Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mulgoba Mango
« on: June 20, 2012, 03:59:23 PM »
I had one Saturday at F&S park and it was awesome.  It was the best mango that I have tasted since tasting an Edwards.  I wish I had space for another mango tree.  I would like to topwork that one in.

903
I went down with my family.  I made a few purchases, a J-30 seedling jackfruit, an unknown jackfruit, lorito mamey, and some hindi bessenera mangos.  I also got to try for the first time a white sapote(smathers) and a cinnamon apple, found them on the ground.  Both were great.  We then roamed into the mango area.  My top finds on the ground there were a mulgoba and a bullocks heart.  The mulgoba was incredible.   Afterwards, I stopped by my fathers house and helped him pick around 80 pounds of nam doc mai mangos and 10 pounds of carries.

If any of you are going tomorrow morning, bring some mosquito repellent.

U of F describes navel as "Shy Bearers, susceptible to Postbloom Fruit Drop (PFD)"  It may take a year or two more.  http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/hs132

Definitely remove them.  This year I am tipping as I havest as recommended by many.  I left them prevoius years and they can stay on the tree for over a year.

Watch the vieos at the bottom of the fairchild gardens mango page.

I was trying to stake up a leaning pineapple for a few more days of on-the-plant ripening. It still had some green and did not smell.  I pushed a stake in the ground and tilted it back up and found a mess down below.  Mealybugs and fire ants had eaten out a section.  After I was done fuming, thinking it was never going to ripen without rotting, I took it inside and cut off the bottom. I was greeted by a wonderful aroma so I cut up the rest.  Even though it still felt hard and did not smell from the outside, I have only had one pineapple better that I grew myself around three years ago.

That brings me to the question.  I have around a dozen other pineapples in various stages of growth.  I was not able to look because it got dark but I am sure others probably have the same infestation, hopefully at an earlier stage.   What remedies are you guys using for this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: More Rambutan
« on: June 07, 2012, 08:45:59 AM »
I was eating these last night along side sweetheart lychees my wife bought locally from Lychees Online.  I thought they went well together.  Yes, the lychees were better but the rambutans are very good too.  I will be going back to Western Beef on Pines today to see if they have more rambutans.

I was at the Pines store after 8 PM and there were two boys making pyramids with them.  I bought 5 pounds.  It was worth the trip.

Beware the voices...  Actually, the stuff you bought looks great.

My mom gave me a piece of dragon fruit with similar flowers.  She told me it was Zamorano.

I am trapped in Downtown Miami until 7 PM.  I was working 10 minutes from there yesterday.  I was planning on going there again on the way home.  Hopefully they were hiding another pallete in the back.

Just came from the Wetsern Beef store at Pines and University, in Pembroke Pines.  There are rambutans now.....or, maybe were.  I met SleepDoc there and between an Asian woman, a Jamaican woman, he and I, there was a rapidly dwindling supply.

For Broward folks, I called the Western Beef on Pines Blvd and University and they said they will have rambutan tomorrow.

Less than 1/2 acre with 30+ fruit trees in the ground, 100+ fruiting plants in total including pineapples, blueberries and potted stuff, 30+ queen palms taking up valuable fruit tree space.  Looking for a 2 acre property...

I have been using Fer-A-Gro, which is Magnesium 2.64%, Sulfer 2.9, Boron 0.01, Chelated Iron 1.59, Chelated Manganese 1.53, Molybdenum .001, and Chelated Zinc 0.94.

Here is the history of what I have done with the pictured trees:

I sprayed Fer-A-Gro on 2/16, 4/23, and last night.  On 3/3 and 5/5, I applied 3 pounds of 8-3-9-3 to that tree with a 5" truck diameter.  On 4/14, I did a Seq 138 chelated iron drench, 8 tablespoons.  On 5/31, I got a PH tester and got a reading a hair below 6 so I applied 4 cups of dolomite, trying to get it to 6.5.

Anyone see something wrong with dosages or frequency or anything I am missing?

Here is my Kent.  My uneducated guess is potasium deficiency.  Can someone please confirm?  Also note all the chunks missing from the new growth from root weevils.

Here is my blotchy Dot.  PPK is similar.

Brandon, I bet spraying your trees with something like "Citrus Nutritional Spray" by Southern Ag http://www.centralgarden.com/brands/southern-ag/southern-ag-insecticides-citrus-nutritional-spray-12ea-1pt.html
I'm sure there are many different ones out there that will work as well. Just remember to spray it after sunset so the leaves have a chance to completely dry so you don't sunburn the leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Roasting jackfruit seeds?
« on: June 02, 2012, 10:58:33 PM »
In my first attempt, I roasted them on the grill at around 400 degrees for 15 minutes.  Four or five detonated, quite loudly, but the result was soft with a potato like taste.  My wife like them but I was not a fan. I seasoned them with salt and pepper to increase the appeal.   In my second attempt, I roasted at 250 degrees for 40 minutes.  These were too hard. Seasoning did not even stick to these.  Looking forward to the next attempt.

My only producer is a kumquat, meiwa i think.  I have a five year old honeybell tangelo that gives me a few fruit too.  However, birds scar the fruits so I have to pick them early before they start to rot. Citrus is a big disappointment for me.  I planted a pomelo last year in hopes the leaf miners would not affect it as badly as the others. It is just as bad.  I am not willing to use systemic pesticides.  Key lime and meyers lemon do ok but you are not looking for tart.  I will probably rip them out for things that cannot be purchased at the supermarket.

Wow, it is amazing how the lateral branches of the jackfruit can support fruit of that size!  My mouth is watering.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Weevils feasting on my Lychee tree
« on: June 02, 2012, 09:47:31 PM »
I have lot of weevils in my yard.   All my trees have been marked by them.  I squish them whem I see them.  I take extreme pleasure when they are stacked up and I get a two for one deal. Not sure if it reduces the occurance but at least I get a little vengeance.  Others, who lives a mile away, did not have evidence of them.

I have seen this tree in person and it is truly inspiring.  I have no more space to plant mango trees so this increases my variety potential greatly.  I am looking forward to tasting some new varieties so I can start planning some of my own creations

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Storm Damage Repair to Guava
« on: June 01, 2012, 09:31:08 AM »
My wife tells me we had a wild one last night but I slept through it all, as usual.  When I took my morning walk around the property, I found my Guava tree split on a major Y, about 40/60 to either side, 8 inches long.  I thought if I cut the 40% side, the other would probably not do well because of the length of the open wound I would leave exposed.  I decided to try a repair.  Sorry I did not think to take a before picture but here is the result.  I rapped it with parafilm and then tie tape.

Trimmings to reduce weight from both sides.

I executed a similar repair with tie tape to a sugar apple tree, saving both limbs. Do you all think this will heal or should I just cut the entire limb back?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragon Fruit Problem
« on: May 30, 2012, 09:24:15 AM »
I have seen this on my dragon fruits.   I am not sure what causes this.  Sometimes, nothing comes of it.  However, I have noticed that this can symptom sometimes precludes decomposition of the fleshy areas.  If it gets worse or starts to get orange or brown, I would use a fungicide.

My tree that I planted 2 years ago aborted the two fruit it set.  Guess I will be waiting another year.

My Mai I tree is doing the same at a smaller scale.  I have a few on my 2 year old Golden Nugget too.

Harry,

I believe sleepdoc said it was a Mai I seedling from your tree.  It was delicious.  Low latex.  I bought a Mai I grafted at the brfvc sales without ever tasting one so I was really grateful to get a glimpse of what is to come. Thanks!

My mango trees are PPK, florigon, keitt, kent, ndm, dot (I think this was mislabelled), and Glenn.
