend growing this tree if you are a garcinia collector. It's dioecious and tree can get mid/big, so only consider if you have space. I may have some for sale/trade in July after I transplant.

I do think it's good to grow. The fruit is good flavored, not as sweet or tasty as lychee, but larger like golf balls and juicy. Pretty tree. Grows fast into a big tree. It's definitively a tropical tree, but I think it may take some cold: mid 40's and maybe mid 30's for a few hours in my experience, but not much more than that. I have no idea if it will grow in California.

Just some pictures of fruit and tree of camu camu, very productive trees, the weight of the fruit broke the branches of trees.

Congratulations they look great!

How long did it take to fruit from seed?
Would you plant in full sun?

That's fantastic; congratulations! I agree that maprang likes hot/humid, but is maprang is susceptible to anthracnose?

Here's a cluster of large Big Jims.

Simon

Those look great. What is that Styrofoam netting shown in the picture? Does is protect the fruit? how about protection from fruit flies?

I have no experience with capulin.  For what it is worth, it is in Florida's Best Fruiting Plants by Charles Boning and he recommends it in the bottom half of Florida.

That means it was at Excalibur.
If I remember correctly I asked Rob at Excalibur and he said capulin was not good and he didn't have any. Does anyone have a source for capulin in FL or CA? thanks. F.

I received mine too! thanks again Raul! all are already grafted now wait and see...

What did you graft them on to?

I used a couple of 24" achachairus and mex. Garcinias that I had. I used cleft (wedge) grafting, but I didn't do in on the leader on the mex. Garcinia because I didn't want to risk loosing the main plant if the graft doesn't work. I wrapped the scions and graft in paraffin tape. I hope that helps and good luck.

I would love a couple; please send me payment details and thanks!

I got my plants today; they seem to be in great shape! thanks.

I also have to chime in and say that I've gotten seeds from Alexandre Neles and the seeds have been great with prompt delivery and germination. Thanks for that.

In my experience the most important factor in germination that can't be controlled by the buyer is how fresh the seeds are. Alexandre seeds are fresh (very recently harvested) and this is key. I hope Alexandre keeps with this policy and I hope other seed sellers do the same an only offer/ship very fresh seeds and discard older seeds sooner.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tree ID please? Maybe MoraceaE/Ficus?
« on: April 16, 2016, 08:15:14 AM »
Thanks! it really hurts my OCD to have an unidentified plant; I don't know how that happened...

Has anyone tasted the seeds/fruit?
How many years to fruit?
Would this plant be considered and ultra-tropical?
I couldn't find info on dioeciousness so I'm assuming it's monoecious?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tree ID please? Maybe MoraceaE/Ficus?
« on: April 15, 2016, 02:07:33 PM »
I have a seedling of this tree, but I don't know what this tree is called. Any expert out there can help?
Fruits about 2 inches long. Flowers maybe 12 inches total. Tree height 8ft.
